There's a massive bait-and-switch at the center of facial recognition technology.
Join the Open Sourced Reporting Network: www.vox.com/ope...
Human faces evolved to be highly distinctive; it’s helpful to be able to recognize individual members of one’s social group and quickly identify strangers, and that hasn’t changed for hundreds of thousands of years. Then in just the past five years, the meaning of the human face has quietly but seismically shifted. That’s because researchers at Facebook, Google, and other institutions have nearly perfected techniques for automated facial recognition.
The result of that research is that your face isn’t just a unique part of your body anymore, it’s biometric data that can be copied an infinite number of times and stored forever. In this video, we explain how facial recognition technology works, where it came from, and what’s at stake.
Open Sourced is a year-long reporting project from Recode by Vox that goes deep into the closed ecosystems of data, privacy, algorithms, and artificial intelligence. Learn more at www.vox.com/ope...

@@sword_of_damocle5 Well said. We've got a societal structure now where government can watch you pretty much everywhere, but where they lack, the public makes up for it by essentially watching each other and playing the role of "cop". Sort of like a 24/7 snitch service. People with cell phones, dash cams, etc... can record everything that goes on. So it's a case of having the prison guards and the inmates watching the inmates.

I do not agree with the statement at 8:20 I certainly do wish I could be equally honest with everyone in each social realm. I'm not sure the fact that most people act completely different around family, coworkers and loved ones means it's good.

its not necessarily about honesty. its more about behaviour expectations. Would you want to have to act the same way you do with your spouse as you do with your boss?

I always knew Yandex was better, I’m Russian, and they’ve literally become such a conglomerate in Russia which provides you with everything. They’re a search engine, an Uber, an UberEats, a Netflix type of thing, and so much more. Also, never mess with Russian IT guys. They have the value Swiss Guards used to have back in the 1300’s.

@Paul Boobier There's a civil war in the democratic party between the elite establishment crowd (Bill, Hillary, Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Tom Perez, socially left & economic right billionaires, CNN and other mainstream media, etc.), and the progressive wing (Bernie Sanders, Warren, AOC, and most of the democratic voting base, especially among younger people who want bigger, more drastic change than what the establishment elite want). Most dems (the progressive base) will openly criticize the establishment wing of the party.

@@noname-zp1yh No, it's pretty sane advice. If you don't want to get stalked, don't give the stalker a complete set of present-wrapped and hand-labelled tools to do it.

Spirit I politely disagree. Also “if u dont want to get food poisoning, dont eat” has the same energy imo lol. The internet isnt just a public space as well, it can be at least partially private. It is accesable to the public, just like any other public space, for instance a hospital or a library, the only real difference is its digital. We choose the amount of things we share with certain people and social circles both in real life and internet. Taking that away will have consequences. But i am running off arent I, we know China isnt that bad.

in a simulated/blended reality the demand for the designer classics of time faces will fetch everyone's fancy, and then after in world tendencies play out through repeated stressors, the really bold will create the hybrid, and hybrid of hybrids, and intentionally obscure. All facets indicating that the path used by most has been done and something fresh is required for the fresh mindset they seek to curate/let live out.

Thanks to the Vox team for all your hard work to educate people all over the world. I use your videos for the courses I teach on digital literacies. I'd be very interested in more videos about the design and sociotechnical structures of different platforms, their algorithmic processes, and how these shape different cultures-of-use, identities, online interactions and modes of exclusion.
