Shanks are also radio units and help coordinate attacks. There’s a lore tab about eido teaching young eliksni about a fable, about a shank that was worked on by someone who was very angry, and the shank malfunctioned a lot because of it

they are a crit spot and unless your playing on higher difficulties, they are pretty hard to not kill. (getting a glory kill on theses things is pretty funny)

There's also a Shank that was left in D1, that used a Fallen Tracer rifle(the rifle that shoots bolts that track you). It was only used in House of Wolves iirc

I found it interesting when I saw that switched off Shank in the Botza District during Season of the Splicer, and Eido expressed a fondness for it due to ‘her’ longs service to the House of Light, whilst mentioning ‘her’ frequent maintenance and the importance of scrap work in Eliksni culture. Since then, I was never sure if Shanks are mindless drones or if they had a sort of animalistic AI. Do Eliksni regard them as tools or maybe even pets?

Something I’ve just thought of. So I’m Splicer you could explore the Eliksni quarters and Eido would have dialogue and described how fallen see shanks as part of the family and cared for them dearly. So…I’m embarrassed to say that I thought shanks were called sharks for about a month in D1. I had a pretty small TV and used the standard AV cables as i didn’t have an HDMI cable. They have little fins, they float around, sharks, in my mind, fit with the whole pirate theme the Fallen had going for them. It was only when I was playing with my friend and we were getting swarmed that I said “Dude, there is a pack of sharks out for our blood” that I was told they were shanks. :(
