Fish are ntelligent; iI used to fish in my parents small pond and you could see the fish in the clear water; if you catch a fish on a particular bait it will ignore that food next time. I have even witnessed fish that have been caught on a certain bait push other fish away from a baited hook on 2 occasions. Once you have caught them on different baits they even become fearful of seeing line in the water and are reluctant to feed at all. The 3 second memory is a lie.

Many plants have evolved with the intention of being eaten for better reproduction. The flesh around the seeds of fruit and vegetables are there so birds and mammals will ingest them. Move long distances and spread their seeds via their stool. The plants feels pain thing is strange considering plants have no nervous system, even plants that don’t produce fruits or vegetables still benefit from having their leaves eaten by animals. Same as pruning the lower branches of your trees.

People tend to deny this type of information, because the implications are many: 1- if fishes feel pain and they don't want to contribute to their suffering, they'll need to stop eating fish, and they're too attached to the pleasure their taste buds can give to them. So they'll live with cognitive dissonance, and that causes discomfort. 2- if they believe in a God, they'll have to put all suffering of billions of fishes in the account of God, and that doesn't seem something a good God would do. And people don't want to stop believing in God, otherwise they would be desolate about what's life, since they rely highly on religion. 3- it shows how similar we are to creatures we usually dismiss as very different, which shows humans aren't so special as we think we are. 4- it shows how humans lack empathy, and this puts us as bad creatures. Who wants to be bad? Unfortunately truth is too much for some people, I just wish we could respect all living beings instead of giving excuses, such as "we need to eat", "it's natural" etc. We clearly don't need to eat animals. There's nothing natural in the way we breed animals and catch them in nature. It's a system that makes defenseless beings suffer in name of money. If it was a survival scenario, there would be no need to throw a net and catch millions of fishes, but simply catching one to satisfy hunger. Some people don't understand the suffering of others until it happens to them...

A Japanese technique of killing actually solves the pain problem: a long needle impales the brain and goes through the spinal cord. No suffering, and even better, no thrashing or suffocation to cause damage to the meat or make it bitter and partly decomposing with ketones. The only reason major fisheries won't do it is cost. You would need a skilled human hand to do the deed.

Well I think it’s the fact that we can’t hear fish screaming in the first place since they don’t have vocal cords. So unlike the animals that do have vocal cords, the sense of screaming disturbs us more than the sight of it. People most likely relate it in a sense of, “If it doesn’t quack like a duck, then it probably isn’t a duck,” to compare it to, “If it doesn’t scream, then it probably isn’t in pain.”

It's sad to see all the comments about "killing fish without pain" or "as humane as possible" and almost none about the fact that we don't have to kill them in the first place. If people were more willing to learn about the alternatives instead of sticking to the "traditions" and the "normal" diet, then the big corporations might be more inclined towards a change. Sadly, the demand for animal products in general is high and the methods of welfare inspections are so ineffective in some cases they don't really serve any purpose but to make sure that the companies can continue making as much profit as possible.

Interesting but there is a whole lot to unpack under this topic such as the the study they mentioned in this video. One or two studies is not enough it’s important to have significant peer reviewed studies and research to prove this. A study could be done but to have a good non bias one is another story. In addition, some research have shown that the skin around the fishes mouth have very little nerves which means very little or no pain. Fish eat certain crustaceans and other fish with spines, claws, etc… they wouldn’t be eating that if was painful. Just something to think about.

I relocated to be near the sea when I retired so I could take up my old hobby of sea fishing. I used to think fish were not sentient and any response to painful stimuli was just reflex action. I now realise I was wrong and stopped fishing a few months ago. I thought of giving away my rods etc. to some kids so they could try out sea fishing. My conscience won’t allow me to as they would just be causing the suffering instead of me. I grew up in the countryside where killing rabbits, fish, birds and foxes was seen as fun. @@Sochilinda new research has shown that plants communicate, make choices, compete with plants that are not related to then while sharing resources with plants that are (even when unrelated plants are the same species) and even selectively feed their saplings while ignoring others. I'm not making the argument that we shouldn't eat plants, but I think the research is fascinating. Also, just because an animal has basic survival instincts, that doesn't mean it's sentient. Many fish eat their own young when they are hungry. They have adapted to live in schools because it increases survival, but do they feel distress when a member is taken? That would be an interesting study, but I would guess not. They don't form bonds and they have no capacity for higher thinking. They are not sentient. Fishing should be done in a cruelty free and sustainable way. I'm, personally, more concerned about how overfishing can hurt truly sentient beings like whales. But I respect your decision to not participate in the harm of any animals.

sigh I can't say much for commercial fisheries, but true fishermen reconcile with this every time we go out. Every fish that we harvest for food we try to find the best way to dispatch it humanely and give it thanks for the sustenance it provides us. Even if it is not a land animal and they reproduce in seemingly high quantities, they must have some way of feeling fear. I know im an idealist and I've had opportunities most people don't normally have but... If you want to eat meat; then at least once I think its important to have the experience of dispatching and processing an animal yourself.

Well said. Fishing for me started off being all about catching fish but eventually became more about connecting with nature and making great memories. I struggled with my conscience because I wasnt even fishing for food. A few other anglers also have this struggle but many more seem not to. Now, over 40 years later I think i have finally managed to stop but I will miss those summer dawns.

There are many who take it for granted, and this is only one of the reasons why I don't partake in catch & release if I can help it. It saddens me to see videos of people with über-expensive gear catching and throwing out tens of fish per trip. It's a waste, and at least quickly priesting them, eating them, and letting nothing have no use pays respect and thanks to the fish.

Its not easy to stop. My son wants to keep fishing but even he was sickened by the high mortality rate of the smaller sea fish that had swallowed the hook. I wish I knew exactly what it was that makes angling so addictive and feel so right but I guess it doesnt matter. Its difficult to come to terms with my conscience yet I have so many great memories - nearly a whole lifetime spent fishing, a garage full of gear, photos, note books.

As someone who fishes for a hobby and for food, I make use of live wells where I can to keep the fish I catch alive and breathing until I'm done for the day, and I have begun practicing Iki-Jime in order to humanely dispatch the fish when I'm ready to process them. And I don't believe in "catch and release" fishing. The only time you should ever harm an animal is to either feed yourself, or to protect yourself. So any fish that is big enough, I keep to eat. Otherwise you're just torturing them for the fun of it. And I only take what I can readily eat in the short term. When I have caught all the fish I need for the day, that means I'm done fishing.
