There's one more thing to consider when choosing a focal length: your build type. Wider lenses make you slimmer (which can be a good thing if you have some extra kilograms), ultra wide lenses also distort you and your face. Therefore if you're a slim/skinny type then you should avoid wide lenses in order not to look goofy.

Man, this is by far one of the best videos I’ve seen explaining focal lengths. I legitimately now have a good grasp of them all and how to use them from watching this. Thank you! Like Michael Scott said, “Why don’t you explain this to me like I’m 5.” 😂 You did that exactly. I appreciate you makinng this. 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻

Such a great reference video for people buying their first APS-C to get started on KZbin. It actually makes me think it's best to first buy a Kit Lens to experiment with the right focal length, then buy a good prime lens once knowing the best focal length / room setup.

Yep that’s a cracking idea although I’ve been playing around for years and still don’t know which is “best” to use some times haha! Glad you liked it!

Kit zoom lenses a often so bad it'll make you to quit photography. Better to buy some cheap but good prime lens like 50mm 1.8 or 35mm 1.8, and try it. Even if it will not be best for you video setup - at least you'll be able to shoot nice looking photos and videos in other situations. And this prime lens also will teach you what next to buy. While kit lens is most likely to be disappointment.

you don't divide to get the crop equivalent as you said, you multiply. So a 50 on a full frame produces the effect on a crop frame as if you had 80 on a full frame. So if you want to know what your cheaper crop frame picture will look like, just think of shooting with a longer focal length lens on a full frame. Most newbies are disappointed to discover that their 50 kit lens does not give them the picture of a 50, but actually works like an 80 on their inexpensive crop cameras. It also increases the F stop as well.

Thank you so, so much! This is the perfect video to help me understand what I may need. I have a full frame camera, and shooting at 50mm makes everything "too close/cropped". I don't have enough space to back the camera away. I'm planning on filming myself making art in my bedroom, and the space I have is quite small. Sounds like I need the 24 or 30mm lens. Thanks again!

I plan a trip to Italy, city as well as landscape. I would shoot a video mixed selfie mode like in your video for some talking stuff, mixed with B-roll with impressions of city scenes. So, for that B-roll I wonder which would be a go-to-focal length?

@creatorlife Hi! I make art content with a lot of overhead shots. What height did you use with the 50mm lens and what rig/set up? I just got a sony a 7s iii w a 50 mm and the 10-20 mm zoom and I am hoping to find a good overhead set up using these two lenses. Thanks so much!

So on my lumix g7, which is a micro 4/3rds, I would need to have a 25mm lens to replicate your 50mm lens? Is that correct?
@B-RollBooks Жыл бұрын
That is correct, micro four thirds has a crop factor of 2 so 25mm would replicate the field of view of a full frame 50mm. Sorry I'm 6 months late--hope you got it sorted.

I know best, 16mm. All else is either too wide or too in your face. Wide is good, people have a 5 second attention span these days, you need to encourage them to continue looking at your vista. If it's just your face, they've seen that and done that and judged it in the 5 second allotment. The closer the focal distance the more interesting the talent must be. Wider you can allow the viewer to travel a little while watching, so that they can have many 5 second allotments of what you are pitching. Why not 30 or 50 or 85, because focus... unless it's an action movie, you may as well be sending your viewer to the next clip. 16mm; people can look at anything in the vista, while your talent occupies the centre. I have no photographic experience, I'm making it up as I go along.
