I'm about to head out on my very first Backcountry Discovery Route motorcycle camping adventure, and I've spent a bunch of time figuring out exactly what motorcycle camping gear I'm going to take on this week-long adventure. If you're headed out for a BDR and wondering what's on my BDR gear list so that you can get some ideas, check out this video and the full motorcycle camping gear list (with links) in the description. Every item of motocamping gear in this video is something I've used, tested, and that I recommend. If I didn't, I would not be taking it on the Washington BDR.
It took me some time to figure out what to bring on a BDR, so if my BDR gear list can help anyone else out, then I'm happy to share it.

I know this was 7 months ago but your list is good for me, thanks. Heading to Georgia for a 3 day off-road riding course then out west to a National Park on my new Aprilia Tuareg 660 for a week to 10 days. But Im towing it from my tripped out 4Runner and set up a base camp at each destination. I have a fair amount of on-road and a little off- road on my KTM 390 in another country. Really looking forward to learning and practicing. I enjoy your videos and big rock Moto (Ian) and others. You all inspire this old man.

"It weighs nothing." The saying in the Infantry (and backpacking) is ounces become pounds, pounds become pain. All of those lightweight items can add up. I totally understand some luxuries, we all bring things we don't HAVE to have. But being aware of where those sacrifices are being made will make the overall trip more enjoyable. Sometimes it's also a case of having the space and wanting to fill it. Having 150 liters of storage makes it more justifiable, you even say you have the space so you're bringing it. I find limiting the amount of space I have makes me more focused on what I really need. I would be curious if you ever weighed everything you packed onto the bike?

Definitely, as a long distance packer, I figured if I could get pack plus all gear (not including water) under 35 pounds and still be comfortable, I'd be cheering. Not always doable, but was always my goal. On my motorcycle, every pound and the placement of every pound affects the handling. So I still try to reduce it just for that reason. Oh, and for picking up the bike which is guaranteed I'll dump at some point.

Dork, can you make a video where the complete opposite would occur. In which a guy on his bike on a BDR could take a tarp and a blanket and eat only dehydration meals or something of that sort. It would be a really cool extreme! minimalist! BDR! Ok cool, thanks.

Hello mr. Dork, Again thanks for your video about the gear. I also am a gear nerd. But luckely over the years i only have a few things changed in the past ten years. My bikes are but not so much my gear. I have a question about tankbags. I finally have my Norden. Allready have a sw-motech tankbag. A gs version. But their are no tankrings for it. There is a new tankring. But i find it so strange. Cause with it the tankbag is almost 20 cm above the buddysit. In place facing the sky the tankbag is facing towards you with an angle. I think that it is impossible to do riding while standing. What do you think ? I really like to have a tankbag while on vacation for my daily stuff. But with this bike it seems not possible. Greetings from the Neherlands,

It's nice to see an effort made in terms of bear safety but unless you're hanging the dry bag 12 feet up and 6 feet out from a tree trunk it's not great practice. You'll eventually have a bear get into that bag if you leave it unattended and cause problems for the next person that comes through, it's not a bad idea to use a bear canister, if you can fit a few luxury items then one more safety item will fit too.

It'd be nice to what all this weighs together. Knowing what weight it is will help people plan what to go with. Seems like a good setup, but 50lbs, or 150lbs. My suspension would like to know.

That's a lot of stuff! I try to moto camp the same way I did when ultralight backpacking or mountain biking or kayaking. It looks like you filled 150L of storage. I carry a 66L dry bag on the pillion and rear rack, and no panniers. I wish I could find a taller 80L roll top dry bag that had a slightly smaller footprint that has tie downs on the bottom of the bag so I can open the bag easily when it's on the bike.

With unused luggage capacity, packing up seems easier and you can give your down items more room to loft which improves their lifespan.

I wonder what you do for water. We use a gravity filter to keep out girardia, etc. Diarrhea and motorcycle riding gear is a panic inducing combo. Also, does that strap bag have a tow strap, or maybe you tie the gear down with a tow rope? Hope your trip goes well. Saw that you lost a guy, and hope for no more of that!

Good lord, 150L of gear? Have fun with that shit. All of those luxuries at the camp will make the bike handle so poorly on the trail. Honestly, you should try to get it down to under 80L, which shouldn't be hard since you have so much redundant gear. Remember Light is Right!
