Um actually in the anime Fullmetal Alchemist Ed and Al try to hide the fact that Al is a suit of armour with a soul bonded to it because then people would know they attempted human transmutation because if people found out then they'd be yeeted into prison because it's a sin. Therefore it's not Al's 'claim to fame'.

What existed before the Rakatan? Basically nothing in the known SW galaxy was evolved enough to perform higher thought functions that could create droids until those weird fish-people conquered the galaxy and began experimenting. I would have said, not all droids are particularly sentient or sapient. Though many do develop some form of it, eventually evolving in to true autonomy unless regular memory wipes are performed.
