We toured German prisons in Hameln and Berlin, Germany and what we saw was incredible. This is what a prison system looks like when it is centered around treating people humanely. It showed us that we can do things a different way in the U.S.

One thing that too many Americans don't understand is that taking away your freedom of movement is already punishment enough. Not being able to decide when to get up, when to eat, when to be where, when to got to bed, is a big strain on the human psyche. Being in Prison is the punishment, the prison itself shouldn't be another punishment on top
@SeyidAr
@SeyidAr 4 жыл бұрын
While that's true, there are additional punishments on top of that. No access to the internet, limited room space, limited forms of entertainment. Even in Germany, you are getting punished a little on top of the incarceration itself. Otherwise no one would be scared of commiting crimes. Prison would be like a cheap hotel.

And I think the US should start to think over, by just one simple thing, that all those videos have in common: They state, that in germany, prisoners are threated with dignity and they dont lose theirs. @@jessicabrack2846 Fun fact. The Nazis didn't invent the race ideology. At that time it was considered the scientific consensus. The Nazis and Germany were just the only ones who acted opon this "knowledge" . The Nazi party was very revolutionary as in "far away from the churches", so this opened an ideological road to use the scientific consensus of that time to justify all kind of amoral crimes. The allies were pretty much all believing in the superiority of the white race. They just didn't want Germany to rule Europe. Churchill for example was totally ok with what has been done to the Aboriginals as he thought of them as lesser to the Brittish.

@ich bins That simply doesn't work, the vast majority of criminals don't want to be criminals, but they just don't know what else to do. No matter how hard the punishment, they don't think "don't do it", they think "don't get caught". Even if a society would manage to guarantee prosecution, most criminals would try again as soon as they are released, simply because they don't know anything else. That's what the American system counts on, they rely on the slave labor.

As a German I must say that what you're saying about prisons in the U.S. is sad. Shouldn't the goal be to reintegrate prisoners into society and show them alternative ways to make a living and to let them know that they do have a value? Also, if I can put them in a job, I have another taxpayer. Sure there's punishment, that's why they're locked up, but there needs to be a silver lining on the horizon. I watched a documentary on prisoners in the U.S. who were training dogs and I thought that was a brilliant idea.

The example of Germany might not be the best, but it is a better example for many. What I mean with that? Germany is a big country, with a big economy and therefore many see it as an easier comparison to a country the size of the US. It also is fitting that the stereotype for most Americans is, that Germans are heartless/strict/robot kind people.

Its a pity to see for me, how a rich country like USA, develope in several Areas to a third world country in the last 30 years. US Justice and Prison System in general is comparable to third world countries. The same for healthscare and the public education System. USA is not aware in a human dignity way for their poor people. It is driven by the rich people only by capitalism in a final state.I like my american friends very much, but your country need dramatically changes in socialisation. Hopefully to see that many american identify the problems, now its the big work for changings, which is not easy, because USA is a huge country with different states, state laws, etc. Your former president was on the right way, but he failed in several Areas due to the Power of lobbyists. Believe me, in Germany is not all perfect, but from human dignity state, we are lightyears in front of USA. And when you dont like germany due to our history, where we learned from, compare to netherland, finland, sweden or whatever, we all have the same status in human dignity.

I believe, the biggest issue of the US isn't the reggression, they're not to big on that in comparison to some other countries (though they still do it). It is they're lack of growing further as a country. It is the idea of "being the best country on earth" that stopps them from growing to be better. They're not trying because they don't see fault in themselves. So, please, dear US-Americans: Do try and grow. Do not think of being the best. There is no best. Just try to be better than you are, not holding onto a false status. Thank you. Good luck.

1st sentence in the 1st article of the German constitution, written in the shadow of WW 2. "Human dignity is inviolable." That´s the measure which society, laws and gouvernment has to take care. In my opinion, it is a wonderful sentence. There is no higher value, than human dignity.

I think it's a double edged blade. It keeps everyone safe from each other. But it's also the main reason why calling someone names or speaking your mind potentially get's you imprisoned or punished. It's the reason why there IS sensorship as freedom of speech as that is just a value that ranks so low it's in article 5. Even the church is more important than freedom of speech as they got their influence secured in article 4. This is how heresy is actually punishable in Germany...freedom speech is just not as much of a value than faith...

Eye for an eye is too ingrained in the US justice system. But it doesn‘t help, it doesn't work. It must be about redemption, rehabilitation. Some may say those inmates almost live in luxury. But the biggest punishment imaginable is their freedom being removed. Anything more than that is just cruel and counterproductive. Btw, life sentence is 15 years in Germany. Except for real psychos where public safety cannot be guaranteed. They won‘t just be released but moved to a different location to have a fairly normal live (except being free). Hard lesson learned after WW2 and number one in our constitution: Human dignity is inviolable.

Ok to all those who think criminals deserve worse: Prisons should not be about punishing people. The entire law system is not meant to create "justice" if you think justice is punishing criminals for what they have done. Laws and prison are supposed to lower the crime rate. When good prisons, where criminals are treated well, ACTUALLY lower the crime rate and lead to for example less murders per capita, why would you not do that... I dont care if criminals are treated "too well" as long as it's working out. The goal should always be to lower the crime rate. That's it. I don't care for "justice" and punishment and if you prefer justice over a low crime rate and less murders you should rethink your perspective.

First there must be a change in the way society thinks, only then changes can be. It is clear again here that if you violate essential principles such as human dignity, the result cannot be positive. The high number of brutal acts of violence and the inhuman housing and treatment of the prisoners has its origin in the linear and hitherto unreflected thinking of society and the judiciary. As a European, I am pleased that a delicate rethink is taking place after all. USA - please do not forget that a cultural change must take place before the system change. Treat people with dignity, leave no one behind and respect privacy.

A prison is a place of education. If people are agressiv, do bad things, they come to prison to learn how to behave socially - not aggressive. The have to learn how to structure their day.
