My son is AuADHD, so he has Autism and ADHD. He is only 8. Since he was about 4 years old, his ADHD manifested as emotional dysregulation, IE he was very very angry and disruptive. If it weren't for his meds, he'd be struggling with making friends and doing well at school. They've done studies that show that kids who are treated with stimulants as a child, give their brain the tools to grow and make the right connections, so that as teens/young adults they can stop taking the stimulants and live a normal, med free life. What I find interesting is, when he takes his ADHD medicine, you can see once it takes affect, his calm, intellectual, interested and creative autism side shine so brightly. You mentioned in the podcast sensory issues. People with AuADHD have an even more difficult time with them because their ADHD can manifest as sensory input, which aggravates the autism side. It's really quite interesting and in a way, sad. I am grateful to have such a supportive medical team for him that is setting him up for success... now if only I could get the medical professionals to diagnose me..
