This random group had a higher view of American life than I expected. As a Greek born American who recently acquired dual citizenship with Greece, and who came here as an infant, I think many of the interviewees overrated the "quality of life" in America. I will posit that it is probably the best place to be rich because your social obligation is minimal, and maybe the best place to get rich if you are a highly driven person or someone with a unique idea that can be turned into a successful product. That said, having visited Greece in each of the past two years, I would say that on an average income, Greece has a better quality of life and clearly a superior, healthy diet, and MUCH less obesity despite the abundance of food. Unless you are in the top 10% of Americans in terms of wealth, your life is most likely consumed by work and stress. There is a lot of alienation among the youth. We may have the best Universities, but the quality of secondary education is dependent on zip code. Unless healthcare is provided by your employer, the costs are prohibitive. The gun culture, though only fetishized by a relatively small minority, has a very high profile within the overall culture, and there is no comparison in violent crime rates. Also, the greatest thing about America, its Constitution and political stability have been shaken in recent years. The young man who said that America is 30 years ahead of today's Greece is way off. I was actually impressed by a lot of the infrastructure in Greece, save for the archaic plumbing system. The degree of digitization is comparable, and America's physical infrastructure has stagnated for decades in relation to the rest of the developed world. In the 1960's we were 30 years ahead of Greece, but for the past 45 years, an ethos of individualism gone amok has replaced the common good. I realize that it is tough for many of the young in Greece in terms of employment and salaries. However, I noticed that happiness was much less dependent on wealth than it is here. Please enjoy your historically significant and stunningly beautiful country. I plan to retire there when I can.

I'm a Greek American who lived in Thessaloniki for 2 years. I was studying Byzantine Music. What I miss the most about Greece is the Orthodox faith as lived by those who are interested there. I know that most Greeks today are not really interested in Orthodox Christianity, but there are so many ways to be involved in an Orthodox Christian community there. I have no living relatives in Greece, but I have family by faith still there. Faith seems to be a little discussed aspect of life on Easy Greek. I love what you offer, though. Thank you so much.

I am the first of my Greek born parents born in the US. I’ve been to Greece in the 50’s,70’s, and 2019. People are the same people all over. Some smart, poor, rich, if you work you can make a good life. US has modern technology and maybe easier to advance if your are willing to work, and get lucky. Not everybody becomes a star or super rich. Americans admire Greece for the history, a more relaxed atmosphere, we don’t take the middle of the day off. I love my homeland but have always been in love with Greece and my blood. One always wants the best of both, but that’s life. Love your Easy Greek, very funny and informative to me.

@Loofah Ελα φίλε, nice to hear from a fellow west coast Greek! I'm from Seattle. Life in Greece is good for all the reasons that you would assume, good weather, great food, there are churches everywhere if you are orthodox and enjoy going to services. Also it has been great for me on a personal level cause I've gotten in touch with the culture/language/dances etc in ways that I wouldn't have the opportunity to do in the USA. The cons are the terrible bureaucracy, work opportunities are sparse and employers generally treat their employees quite poorly (don't pay on time, overworked without pay, etc), and the public services are not great either. For me I am thinking of coming back to the states soon since I am a musician and the income for musicians in Greece is hard to live off of if you want to raise a family. But if you have a remote job with decent pay that you can do overseas, or have some money saved up to live there for a year or two like I did I would recommend going. :)

@@hariszark7396 smh, I take it you didn't pay much attention to Trump's foreign policies and international alignments? He stilled carried interventionist policies, specifically in Venezuela and Bolivia. The Republican Party as a whole has floated the idea of invading Mexico. He dropped the largest bomb since WW2 in Syria, increasing drone strikes more than Obama's Administration (which was already a lot), escalated tensions with China and Iran (including assassinating their top general), AND the Abraham Accords and establishing Jerusalem as the location of the U.S. Embassy DIRECTLY lead to Oct 7th attack in Israel. This doesn't even begin to touch on Trump's closest political Allies having ties in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Russia. All of which poses a threat to Greece's existence. Biden's not great on foreign policy, but he comes nowhere near the ridiculous policies Trump had.

Americans have always held Greek-Americans and Greeks in high regard. Greeks in turn I sense have softened their opinion of Americans in the past few decades. The new generation of Greeks have a much more nuanced and accurate view of Americans in general than what existed back in the early 1980's. Not sure why this might be the case, the respective gov'ts rapprochement has definitely helped. China's rise and all the turmoil at Greece's front door may have made both parties rethink or "reappreciate" our longstanding relationship. Greece's gifts to western civilization is something Americans are understanding at a greater rate with more Americans coming to vacation to Greece. Continued cultural exchanges have helped in fostering ties. This will only continue to grow. Even Easy Greek plays a small but important role. Appreciate the video and the frankness of the responders.

From my experience having met dozens of americans, having worked with a few, and having overheard hundreds of american tourists... They are very proper and polite and respectful. Also often wholesome. To the point where you have to think twice before making a joke. And they have this (kind of insulting) habit of swapping curse words with similar sounding gibberish words, like we're at a kindergarten. They are also very social and confident. And competitive in a good way. The older ones are, anyway. I've met a few younger americans, my age or younger. And they are the exact opposite of the older americans. Their personality seems stuck at 15yo, while grown-up responsibilities are causing them 10 different self-diagnosed disorders. Americans are also very giving and charitable. They also wear hats for no reason, even at night. Like an accessory. Weird. They are also very nice and friendly. Except for this woman from NY who was being horrible to everyone with the excuse of "i'm not a b**ch, i'm just from NY" as if that gives you a free pass to be a dick or something. Is that true, newyorkers? They are generally horrible in geography, or any world history before WW2. This negative stereotype is unfortunately very true from my experience. They also have the palate of a toddler. Often I see americans of all ages and sizes be tourists in countries with amazing cuisines and they will dislike everything, and look to eat only pizza, pasta, burger. I personally want to go to Philadelphia to have a cheese steak tour. And then go to Texas because all the nicest kindest americans i've met were from there, and also BBQ. And also in Nashville because it seems cool I dunno. And ok sure, New York and Vegas because one just has to.

Funnily enough, I am very bored with our food (in reference to your palate analysis). I like burgers yes, I like pizza and all that. But I love trying new foods from all over the world and I like them so far. The issue is most of us aren’t *used* to the food y’all have, so we automatically hate it out of bias. Recently I’ve been very curious about Greek food. Also PS, anyone from New York is an asshole, in fact anyone from the East Coast is an asshole.

Smyrna (Smyrni mou agapimeni) is a total bullsh*t of a movie. It was the Greek army who burned down Smyrna not the Turks. In 1917, Greeks had burned almost half of Thessaloniki to drive Turks out of the city which shows that same technique had been tried in Smyrna as well. You better recommend My Big Fat Greek Wedding 1 and 2. Btw, do not trust America, they've been planning to "use" Greece again in the very near future.

I think that Greece is progressing in many ways in contrast with the USA. State of the Art tech is only available in the bigger Cities. I personally think that the most modern Cities in the world are in Northren Europe, Gulf states, Far-East and Australia. With of course the exception of major Cities in Canada and the US. The reason for that is that the newer cities invest more in diversity of infrastructure and the implementation of technology for communal and collective use. Greece is overdriving this since 2019 by upgrading Green electrcity plants, roads, metro systems. America neglects most of it's infrastructure as long as the electricity works and the Gas Stations are operating, the country will not complain.

American (from Arizona) learning Greek here! The topic of Americans being overweight is in part due to the so-called abundance here, but also the sad reality of us largely being reliant on large corporations for all of our food. You have to go out of your way to eat locally-produced foods and it's a lot more expensive than the commercially available options you see in stores. Also, what's approved by the USDA is not in line with a lot of the European nations.. Take McDonald's - you can order a Hot 'n' Spicy here and abroad, but it is not the same product! The further issue of this is that most Americans aren't even aware of these systemic food issues and that's where you get a lot of well-intentioned people who are overweight because we're more at the mercy of big corporations dictating our diets rather than actually being raised to know what real food is. Or for those that do understand, having access to real food has become something only the wealthy (like, upper-middle class and higher) can afford. Also, I agree, we drive way too much. I'd love to see more places (especially in cities) that are more accessible for walking and biking. The USA is just so huge that in some states you're miles between destinations, but also the way the cities are set up is very inconvenient to travel unless you have a car (or it's over 100F for half the year, like where I live)! I think it's also hard to stereotype Americans because each state can vary so much. Like California culture is way different than what you see in Minnesota. In Arizona alone, most of it's an arid desert, but we also have mountains, lakes, and places that snow! I loved watching this video! I know American's get a bad rep in a lot of places but it's always interesting to hear from our friends in other countries!

In countries like Norway and the Netherlands where weekly work hours are the lowest (about 27-31) the culture is different, in Mediterranean countries family ties are much closer. Sorry for double posting The words Iran & Persia both carry a tone of mystery & interest to Greeks. It's kind of like what people in the West think about China & Japan (both interesting cultures & civilizations!) The country's regime is perceived as somewhat tough to its opponents but Greek views on it are still somewhat positive as Iran has allied itself to Russia, which has the respect of most Greeks. Now about the Persian people we don't have much opinion as we know few things about Iran. There was that time during 4th grade at school when Greek pupils felt a little proud that Greece beat a stronger country 2.5k years ago, but that's it. We have no ill feelings for the Persian invasion today. Most Greeks don't like history subject much because they found it hard at school & brought bad marks at home. We lack knowledge of Iranian/Persian history. Many Greeks don't even know that Iran is the modern successor state of Persia. That's more or less about the past. If you come to Greece you won't have any problems if you tell people you're Persian. They'll greet you & you won't have problems when asking for help or even socializing with the Greek people :) Iran is an amazing country just like the rest of the world :) :) Have a nice day, Sir!

I love them, I believe the world is lucky (or, rather, God loves us) to have America and the Americans as the leading nation, long live the US of A, God bless America and the American people. To answer to some opinions heard, they are very polite people, they are not "dumb" they might just appear so to us because we are not so unconditionally polite with and caring for everybody, as they are and this may look naive to us. I don' t resent them for " policing" the globe after WW2, in fact I'd wish them to continue doing so because I tremble to the idea of who else might be willing to take over!! Freedom, equality and justice for all as well as the right of the individuals to pursue happiness in their lives, the most important and unique contribution of the american political thinking and constitutional philosophy to the human civilization. I wish we, Greece, would be allowed some day to enter the qeue in order to be accepted and join as the fifty-something State (of A+E).

Ernest Hemingway by A Foreigner I like Americans. They are so unlike Canadians. They do not take their policemen seriously. They come to Montreal to drink. Not to criticize. They claim they won the war. But they know at heart that they didn't. They have such respect for Englishmen. They like to live abroad. They do not brag about how they take baths. But they take them. Their teeth are so good. And they wear B.V.D.'s all the year round. I wish they didn't brag about it. They have the second best navy in the world. But they never mention it. They would like to have Henry Ford for president. But they will not elect him. They saw through Bill Bryan. They have gotten tired of Billy Sunday. Their men have such funny hair cuts. They are hard to suck in on Europe. They have been there once. They produced Barney Google, Mutt and Jeff. And Jiggs. They do not hang lady murderers. They put them in vaudeville. They read the Saturday Evening Post And believe in Santa Claus. When they make money They make a lot of money. They are fine people.

Homophobia is an obstacle for the most of the Greeks. Not that you can’ t find it here. You are more accepted in this area where i am. Whoever you are, however you are. And i like people here more. Open minded, otherwise Americans are humans like Greeks. Greeks have a good reputation about hospitality, it depends on the Greeks. Americans here made me feel welcomed from the beginning.

When it comes to gay rights, I definitely think Greece has improved to where it was even 10 years ago. Yes, there's still room for growth and improvement, but there's been a shift in Greece in their attitudes towards gay people.

America is one United country about the same size of Europe. It’s divided into 50 states (plus territories like Puerto Rico and Guam). I always find it interesting for Europeans to consider America though because it would be like asking Americans their opinion of Europe and then pretending that all of Europe was one monolithic culture. Not an impossible question, but it would assume the American was familiar with all those various cultures that make up Europe and the fact that they are different. Same is true in the reverse.

Most people in Europe cannot accurately discern the differences between states in the US. Same goes in reverse. We just aren't so knowledgeable as a whole about what goes on in each other's side of the Atlantic.

@@thanosnfinity8109 that's an interesting point of view. I'm from Australia, born to Greek parents. In Australia I always feel more Greek than Australian and in Greece, I can definitely feel the influences of my birth country. I think when one is born in Australia or USA to immigrant parents, I find many of us have a yearning to connect with our heritage and we are often raised with a mixture of both cultures.

No Greek is thinking "let's marry the Americans (scam them) in order to acquire a green card which will get us out of here". Hence, it's technically untrue and unfair representation on "what Greeks think". I've never heard a similar case in my 30 years of life. The Albanians, OK, I get it, they might have this mindset, I don't know. At least you were good enough to ask him about his passport. You asked him for the same reason I found it foul. You found it at least strange, likewise, which made you wonder.

It's really hard for Greeks to judge Americans, because we're so immersed in Americanism we've basically swallowed America whole lol. Recently there was a TV music contest, and a little gypsy kid sang a 60's song of an old folk singer, and everyone was so moved and cheered, and I suddenly realised that gypsies are the only ones who have preserved Greek musicality, because they don't have TV. If you pick out a random person on the street and tell them to sing a song, it will probably be an English one, and even if Greek still not sounding Greek, more like an English song translated into Greek. Our source of information and role models stopped being our society and surroundings, and started being TV and the internet. I was born in Athens in 1978 and basically watched the same TV as an American of that age. If you ask me what's your favourite TV show or movie it'll probably be an American sitcom or a Hollywood movie, with a few exceptions. So in conclusion the hardest question for a Greek person isn't what Americans are like, but what Greeks are like. And this is our challenge for the future, to redefine being Greek, and not to pretend to be a Parisian or a New Yorker.
