I totally agree. A lot of people in the past didn’t like the M1911 for concealed carry due to its weight and bulk. But Conan was a big, buff barbarian from the far North (Scottish Highlander or Viking is what I think Howard had in mind). It would’ve been nothing for him to lug that brick around. He might’ve even gone for an extended slide version if he could. While Conan was a barbarian, he wasn’t the dumb stereotype seen in movies, TV and role playing games. He was well traveled, could be the cunning sneak thief, and he knew how to speak multiple languages. Maybe he’d pretend to be as dumb as civilized people believed but that was about it. Elaborate stratagems weren’t his strong suit. But I suspect he’d be OK with councilors and cunning men using them at his command as King of Aquilonia.

I wonder why 1911s weren't more popular with police departments back in the day. It's a solid and reliable design with good magazines in it.

It wasn't that reliable. It could and did jam, though not often. Not every police department wanted to train up on how to clear jams quickly. It was also big and heavy as was the ammo. So police tended to favor the .38 Special.

@@EricDaMAJ I guess they are made better now (tolerances and all). Personally I carry a five shot J-Frame for personal protection. I figure I'm unlikely to need it. If I do need it, it is comfortable enough that I will have it. And it will probably be sufficient for the job.

@@Fudmottin The 1911's rep has a strange history. They were dependable back in WW I & II compared to most other automatic pistols. But they served so long and suffered such maltreated in the military that by the 1980s the last military ones made during the early 1960s were in dreadfull sorry. I served in '86 and can attest to that. The rifling was gone, the springs were potatoes, and the bluing was more overcast grey. What really poisoned the well were the lousy knock offs bad gun companies sold when the patent expired. During that time the only good 1911s left were in Boomer hands, museums, safes or made by boutique gun companies for absurd prices. Gen X and Millennials found 1911s wanting compared to a basic Glock. Yet they got an earful of Boomer Funds talking up the 1911 and disparaging the "Tupperware gun." In the past decade or those generations got rich enough to try custom 1911s and some companies made quality, affordable 1911s. This caused them to change their minds (very grudgingly in many cases) about the 1911. So now it's making a mild comeback.

Greg, find a Tisas government 1911A1. I have one and out of the box it is perfect three years old and no problems. But Conan would have carried a 45 acp revolver like Indiana Jones. IMO..

@@LionquestFitness they're great guns....after decades of Dept issued striker fired pistols, retirement meant that I could finally carry anything I wanted & I stumbled across a great deal on a Tisas 1911A1 in 9mm ....& it was a true joy to get reacquainted again with the 1911 platform. After the usual 2-3 hickups during the first couple of hundred rounds, it settled down & was totally reliable & as stated, even with the tiny G.I. sights, it was easy to produce nice tight groups. Tisas did a great job of copying Browning's design right down to the convex grip screws..which allow a .45ACP cartridge rim to be used as a screwdriver to replace during a field expedient repair. In fact, Browning designed the 1911 so that a fired .45ACP cartridge could be used to replace a lost recoil spring plug if needed. I finally sold it & upgraded to a Springfield Range Officer because of the better sights, but if necessary I'd happily carry that Tisas for self defense.

We all know Conan went for a great broadsword, four “feet of Valkarthan steel.” But, by Crom! A brace of .45’s would come in handy! I, too, loved the stories. Many are still in my library. It’s unfortunate that Howard’s suicide at 30, after he heard his mother was in a coma, overshadows the other aspects of his life and leaves the impression of a weak “Mama’s basement” kind of guy. He was an interesting man and his stories will live on.

Greg, got to agree Robert E. Howard created some special characters especially Conan. He was around when other authors like August Derleth and L. Sprauge DeCamp were writing and they and others were responsible for creating the SCA or Society for Creative Anachronism when people frequently used their imagination. Thanks much my friend!

Hi Greg, Conan usually carried a large sword, what we in hema would call a longsword, and a dagger. I can picture the 1911 to play the role of the sidearm, but I think Conan's primary would be a sawn-off BAR or a Tommy gun. He picked fights with groups, some powerful full-auto fire would have been usefull.

As far as fictional characters that carried firearms go, The Phantom was famous for the 1911 handguns he wielded. Conan, I could see with a Desert Eagle in .50 AE. If Vinnie Jones could pack one in Snatch then I think Conan could also.

I loved the Robert E. Howard stories and the later books written in partnership with (or perhaps by) L. Sprague DeCamp. Conan dispised magic/sorcery and had an affinity for fine steel. However, if he did get beyond that and carry a handgun it would be a big bore revolver, .44 Magnum or larger and definitely vintage Smith and Wesson (pre-locks). The revolvers would be stainless steel like his favorite swords. A modern day Conan would carry two guns, one a snubby with fixed sights (his back up gun), worn in an ankle holster and the other a six-inch with adjustable sights worn in leather holster on a three inch wide leather belt, with an enormous Bowie knife on his non-dominant (Conan doesn't have "a weak side, just two strong sides) side to balance the weight of the revolver. Conan would also wear body armor as he always donned his chain mail whenever possible in the later books. Why revolvers? Simple, raw power. The things that Conan fights (monsters and such) are not about to be taken with the relatively weak .45 ACP cartridge. Plus, Conan fights up close and dirty, he would need guns that, once empty, could be used to bludgeon a mythical beast to death. The six-inch barrel makes a good grip when using your empty gun as a club. Polymer is NOT an option.

The Atlantean sword. The CONAN sword was an absurdly large sword of a king. In the book, the king is a giant. The Atlantean, if we're a handgun ,would be a large unwieldy flamboyant piece. This is why I chose the Desert Eagle in 50 A E.

I'm gonna go with the rugged and extremely durable .44 Mag Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan (the SP101's extra large brother)... More than powerful enough, but not with too much recoil - and quick to draw in a close quarters self-defense situation, as a snub nose. 😉

My only experience with Conan comes from the Arnold movies. Watching your video and your remarks about Howard, his era, and likely inspirations, I decided that Conan would have likely been seen carrying a pair of Colt Dragoons. Or fast forward a bit into the 1930s, either a pair of S&W registered magnums or M1917s. Anyway, excellent video.

I think he would lean toward a revolver instead of the mighty 1911a1; either a big bore Colt, Smith and Wesson or maybe the British Webley (while not as beautiful as the American revolvers they have a clarm as well ). He was a barbarian and while having the power of the auto guns the reliability of the revolver would have been needed as well.

I ran chips mags in my combat commander. Never had a problem! They worked every time! Tried some Wilson mags… had malfunctions out the wazoo!

I have much respect for the 1911. Not being a large man, I sometimes need to be more discrete in what I carry and how. That said, I transitioned to a shoulder rig for the ranch carry (climbing in and out of the truck to get out and do tasks). It is a copy of the leather shoulder holsters the military had in the 40s. I about have it broken in now and yes, my older Springfield GI model works well in that holster. There are many days when a shoulder rig will not work so a leather Yaqui holster at the 3 o'clock outside the waist with G19 for max physical mobility while working.

That's a fun question and some great history! I'll go out on a limb and guess a Winchester 1887 shotgun with the barrel and stock cut down. And he'd carry it cross draw. Although the 1911 might be a little more practical! Keep us posted on the Girsan, by the way... I love my RIA 1911, but my local shop has a couple Turkish 1911s for cheap, and I'm intrigued... 45 long colt or 44 spl in a revolver. Might have been and option also. Bet somewhere he would have also wnd old Winchester 1897 riot shotgun also. As for a kinfe, i figure a good old bowie. If he had carried a 38 ,i bet he would have done like John Benteen's character Neal Fargo in the Fargo series( kindle on Amazon) that i read as a kid in the 70s who took and cut the round end of the bullet off and then cut an X to have it work better. He probably would have had a switch blade hidden somewhere on him for back up. But who knows for sure. Also Craig ,what brand of knife was that.

When I was.a kid back in the late 1940s, earley 1950s, I used to like the Phantom comic series. He carried 2 Colt 1911s. There was also a movie serial. The Phantom was an American adventure comic strip, first published by Lee Falk in February 1936. The main character, the Phantom, is a fictional costumed crime-fighter who operates from the fictional African country of Bangalla.

A Bowie is a shoo in. But if he served as a mercenary overseas he might've gone for the Kukri knife. That's a man's knife too. If he served in WW II he might go for the Marine K-Bar knife. Or maybe even the Fairbairn-Sykes knife. The Fairbairn-Sykes knife doesn't have the field utility those other knives have but it's a purpose built easily concealed assassination blade.

nice pistol. how's the trigger? that's what makes them so great, that and the heft to handle such a big round. i put ambi safeties on both my billboard gi rock island and my argentine sistema. the ria is my bedside gun to get me to the 12 gauge. if you ever see a llama minimax ii (made in vitoria before llama went bankrupt- not the ones made by former workers later) at a good price, i think you would like it. short barrel, great trigger, and double stack. it's the only llama i would actually carry. it goes on the right side as back-up to the 605 so it doesn't need an ambi safety.

@@LionquestFitness they had a reputation for soft metal and spotty quality control at times, but they even extensively advertised the minimax as having an "upgraded new steel design", whatever that means. mine runs 100%. I typically like the astras and stars better, in that order. i usually use a blue astra a75 in 40 cal as back-up in the winter and a stainless a75 in 9mm in the summer. they use the same mags but they hold one more 9mm round than 40. i just traded for a firestar plus in starvel finish that may take the summer job as it is double stack. i haven't shot it yet.
