Just so you know, Chopper is still a puppy and any behaviors he has now may not be present when he reaches full maturity at around 2 years old. He may be fine with dogs now and he may be friendly with strangers but that could change when he matures. Socialization helps but does not prevent it. Remember, friendliness is the exception not the expectation of the breed.
@whisper10766 ай бұрын
Yeah. People want to practice neutrality with DA or SSA breeds. They can't be expected to be friendly after puppyhood or adolescence. I have a Shiba Inu and Japanese Akita Inu who were socialized to be neutral. They were never forced into interactions, and now have a healthy respect for other dogs and people as long as they receive the same.
@JR-zm5uw6 ай бұрын
He is not a puppy he is an adolescent. You’re right that behavior can still change, but I wouldn’t expect him to go polar opposite within a few months until he is fully grown up. So if he is very friendly dog now he probably will remain mostly friendly. The key socialization period for dogs is until they are 16 weeks old, which is also the age until they are considered puppies. If behavior changes you can always find a way to deal with it, but I feel like it’s not very helpful to give an already scared person that just went through a traumatic experience more things to worry about, which most likely won’t even happen.
@whisper10766 ай бұрын
@@JR-zm5uw I understand your sentiment, but too many people get DA/SSA breeds, and are surprised when the dog becomes more selective in adulthood. It's normal, and nothing to be afraid of. 🤷

If you dont train your dog and can't handle them then whatever happens it's YOUR responsibility. You are the one who has to make sure your dog is safe to take outside and that includes the dog listening to you and the commands. In the end the dog is part of your pack and you lead. Not training your dog is neglect and so many of you aren't ready to admit it.

Make sure to hold owner accountable. Your situation happened to me exactly, unprovoked on a sidewalk walk. My baby is a frenchie and was attached by a German Shepard that was aggressive. I didn’t hold the owner accountable (at the time no blood was shed and I wrestled the dog off my baby boy) and that same dog mauled an older man’s arm that was in our neighborhood. I felt so guilty when he showed up to my house with his arm wrapped up in a sling asking me to help him press charges as he heard from our neighbors the same dog attacked my dog.
@jzeomo4 ай бұрын
This! I have a german shepard a big breed, a working line, regardless of any type of dog THEY SHOULD BE TRAINED. I knew since i got my girl training is necessary not only for her safety, my own and others. It upsets me when most dog attacks are from are from careless owners. My dog on a walk, was almost attacked by a smaller breed dog because the owner didn’t pay attention while their dog was on a long leash. Luckily my dog stayed calm and kept doing her thing. Big breeds deserve love, but it’s understandable what Hang went through. When i walk my girl always people dart to the opposite side walk and that may be their dog was attacked, relative etc. If it’s for your safety yes. It just sucks owners don’t do their job properly.

@@ecupcakes2735 My girl is quite big, and she doesn’t lunge, had the other day 3 mini poodles go crazy seeing my dog, my girl got a bit scared so we walked the other way, the owner of these smaller breed dogs kept going closer (while their dogs were going absolutely crazy) saying their dog is friendly and it’s okay. I advocate for my dog by giving her space and what this owner did was HORRIBLE not only to their dogs but not respecting my space by going closer literally had to jog away. Its important regardless big or small dog is to respect the owner and DO not to leash greetings until you know what type of dog you can control, or honestly i avoid them in general. It’s sad that Hang went through this, any type of dog should be protected and given proper space in their course of training. Pits can be the sweetest type of dog but given to a careless owners it’s so sad that it ends up like this.

😂 "Vet tech said Chopper's a little dopey but that's his charm." I'm glad he's doing well and seems to forget the incident already. In reality, I think Chopper's quite smart and could *tell/smell* the difference between new pups he met to the one who attacked him. In appearance, they looked similar to us but Chopper knew. That's why he was fine with them.
@scratchaboobear6 ай бұрын
You have PTSD from this experience now. I would honestly sue the owner if I were you for the vet bills and now because you have PTSD, and you have a fear of walking your dog. She probably didn’t have vaccinations on her dog and that’s why she refused to provide you with them. Therefore you had to go to the hospital to get a check up to make sure you didn’t have anything like rabies so therefore she should have to also pay for your doctor bills. You also have a lot of cuts and bruises all over your body from that incident so I think she should have to pay for that too.

I’m so sorry you had to go through such a traumatic event and that you feel unsafe, but I’m glad that it hasn’t changed Chopper’s attitude toward other dogs! The finger up the butt thing is a myth unfortunately; hopefully you’ll never be in this situation again, but I’ve heard it’s more effective to get around the attacking dog’s neck and apply pressure as they’ll need to release their bite to breathe. It’s so horrible to have to think about these things at all. Thank you for the update and I hope both of you continue to heal well, physically and emotionally!

@Amy-s17 ай бұрын
this is a good method and available to everyone as we all carry a leash when we walk our dogs. Its important for it to be right behind the ears (where the windpipe is unprotected). As other people have said this may not be as effective for dogs that clamp as hard as pitbull's, however at some point they will pass out and it'll be safe to remove the dog. This also prevents further damage caused by pulling on dogs, regripping, tearing etc.

At the end of the day knowledge lessens anxiety as well as feeling capable and prepared gives you a plan. Where I live, certain dog breeds are banned. Breeds like pitbulls, bulldogs, rottweilers are banned since 2023 so that these type of things dont happen to anyone but it’s not always about the dog breed, it’s about how the owner is training and treating as well. Last year, a golden retriever living near me bit an elderly man while he was on a walk. The man broke his back and has several fractured ribs and the golden retriever had to be put down. So, it’s not always about the breed, but also about how the owner trains the dog as well. I have also wanted a dog for a long time and now i will be getting one soon. We have agreed on rither a doberman or a german shepherd.

You guys are such good pet parents. I don't know many people who work that hard to desensitize their dog and make sure they're socialized right. I used to worry about my old dog being attacked while walking around because of all the off leash dogs roaming around in my neighborhood. I attached pepper spray to my dog's leash and walked with it in my hand so I would be ready. I've also read that having something like a breaker bar/bite release stick is a good idea if your dog is ever attacked by a pit bull because they tend to not want to release when they bite down.

The best thing you can do is try to put it in the past. Dogs don't hold onto things like we do, they move on pretty quick after it's happened. If you keep your anxiety about it around him, it'll make it worse for him in the moment as dogs feed off our energy a lot of the time. They don't hold grudges. I think the best thing you could do for Chopper is to work through your own anxieties about it. Cesar Millan has 2 videos on how to break up a dog fight. They're worth watching.

One of the most helpful things for PTSD is talking about it, telling your story, not trying to suppress or repress your feelings. Just let yourself cry, get mad about what happened, and tell it. You're off to a great start with these videos. Don't judge yourself for having experienced a trauma and needing to heal from it. What you went through is real, it was very scary, your "baby" was harmed, and it's OK to need time and help to move forward.

Here’s a tip! You can learn dog body language. It’s very life saving! You can tell whether a dog is wanting to fight or not. It can also help you to communicate with Chopper too!

I have the same scissors! They don’t pull on the hair at all. As the hair grows in use the thinning shears to keep is even

So sorry what happened to Chopper. I have been around animals all my life and ive seen it all. It basically comes down to how people train their dogs and to be honest a lot of people do not know how to train them properly and socialize their dogs from a very early age, basically from around 3 months old. you are doing the right thing by socializing chopper with all different types of dogs. He will be Ok.

Chopper is so adorable. He reminds me of my childhood dog, who was also a Chow Chow, but Chopper seems so much calmer! Our Chow Chow was extremely protective of her home and family, especially us kids. It's possible he held it together on his walks for you, because you were scared. I say this because I know how sensitive this breed is and how protective they are of their favorite person.

crying after watching you filmed yourself during the walk when you realised Vhopper was actually okay, but you were the one still worried. i can relate to this. like i thought my pet was not ready, it was actually me who was not ready 😢 but glad the playdate went amazing!
