My dog Chopper and I were on a walk when a pitbull attacked him. This is our story of how the attack happened and how Chopper is doing now. I also want to use this to remind pet owners how important it is to train, socialize, have proper gear, and be able to handle their own so they can keep everyone safe outside.

The fact that the dog attacked unprovoked from so far away is an extreme reaction. No way this is the first time this dog was aggressive. I’m so angry at the owner, because that dog will end up being killed itself after it kills someone else’s beloved pet. It all could’ve been prevented by training, proper equipment (that leash is a joke and reactive dogs need muzzles for everyone’s safety), and an owner who can physically handle their dog. I’m so sorry this happened to Chopper and you. Take care of yourselves❤

First of all a lot of pit bull attacks are by rescue dogs. A lot of dog for small amount of money. Chow and pit bull are two of the most aggressive dogs in the world. In order to avoid injury to dogs or people I carry bear spray. No dogs get injured and no vet bills. The other dogs owners get very angry but I tell them to go wash their dogs quickly. Lowers the drama. Here is nothing else you can do about stupid owners but try to avoid hurting people or dogs. I walk a large CO and don't risk killing other dogs (yes even put bulls). Police are mostly interested in making sure rabies are not involved as death rate for people not treated in time is 100%.

I don't agree with you in total. I have a LGB cross und despite training and having a dog sibling, he is agressive towarts other dogs. There is no lack of training from my side, he has his own agenda. He is smart, he acts normal during dog training but once outside without a trainer he is an a55. So he wears a muzzle to keep every dog and himself save.

My childhood dog (who is a 15 year old shit tzu bichon frise mix) in April of 2016 when she was 7 I was walking her and a guy down the street with a big dog (she looked like a bully mix of some kind) WITHOUT a leash His dog bolted at me and my small dog, bit her in the neck and back. I tried to pick her up to avoid the attack when I saw his dog running at us, but my dog ran around my legs and tangled me in her leash. She yelped so loud (I screamed loudly as well), and the guy just pulled his dog back, laughed and said “haha she’s just playing” as I’m nearly in tears I’ll never forget my dog being extremely hurt cuz when I picked her up after untangling my legs, she was shaking and laid her head right into me Luckily she was fine with nothing major, but I still get memories of this day this many years later and I hate it

Same thing happened to my sister. So my sister had a chweenie, (chihuahua & Weiner dog) so he was pretty small. His name was moose. and moose and my sister were walking on the sidewalk until a grey Labrador mix that was 3x bigger than moose, attacked him. She said was so difficult to pull away that dog from moose and the lab finally let go. Moose was rushed to the emergency vet by my sister, they found out his stomach and other critical organs were ripped and bit open. The vet put him into emergency surgery to try and save him. But unfortunately.. he didn’t make it. Moose was at least 12 years old, super sweet and adventurous. He would snuggle every chance he got. Moose would go everywhere with my sister, snowboarding, hiking, camping, paddle boarding, and much more. He would jump for joy every time he got food and whenever someone would make something he would always run to them. He was like a son to my sister. I’m glad chopper is okay and safe. I'm 75 and have a 95lb Catahoula, Jackson. As the owner of a large dog whose breed is known for being aggressive, it's my responsibility to make sure he is properly trained, has the right collar and leash, and is socialized. I have spent hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars training him. He is fully off-leash trained, but I'm still careful around other dogs and owners. Whenever I've run into a problem with another dog, it's always been with an owner who was not willing to put in the work to train and socialize their dog. So glad to see that Chopper is recovering.

As a pet owner, I cannot imagine the trauma of this... If you own a dog, it is your responsibility to train, socialize and care for them. I am 12 and always ask to walk my dog, now I know why I should wait till I am older, we have really never socialized our dog properly, so she is incredibly skiddish and could attack, you never know, as much as she is sweet with us, she might not be with a stranger.
@bakaichigo
@bakaichigo 3 ай бұрын
It's good to note that! If you're worried, there are training manuals and tutorial videos you can find online that help give step-by-step instructions on how to help communicate and work with dogs that have issues like that. Just going for daily walks can help, but I like to do things like clicker-training and such to build up trust bonds. The more the dog trusts you, the more the dog will default to you when startled/scared/anxious (meaning less likely to act out and more likely to run TO you than away). If you're worried about attacks, looking up the ways you can pre-empt or stop an attack, spot an aggressive dog before they get close and looking up what sort of tools you can use to break up a fight or help block an aggressive dog from coming in to attack will help. I usually carry a stick of some sort (one of the firm rubber chewbones thats thin and you can grab solidly also works as long as it has a thin/small end) to use for prying apart jaws, if need be, but I DO NOT RECOMMEND THAT unless you have had some sort of training and/or are an adult with a weight that could rival a larger breed dog. Putting hands near a chomping jaw isn't advice I want to give lol If your dog weighs more than 40lbs and has shown any likelihood for pulling you over or getting aggressive, its best not to walk the dog alone even if you're older than 12, unless you're confident you can handle the dog at their worst. If you haven't done so yet, I do recommend getting in on the walk with your guardian/parent, though! That will help you see what the dog is like on walks and in other environments... Make sure the dog gets at least 1 walk a day for and at least 1 hour of activity/play/training total per day to help with anxiety and behaviour, since some problems come from lack of structured stimulation. :)

I am a dog walker with multiple pit bull clients. This is a list of failures on the part of the owner, first off using a retractable leash on such a powerful dog. All pb’s i walk have a strong leash and either have a harness with an extra handle on it so i can grab them if necessary, or a prong collar (not my favorite, but some dogs unfortunately are only responsive to that). I myself have been attacked by large dogs, and my own dog was mauled as well. You did everything you could in the situation and i am happy to see that chopper is doing well.

I understand people who don't like seeing dogs restrained by prong collars. I used a bit prong collars because harnesses don't work on my CO. anything made of leather or nylon instantly gets bitten in half. Choke collars are more dangerous than pronged and my boy has figured out how to shake them loose and off. The prongs work like a comb to hold them collar on place. Good for Tibetans, chows and Caucasians. I never jerk in the lead. He has broken six of them when he pulls hard. Best to be aware of your surroundings and count on other dogs owners to do something stupid.

You’re a very responsible dog owner. I love pitties but agree, they need excellent training & constant reinforcement to ensure good behaviour. Unfortunately, those that don’t do so, just add to the prejudice that many have about pit bulls. Not blaming people for feeding that way. I would too if my dog were violently attacked. However, it makes me sad that a few badly/not trained dogs can really turn many of a certain breed.

Trainer from American Standard K9 on KZbin says to stop the dog attack, you need to cut off air supply to the attacking dog - headlock or pulling up and not back on the collar. Obviously, you stop when they are no longer a threat and they are perfectly fine once the hold is over. I wish vet offices provided information on how best to stop an attack. It’s really important and could truly save so many dog lives.

@sushibeanss You're extremely naive if you think pit bulls can't be dangerous dogs. Yes, pit bulls can be great dogs, but they can also be extremely dangerous dogs. My sister's pit bull grew up with me and is a fantastic dog, however she can be extremely dangerous if she wants to and has killed a cat in the blink of an eye that got into the back yard. She has never killed another animal before. She was never abused or had a bad life, never under fed. Pit bulls just have a VERY high prey drive and when you pair that with being poorly socialized, you suddenly have a dog that can be very dangerous and unpredictable. Just being good to a dog like a pit bull is not enough. They need persistent, thorough training and socialization.

We were at the bottom of a huge hill and my small toy poodle puppy was doing his business outside of a bush. That’s when this huge off leash stafie started sprinting down the hill as fast as they could. I yelled out “MAMA” in a panic as the stafie picked up my dog’s behind and shook him until (TW) a small lump of his leg fell off. Me too!! 😢I’m a HUGE animal lover and owner…and a rescue volunteer…this happens a lot with a couple small dogs that live down our street who are pretty aggressive and whose owners NEVER put them on leashes or in their yard.on multiple occasions I’ve found them down our driveway in our back yard and had to figure out a way to get them back to their apartment down the street without getting attacked… it’s a big problem for any owner to let their dogs out off leash or unattended around here and honestly it’s never a good idea nor is it safe…even IF it’s a small dog or a dog that walks beside you without a leash.ONE CAN NEVER KNOW OR PREDICT what circumstances might come up and derail you’re ideas or plans…even if the dog is well behaved or calm or friendly… other dogs might not be. Besides that as just proven in this situation,you might not be able to control your pet once they decide to go after something or someone once it’s happening…and if not leashed it can go south very quickly.even if the dog is on a leash if it outweighs you or is bigger than you are, you’re success rate of controlling the situation is very slim if it decides to attack simply on size alone. So please,anyone considering getting a dog, keep in mind that size and strength matter a great deal in those kind of situations and get a pet dog that you can handle easily. Wishing Chopper a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹 🐾✌🏻

Draco, my dog, has been attacked by golden retrievers and huskies the most, there was also a cane corso that used to stalk him and wanted to get all in his face. My dog is a Weimaraner, he's currently 12, and he's always been a really good dog, but all the attacks he's gone through made him stressed around male dogs his size and now he doesn't tolerate any golden retrievers or huskies, and I'm actually pretty annoyed at most of them and dislike most of the owners because a lot of the owners of these breeds don't train their dogs. Especially when it comes to Golden Retrievers, these dogs are very territorial, but they've been marketed as great dogs thanks to all the movies about them, and they are some of the worst socialized dogs I've met. One of my cats was also attacked by a German Shepherd. Attacks are always terrifying, none has been less terrifying than the last, but the more it happens, the more I hear of other people's experiences, the more I dislike people. I think you are doing a disservice to the breed by blaming breed traits on a stereotype. They weren’t simply bred for strength, they were bred to also have a high prey-drive and greater reactivity (being bred from terriers). It’s that terrier tenacity and prey drive, as well as an increased likelihood for anxiety along with that, that make them more inclined to be dog reactive. That is what people wanted the breed to do when creating them, and the unfortunate outcome is a very strong dog that is more likely to cause a lot of damage once aroused by a target. It doesn’t mean ALL pitbulls are like this, but there is a higher chance for things to go very wrong if a person isn’t careful.

If the owner had any idea what those dogs were going to do, they'd have never let a four year old near them. These things happen out of the blue and people who aren't realistic about pitbulls never see it coming.

@@IsariamkiaThat is false, 1 several ex fighting pitts have been successfully rehabilitated, 2 pitbull is an umbrella term that covers several breeds of dogs. And many non pitbull type dogs are mistaken as pitts.

I've experienced similar. A lot of people have. It's horrible. I don't let pitbulls get anywhere near my dogs. Ever. Even if they've been "nice" so far. When you see news stories about people who were killed, the neighbors usually comment something like "I don't know how this happened. He was always a nice dog, we used to pet him." The problem is that the breed was created purely for bloodsports. They were never intended to be pets, or to have jobs like herding or hunting. They were bred only to kill. I just don't let them near my dogs.

This is so not true, maybe your gut is telling you that. Pitbulls aren't bred to only fight and kill. Try looking at pitbulls online and not all of them are bad. This is just pure BS and discrimination against the breed and i'm tired of hearing people saying OMG Pitbulls are only bred to kill and dog fight. Maybe it was true in the 1800-1900s but not now. THIS IS CLEARLY IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERSHIP.

@user-rq2vi3fe4g the only thing pitbulls have historically been bred for is pitfighting and bullbaiting. Pit. Bull. I don't know what makes you say that has changed any amount, judging by the fact that pitbulls have killed 10x the amount of the next highest breed involved in fatal attacks.
@lilisixxx
@lilisixxx 4 ай бұрын
I think you lack knowledge about pitbull. It's not because they were created for dogfights that they are all monsters. The breed is not the problem. It's the owners who dont train and educate them well. Staffie, Amstaff, pitbull, Doberman etc etc are loving dogs. They are family dogs if they are in a good and healthy environnement. Unfortunately you only remember bad stuff about them. There are 1000 happy families with loving, calm and easy going pitbull for 1 bad specimen. And FYI, small dogs are way much agressive and have more behavior issues than pitbull. Thing is : their bites can't kill...
@nonamel6377
@nonamel6377 4 ай бұрын
@lilisixxx except for the countless instances in which those loving family dogs flip and maul someone. It's willful ignorance to ignore the fact that dog breeds were absolutely bred with purpose. Hunting dogs still know how to hunt. Retrievers still retrieve. Pointers still point. Bloodsport breeds have not forgotten their natural instincts to fight. No matter what you do that you think you have, you cannot remove the natural instincts from an animal purposefully bred into them.
@StellaWaldvogel
@StellaWaldvogel 4 ай бұрын
@@lilisixxx And pitbull bites can and do kill. Other dogs tend to simply bite. Pitbulls maim, scalp, dismember, and kill. They account for the vast majority of fatal dog attacks. From 2005 to 2019, pit bulls killed 346 Americans, a rate over 6.5 times higher than the next closest breed, rottweilers, with 51 deaths. I have never had to "train" any of my dogs not to maim or kill people. But my dogs are not pitbulls. And training doesn't eradicate genetics. You can teach a barky dog the "quiet" command, but they still have a strong tendency to bark. As for the "1000 happy families with loving, calm and easy going pitbulls", they will still kill cats and other dogs given the opportunity. They'll tear through doors or jump through closed windows to attack an animal they see outside. They'll pull cars apart trying to get at some poor cat hiding in the motor. Plus there is always a strong possibility they will become human aggressive with little or no warning. No thanks.

I own a reactive pit mix and I am truly sorry that this was your experience. And you are right hun it is the absolute bare minimum to be able to handle our dogs as owners. It is our responsibility for the dog’s safety and others as soon as we bring home a puppy. It doesn’t matter the breed you are responsible for your dog. At 10 months old my boy was attacked by a shepherd mix, a yellow lab and an Australian shepherd. The first dog took his puppy hood and forever changed him. I want you to know that there are owners out there that actually care for their dogs properly and for others safety. I’m glad your pup is ok and in recovery, please keep an eye on his body language, his confidence and how he acts toward others. Bring him at round safe dogs when he is ready.♥️

The same thing happened to me. Somebody was walking a Pitbull on a retractable leash. and the dog got off of the leash and went for one of my cats and killed it. You are super lucky your dog survived. I also had another friend who's dog was attacked by a Pitbull really bad. Thank god the dog survived. But it really goes to show that it's the owners fault for not knowing how to keep control of the dog.

I’m quite new to your channel. I cried during the entire story. I’m so sorry that happened to you and your cute doggie. My older husky was attacked by a young very big boxer. He got a hold of her belly and just started ripping her to pieces. Four surgeries, other appointments, and over $2500 later our beautiful Mia was starting to heal. I don’t blame the boxer but I do blame the owner. His dog wasn’t even on a leash. Our dog was never the same. I really hope that your little cutie heals both mentally and physically. You are a great pet mama. I wish you well and I hope that all of you stay happy, healthy and safe. Much love from Colorado ❤😊

This exaxt same thing happened to me.😢 I was nine years old. I was about 100 feet away from my house when a unleashed German Shepard came running at me and my dog. It started attacking my dog, I was unharmed but he got a horrible bite would on his neck. It was a terrifying experience for me, and my family. Please keep your dogs leased and take responsibility for their actions, unlike the owners of the dog that attacked my poor puppy.

I feel u my chihuahua last year got attacked at my old house by two aggressive pitbulls and she is 8 years old and a small dog so like she could not defend herself I know how it’s feels too have a dog attack ur dog u have had for years and I did not stop crying g and there was another time when we left her outside for a few hours it was like 9:00 and we found hunched up and like whimpering and we brought her inside and she could not straighten her back it was to the point where she could not walk and she peed herself on the floor this is an improvement of how I shared my story and I feel that people should train there dogs on command not out of no where

As a momma of a Pittie (the sweetest girl you can ever meet), I am so so sorry you and Chopper went through this. I am a firm believer that ALL dogs regardless of breed should be trained. As an owner, it is your responsibility to have control of your dog at all times. This was clearly a bad dog owner and I’m sorry that your fam suffered for their shortcomings.

This!!! I grew up with a dog aggressive St. Bernard. We walked her with a choke collar because of it and kept the leash short. The only times it was an issue is when off leash tiny dogs would charge her and make her feel threatened. Even if your dog is good with other dogs please keep it on a leash for its own safety!!!!

I totally agree! I don't have a dog, but my grandma's chihuahua bit me very slightly when I was 3. I'd never got bitten by an aggressive dog or anything like that. But my 3 year old self didn't understand that it was just a aggressive nibble to teach me a lesson. I definitely learned that day 😅 but I agree that if your dog is aggressive, NOMATTER WHAT BREED IT IS, 1. Always have it on a short leash with a mussel. 2. TRAIN YOUR DOGS FOLKS

Dogs and cats can sense fear, anger, sadness, and a lot more some can even smell sicknesses and they will usually try to comfort you they will stay near you and just make sure you are ok. Like one time my dogs sister bit me on the face and when I saw my dog sometimes I would get scared, but he was just trying to stay near me and he could see the injury and just wimper and stay calm. Dogs and cats really are incredible and so kind, but some pity’s are mistreated and they don’t get along with dogs but a LOT are so nice and kind. Please if anyone reading this gets a dog or a cat please treat him/her kindly and if they have a like something from their past that may make them bad with other dogs then be cautious of your surroundings and if like they don’t get along well with other animals then on walks and stuff make them wear the correct stuff, something that you could have a good grip with. And if you don’t have a good grip or if your adopting a dog make sure they will be easy for you to handle or something like this will happen. I hope y’all have an incredible day 😊😊😊(Sorry about it being so long)

What a real nightmare. That’s why I rarely take my dogs for a walk and when I do and I see big dogs I immediately pick them up no matter how harmless the other dogs look because I don’t know if the other owners are responsible and able to restart their dogs if needed.

It's so terrifying and jolting when this happens to our companions....I've had it happen several times, even when owners tell me that their dogs are fine off leash, but won't come back when they're called. I started watching the video but it brought back too many sensitive memories, so I'll have to try another day. Wishing your baby a swift and full recovery (both physically and emotionally).
