I dont know who Drew is, but I got recommended this video and just watched it (probably because Im from Brazil). I'm sorry this happened to you, I can't imagine how stressful it was and still is, and don't beat yourself up for "making mistakes" or whatever it is people that say "brazil is dangerous" constantly tell you, saying "don't have your phone out", etc... It's just not that easy. Even I have problems remembering this when Im walking outside on a daily basis. The biggest cities in Brazil are usually the worst ones for this stuff, just because of the sheer volume of people and tourists. I don't have any recommendations or anything, I can sit here and say "you should've had someone with you" or any of the thousand other things people will want to say, but the fact of the matter is this sucks ass and it shouldn't have happened, you seem like a good guy and I'm just glad you're safe, hope you can sort out all your accounts and stuff without any complications soon, don't let this impact your will to explore the world and enjoy your travels!

A friendly tip that I used that a friend of mine used to when we went to Brazil and Colombia, buy a phone from the country, you can pre-purchase in many websites , and only install the bare minimum necessary like uber , or maps without any other mayor accounts or sensitive information , the other phone never leaves your room or your bag or even the safe case on your hotel room, that saved my friend one time in Colombia when we was robbed.

being robbed and especially experiencing cases of stolen identity can be really traumatic. Consider seeing a psychologist about it. It might sound stupid but i can assure you that what you experienced is actually a big deal and can having lasting psychological effects. Having somebody to help step you through the process mentally could really help.

Just be prepared. You will be safe almost everywhere in Europe. But it doesn't mean that there at not places where you should absolutely not go. Some neighborhoods in London are no gos, some towns East and North of Paris are no gos. Usually, every big city has hoods (except maybe in the very richest countries with little immigration, like Denmark or Switzerland). I love my continent, but we have poor people with nothing to lose, migrants and drug dealers too. It's just life. Just don't walk around randomly and aboid that tiny 1% of bad spots in Europe.

I am really sorry this has happened to you and I am glad you are safe. As a Brazilian I always tell everyone that asks me about Brazil to NOT go there. It is NOT a safe place to be--specially for tourists. When there I have to be constantly aware of my belongings and surroundings, and still I have been robbed multiple times(with guns). It is a beautiful country but the risk is not worth it. For anyone reading this that is planning to go there, don't.

Folks need to realize stats are deceptive, there could be other forms of crime hidden or not counted(Japan/india harrasment etc). You always need to be on guard. Countries like USA have "responsive" police but they are also prone for corruption. Anyway gl.

Man, I probably live somewhere else and I'm not aware then. I'm 38 yo, born in Brazil, never left the country, but traveled to lots of places here, and I really believe it's not that bad. I don't live in a major city tho, even though it's close to São Paulo and I go there frequently, but it probably helps me feeling safe. Thing is, you need to avoid some times and places really. And Praça da Sé (where midbeast was), is one of those places. But I would definitely tell foreigners to visit Brazil. There are many awesome places here. You really don't need to go to São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro to have a good time.

I was born and raised in São Paulo and it's safe to say you're not an idiot, Drew. You were victim to a dangerous neighborhood (specially the streets surrounding that cathedral) and, if anything, I'm glad all they got was your phone and you didn't get physically injured or kidnapped. And yes: your experience with the police is common. Basically, there are worst situations going on at all times and they don't have the resources to solve smaller cases such as cellphone robberies. So they choose to ignore these cases, which should say a lot about our country. We brazilians learn how to act in public, which places to avoid at specific times of the day and what red flags should get us the fuck out of there. I'm sorry that was your experience and can't blame you for not wanting to come back. I just wish a local would have given you the tour you deserved and shown you a better side of our culture. But would you let a random tourist go for a walk alone in Compton ? And Compton is not the only hood. There is such a thing as no go zones in LA for tourists. There are places and times to avoid. It's just what it is. So no, it's not as easy as "LA is bad" but LA can become a very bad trip if you don't arm yourself with the necessary knowledge to make it a good one.

Brazilian here, the places he went to are places that not even people from Brazil go that much, the old part (old center) of São Paulo is extremely dangerous and unsafe, there's an unreal amount of homeless people it just looks like a scene from The Walking Dead, it is to this day my worst experience in my own country or any country I've been to, I felt like I could get robbed or something at any time. Lesson for anyone coming to Brazil or visiting São Paulo, don't go to the old part of the city, the tourism and stuff may be there but the insane risks you take makes it not worth it.

It doesn't. I've been living in Brazil for 25 years, worked until 2 am as a delivery driver 6 days a week for a long time and never got robbed. If you go to the most dangerous places in the most dangerous cities, then you'll surely get robbed. I don't even live in the state of São Paulo and i know very well that the cathedral area is dangerous. Same goes with Lapa neighbourhood in Rio. I just don't go to those places. It is a mistake to synthetize a country the size of Europe with many ethnic groups by 3 neighbourhoods in 2 cities. Specially considering that it has 5570 cities, some of whom have the size of countries. If you disagree, then we can also consider the whole Europe dangerous, because you might get stabbed in Birmingham. But that's very short sighted.

I do hope you come back some day, even though I think it's probably not going to happen, but if you do, maybe going somewhere like Brasília can be safer. São Paulo and Rio de janeiro are the most popular and biggest cities that we have, but they are really the most dangerous of them all. I find this very upsetting since we don't have much people that come here to do what you came to do, and I always say to my friends that streamers should come here not only to play at the region but to know our country that is beautiful, with a lot of nice places to visit and food to eat, but we do have that problem of security in most cities. As a brazilian, i'm completely sad that you had that experience here in our country. Unfortunately, i believe that some people that were around you on Liquid's facility might have left some information out of your sight. São Paulo's downtown is one of the most dangerous places in the city to be wandering around on weekends, specially alone as you said you were. The city has amazing social life and experiences to live on, but really almost none of them are downtown, and i believe that the folks on Liquid's facility should've warned you about it. Not trying to put blame on someone, of course urban violence is a gigantic problem here, but thing is that is already common sense in São Paulo that you should never walk downtown alone, ever. Anyway, glad you're fine besides all that happened, and hope that someday you get to live a better experience here in Brazil.

When going anywhere you gotta research before, sadly he went in blind and happened to stumble with the country's bad side. I've lived in the very place he said he went to in this video, there's nothing there worth a tourist's visit. Bunch of homeless ppl, beggars and robbers there.
