Regarding uplifting content: I think there is a reason why the NASF focused on positive content about Pakistan. If you look at the content coming out of Pakistan that is being recognised in the West, you'd see that it's mostly extremely negative. Those of us living abroad are more familiar with this stereotyping. In fact I went to an event by a Pakistani writer whose new book was being launched and when I asked him why does every novel coming out of Pakistan has to mention 'terrorism', he told us that the portion about terrorism in his book was initially very small but the publisher insisted that the author made it a focal point of the story. When you are faced with realities like that, somebody HAS to carry the flag for a Pakistan that is more than terrorism, more than extremism. We, outside the country, need to see more positive content and we need for the foreigners around us to see that alternative beautiful side of our country too. So please dont criticise this initiative. I think when these kids go out to study filmmaking, they will go on to make diverse content including critical ones so let the initial step be of positivity.

Being an OPs I totally agree with you.I think the conversation regarding NASF is very superficial .Our critics (in general, nothing personal) didn’t get what this initiative is all about.

Well Amna -my colleagues relate Pakistan with an image of a women who suffered acid burns. If a positive image of Pakistan was portrayed through documentaries and when they would have complemented me and would have looked at me with admiration that l am Pakistani , you can imagine how elated I would have felt. No one is saying don’t talk about negativity but then show it constructively and if your audience is international then why not share something uplifting or positive about your country. You can also show negativity in a positive manner. Just have to be creative.

IK didn’t “demoralize “ anyone , it was a suggestion to make original content because that’ll make our industry.e.g none of my Indian friends watch pak movies but all of them discuss /watch pak dramas. Also going by Amina/Hassan’s logic it should be fine to show that specific kotha culture (in KAM) which doesn’t exist anymore.so don’t object on that either.

Aamna I was very disappointed seeing you say that 'hamari aur india k zubaan aur culture aik hai' on national TV. Why are you all so hell bent on denying the two nation theory just for your 'cultural exchange'. No Amna! Urdu and Hindi are not same. And No! our culture is not the item numbers or whatever the stuff happens in our films now-a-days. Our culture is Balochi culture, Gilgit's culture, KPK's culture, Punjab's Culture, Sindh's culture, Kashmir's culture. Saying that we have same culture and language is disrespectful to all the people who left everything behind, who sacrificed their and their loved ones' lives during partition because they knew that our culture and language is not same. Please stop all of this bs. Two Nation Theory is the ideological basis of the country you are living in!

We have same culture, it is religion that separates us, which is a big deal. She spoke the truth. And the reason why she spoke the truth is because we’re quite literally reverted Muslims from Hindus. Our weddings are literally inspired by Hindus. Bride wear red like Hindu brides, we do rasams like mehndi, and what not that Hindus do. We have similar cuisine, dress style, looks, and what not. However, Punjab and Sindhi culture which make up a majority of Pakistanis is similar to India as comparison to KPK (where I belong) which is basically Afghanistani culture and Balochistan which barely makeups our population and share more with Omani Arabs and Iranians than the rest of Pakistan :) keep denying though!

It doesn't suit you. You are also a drama critic and the PM can give his suggestion too. He didn't demoralize anyone. Hollywood and bollywood are biggest industries but it doesn't mean that they are appropriate for us to adapt it. Those industries are suitable for their society. Another good justification of insisting on making positive films is that those inside the country have suffered a lot already and in fact daily life in Pakistan itself is a struggle for most. People in Peshawar especially have seen their loved ones including children being bombed to pieces. In a climate like that, the cultural stuff, the arts, the entertainment, the colourful outfits, the amazing craftsmanship gets overshadowed. Yes, no content must be banned but to encourage young people to focus on the positive aspects of Pakistan is important. In fact, our very identity is in crises at the moment as there is hardly anything for young people to be proud of. Even cricket isn't at a point where it'd unite everyone into a national identity. So think of these things...

@Mangakuray
@Mangakuray 3 жыл бұрын
@@sewaligoswami781 You don't because you haven't witnessed bombs falling and waking up with nightmares of your parents dying as a result. You also dont understand because there is no critical media in India, with those who disagree or point out the myriad of issues plaguing india especially when it comes to controversial issues, quieted and shut down either by the government or by an angry mob of internet vigilantes calling them 'traitors' 'unpatriotic'. Our media has historically been extremely critical and honest, even during times of Marshall law, clever people would find ways of raising the issues that needed to be raised. Watch Anwar Maqsood's shows during Zia's time as an example of critical thinking by a state controlled tv channel. You also dont understand because you are raised to think that being a patriot means never to say anything negative about your country. Case in point - India's insistence on not calling the Indian variant of covid 'Indian' :)

@@Mangakuray how smartly you deflected my sincere question and somehow made this all about India bashing. Well now I get a sense of why y'all have this identity crisis. That too from the very dawn of Pakistan. And bombings have nothing to do with having identity crisis. Do you think Syrians and Iraqis have this same identity crisis? Not at all. I feel it's the Pakistani narrative from the very beginning that fueled this crisis.

I do agree with the PM's observation regarding Bollywood though. We were together with India and we do share some cultural aspects but I think what the PM is referring to is the kind of things like items songs seeping into our films, of the rape scenes in every bollywood film in the 80s which is now being copied by our TV - things that destroyed their culture and is now destroying ours. We had such a great history of TV and music but now we look at indian tv and copy that stuff. Even in reporting, I see reporters repeating one thing over and over and sensationalising stuff like I used to see on indian news channels. This needs to stop.

About Sharmeen Obaid, have you people followed Rukhsana's story who was the main subject of her film, how she cheated her and used her and never looked behind. Sharmeen's latest documentary was on how shia people are marginalized and it was about a band who were interviewed about the discrimination they faced because they were shia. That is ridiculous as everybody knows that shia are not minority, they are Muslims and more than half of the media industry is shia.

So Hassan you are going to judge whole Pakistan based on Netflix? How many people in Pakistan use Netflix? I got a subscription if Netflix for 300 per month via fb group and the next month i didn't have the money to pay for it. I have the same question regarding social media as well. Only half of pakistan have phones and majority of them have feature phones who doesn't run these social apps. Netflix is nothing and who knows if Netflix does it deliberately. For 1 month which i used it would suggest me to watch Sex education. I only got subscription to watch Dark primarily but then i watched Lucifer too.

You know what I absolutely hate, is when people say, “We share similar values, culture and traditions like that of India”. No Hassan. No. We don’t. Saying this defies the whole concept getting us Pakistan. We got Pakistan BECAUSE we have different cultures and values from them. What is the obsession with always saying that we share culture and values with them? If we follow any culture or value which is inspired by India, then WE are at wrong. But at the same time, I think this would be the first batch of this initiative and since the PM is focusing more on tourism, this uplifting content resonates well with this particular vision. Talking about religion, is the mazaar cuture that is being promoted so much, Islamic? I feel it is totally influenced by Hindu temple culture. Amna rightly said that in dramas a masjid has been replaced by the mazaar and an aalim by the peer. This, sadly is not limited to dramas only. This is what our society is following from top, (the PM , his wife, a peerni, prostrating at graves and mazaars, wearing amulets), to the illiterate in the rural area. Not to forget our our foreign minister, another modern peer who makes his mureeds kiss his one hand while he takes money from them, through the other. All ulema and everyone is tight lipped. Then we have women who are beaten at homes, in the open, on roads, but still there is silence. Instead, women are blamed for tempting men to harass them, otherwise men are saints. I don’t want to question anyone’s belief, but it seems to me as if I am living in the pre Islamic time when women were considered a source of evil and sin and used for reproduction only. This is combined with the era of Munafiqeen who were Muslims only outwardly for the community.

I completely agree with Prime Minister Imran Khan’s thoughts on Pakistani film industry copying bollywood and hollywood. He was stating facts. We need to stop showing vulgarity and items numbers etc - just because the public like it doesn’t mean it needs to be shown Aamna. Sex isn’t the only wrong thing in films that can be shown it isn’t the case in Pak but there are other problems - the revealing clothes which ARE NOT PAKISTANI CULTURE (for Amna’s info) and also the vulgarity of item numbers and dancing. Pakistani films should focus on pak culture of all provinces and also show case Pak’s beauty!! Also Amna mentioning those films which were excellent films, yes Amna but they are a minority against majority of films!!

Pakistan has had item numbers, dancing, all part of its film industry since 1947, it’s creation. I remember nisho dancing in item song in belly revealing and backless attire back in 1970s in agar tum miljao. Punjabi cinema in 1990s was far more vulgar than anything done now in their dance moves, lyrics, and clothing. Why only target the current crop of filmmakers? They’re not doing anything which wasn’t or hadn’t been done before. Vulgarity has creeped in with advent of social media and technology boom.

What's the PM's and our people's obsession with Ertugrul? We don't realise that it is not our history, our identity. It's Turkish history and they are rightly proud of it. Why can't we make films on our historic figures? The people of Pakistan love to identify with every muslim country and consider their culture as their own. Go out and you will see that no muslim country cares anything about Pakistan. Please start being proud of our own identity and history, which isn't just muslim. For example, look at the ancient civilisations like Moenjo Daro, Harrapa, and the very early Buddhist monasteries located in our country. Give a thought to that too..that is also us.

Our deen is our identity..Artughral may not be a Pakistani or an Indian character but he was a devout Muslim who with a handful of Muslim tribesmen overcame difficult times and corrupt enemies within and without their tribe. Rest is history. PM is working on tourism sites of old civilizations for the national and international lovers of history. Sadly, Pakistan since its inception has seen more Villians than heroes. I think to compete at a foreign level the film-makers have to honestly and courageously promote the real face of Islam, based on the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (saw). A movie about the real portrayal of the Prophet (saw's) life and his message is critical in dealing with Islamophobia. The message of Islam should be taught through syllabus as well as tv dramas and movies. A social awareness program on Islamic etiquette and protocol is imperative to teach both, parents and children. Characters like Sharmeen Obaid, must be exposed to counter-act the web of lies spun by them. Make a story of how Shireen Obaid cheated Rukhsana and expose her agenda! Extremes should not be practiced in any shape or form and the content of talk-shows, dramas and movies should not cross the line of decency. Be original in breaking the myths of one-sided social, political and religious lies spread by the political agendists and/or opportunists! I believe that the brilliant actors, writers, producers and directors of Pakistan have great potential to expose and express the issues at hand in a positive neutral tone.
