Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on KZbin. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

I feel as though we will look back years from now on how airlines would make people get out of their wheelchairs to board a plane and be shocked as to how that even happened.
@unapologeticallyamy9031
@unapologeticallyamy9031 3 жыл бұрын
It seems absurd to me that there isn’t better access to bring wheelchairs on a plane. Even our county buses have a way to secure the biggest chairs. I wonder if there’s a technical reason, like if it’s unsafe to have a wide door, something that I don’t understand because I still don’t grasp how planes stay in the air 🤣
@tyffaneelavely8087
@tyffaneelavely8087 3 жыл бұрын
I am shocked now. I hope it doesn't take years. They need to fix this asap. People in wheelchairs should not be put thru that. I of course don't blame the employees. It's the rules and regulations of the airlines that need to change. I pray it does. Some people would be totally screwed if their wheelchair got broken, because some don't have the funds to get a new one right away. I hope the airline compensated them for the chair, since they broke it. Shane's chairs are like $500+

I agree. I don't know why the population think that wheelchairs are like shoes and that the average person can fit into the average wheelchair. There is no such thing as an average wheelchair or wheelchair user. As you know as an OT, every single component of a wheelchair is designed specifically to suit each individual need of a person. One can't just jump into another chair if even something as seemingly insignificant as the height of a wheelchair back is out by a couple of centimetres.

It would be nice indeed (I am a wheelchair user). Sadly, it will likely never happen. Airplanes are fundamentally different from trains and buses (which have done this by the way). The passenger cabin is designed for maximum survival during an extremely high impact event. Unfortunately, there are no restraints made that would hold a wheelchair and its occupant during such an event (crash). Having a 500 pound wheelchair+occupant hurtling through the air after a crash is the nightmare scenario they are trying to avoid.

Ok, you give me hope on several levels. After 5yr journey trying to figure why I have progressive weakness, crushing fatigue, loss of balance and getting 2 rare disease diagnosis I though no one could ever care about me... did a good job of pushing everyone away. My identity was strong, active,going everywhere til 58 it started rapidly crumbling,felt like I had failed when docs dorked around. When needed bipap and oxygen at night , wheelchair for any distance and was told expect progression to continue I resolved myself to never traveling again. How could I ? Seeing you tells me even if not likely is remotely possible. Occurs to me they need to have POD system to ship WC in, could put all associated luggage in with chair, lock it up, roll it on and off. I usually think outside the box but this time think the box is the key. Glad mom was able to help.

Back in 1991, Ed Roberts, (1939-1995) the founder of Independent Living and the World Institute on Disability (1983), the first global disability rights organization he tried flying in to Pierre, SD the state capital he was the speaker for a Parent Advocacy training I attended. Unfortunately there was no wheelchair access at that time so he had to fly into Rapid City than have a three hour ride to the capital. This was before the American Disability Act became law. Ed Roberts lived a great life. I would highly recommend doing a search online to learn more about his accomplishments and why living with a disABILITY is so much easier today thanks to people like Ed Roberts! We often forget that before 1974 (only 47 years ago) children living with a disABILITY DIDN’T HAVE THE RIGHT TO RECEIVE PUBLIC EDUCATION!

Shane is the funniest person I swear. His personality is infectious. Both of you guys are awesome, and your personalities compliment one another's so well. I'm sure I don't have to tell you that. ;) Thanks for taking us on your trip! They really need to have better rules in place about wheelchairs. As a person not in a wheelchair, I am conscious about wheelchair, and other disability access, but never have I fully looked into it. Although the world (well parts of it, I can really only speak for the U.S) has gotten a lot better than it used to be, it's still a far cry form where it NEEDS to be. There are so many disabled people in our world, so I don't understand why it isn't just built with EVERYONE in mind. Not just able-bodied people. I have massive issues with my back, and I can't walk without support at least every few steps, so I understand in a way. I feel like ramps & railings (among other things) should be a thing that is in the plans for all future buildings. Whether my back gets fixed or not, has nothing to do with my stance on this. Even if I was fully able-bodied, I would feel just as strongly. No one should have to struggle to navigate thru towns, and cities, when it can 100% be avoided. Sorry for the rant. I have a tendency to do that about things I get passionate about. I wish I even knew where to start to try to make even a small change about accessibility for disabled people better. If anyone read this, thank you lol.

My hubby and I just traveled, too. We made a 4 day trip, flying Delta, to Wisconsin from Panama City. It WAS so tiring! Maybe because we're out of practice? P.S. I've never been to that hotel, but the Rosen Shingle Creek Orlando is the best ever.

At 2:16 hannah is glowing she's absolutely stunning all the time but i noticed it as soon as i saw her and her smile could light up a room. Happy to hear all went well with the speech and i must say that food looked delicious. Also happy you all had a safe flight home. And big round of applause to Liz for helping on the trips like she does. I've said it before and I'll say it again Everyone needs a liz in their life. Even though my father left when i was 4 yrs old i wish all the dads out there a happy fathers day. Have a wonderful weekend everyone. Much love and hugs to you all.
