Many people miss the point of movies like these. These movies aren't about "who deserved this", or big fairytale endings, the movie is trying to point out what actually be happening to young girls like Precious out here. These young girls are molested by family friends and even their own family members, but somehow all of the heat ends up falling back on them. The movie also shows how the other family members approach and handle the situation, unfortunately. I bet we all can agree that this movie aged well considering the fact that right now there is this "victim blaming" trend where many people who do molest children are getting off the hook and the children have to face not only the trauma but the blame.

*SPOILERS FOR 'The Kid' (Abdul's story/what happens next)* I prefer to watch this movie and completely ignore any continuation, for Precious's story. But if your curious to what happens to Precious, she does get her education(enrolls in college), has a job....but only to die of AIDS when Abdul is nine. This is when it becomes a true nightmare as he ends up in foster care, gets horrifically raped and beaten (put into the hospital for 3 weeks) by another foster kid. Then he goes to a Catholic orphanage where, he then becomes a rapist to the younger kids, while also getting sexual abused by a priest. He becomes a dancer (his dream) while also having an inappropriate relationship with a lover that we presume is also way older him (he's still underage). There is no happy ending,. And it's so heartbreaking to see him become just like his father, a rapist and abuser.

It's also her coping mechanism. I used to fantasize a lot as a kid in order to basically remove myself from reality: I can still p much do it. So it's like taking the disassociation (which for people like Precious was basically constant) and using it for comfort rather than checking out and having flashbacks. Disassociation is v hard to depict on screen since it has a lot of modes. Main way I realized it kept happening to me was looking in the mirror and not recognizing myself and having to account for reality around me; literally just thought I was "spacy" until serious mental illness sprang up.

Ikr? Just the ending you should know she's going to die, at that time in the 80's anti retroviral drugs were not widely available. But to give your family members a reality check give them all a copy of the sequel to the book, let them know how shitty things ended up going.
@goeienacht3 жыл бұрын
@WhatJoshHasToSay no one is saying it isn’t touching on real issues, that’s what makes channels like “soft white underbelly” successful. It just translated oddly in this film is all. Especially when you compare it to other films tackling dark subjects, something about this was redundant and like “okay, so we’re watching this obese, abused, addicted teenager live through hell…and her life is gonna get worse. Now what?” There are also movies that have that same effect yet they’re written, edited, and shot beautifully. It’s just not that good of a movie in general. Take from it what you will but the fact that people were, as I said, trying to make it more than it was is ridiculous. Maybe giving the characters more dimension than “good guy, bad guy” would have been cool too but whatever. Like I said, Lifetime movie shit. Tyler Perry logic shit.
@Oblivisci........3 жыл бұрын
@@goeienachtSeriously though most of the people watching stuff like Soft White Underbelly arent like the people they interview. I grew up with serious violence and ended up an addict. Im clean and happy now, but when I tried to watch that stuff I stopped pretty quick. Its not fun to see your past in every face that has suffered some serious problems. The only people I know that try and .make that life sound fun and adventurous were the rich white kids that could always call mom and dad. And as a poor white kid that pretty much knew I was going to die of an overdose or be shot or stabbed to death I absolutely hate that while he brings attention to these issues almost no one that watches is watching for honest intentions.
