@@TrailRecon Most definitely enjoyed! Although there is one overland adventure that you had uploaded 2 years ago, that I have a hard time getting over the MOST incredible shots you took...And that's the Baja overland adventure! I think I have watched that at least 30 times. Thinking about the views from that first camp site(That's not open to public), leaves me absolutely speechless! It would be amazing too see a Baja overland 2020 adventure vid, but Gladiator style. Take it easy Brad!

Hey Brad, I love your videos very informative. I’m a first time Jeep owner I have only had my truck since March. As I start my journey modifying my JK I’ve found your videos very helpful. I started slow rock rails, rims and tires, Alpine nav system, next a lift. I will keep watching for all your new adventures.

SouthWest Colorado has so much to see and do. Mesa Verde, Steam locomotive ride in Durango/Silverton, and scenery in every direction. and off-road heaven. Most of my time has been spent burning up the paved roads there on my motorcycle, but your vids are getting me pumped for a go at those trails off the pavement!

Brad, Found your videos a little while ago and I love them. Your Jeep is a perfect example of a overland vehicle that does not need to be sky high in the air to be capable off road. Your Jeep sits low but can still flex with the best. If / When I built an overland vehicle (most likely a Jeep Jk) that is how I want mine to be.

Just to anyone wondering about doing trails like this, I’ve done top of the world, hells revenge,Ophir pass, Imogene, and Black bear in a completely stock 84 Jeep cj7 with open differential and no lift. It can be done you just have to take your time, and know your rig very well. Hopefully this helps some people who want to do this.

I like the format of this video esp because you are talking about Ouray and Moab.... we have been going each fall in Sept (cooler in Moab and sometimes snow in Co) for the past 8 yrs. All the trails you did we have dont plus some others with the exception of Black Bear. Maybe some day.... This year we were in our new JLU and did Poison Spider for the first time. Next year again for sure after I get a small lift and larger tires. Thanks again for all your great video’s about the trip. I really have enjoyed them

Colorado is beautiful! Definitely a camping/hiking/fishing/off-roading destination. A guy from my hometown runs a Jeep rental business in Salida. We've always stuck to central Colorado, but a few years ago, we decided to visit Gunnison. We then took the back way to Buena Vista by going past Taylor Reservoir, over Cottonwood Pass, and into our final destination. It's decently maintained gravel, but there are some decent switchbacks. The Grand Cherokee handled it jyst fine. 😂

So I,m listening but find myself trying to focus on what your doing with the switch pod install. I don't multitask well HA. I am anxious for the follow up. I am running the Apollointech 6 switch pod and have 1 open switch position currently reserved for on board air when I decide on my compressor set up. I anticipate the need for more capability down the road so you have my attention. Love the channel man PEACE

Wow, I did almost the same trip as you but 1 month earlier. We left Oklahoma in early July and went to Moab and Colorado as well. We ran Moab Rim, then Hells revenge(I skipped hells gate as well, but went up Escalator), fins and things, But on we did Poison spider we continued into Golden spike and then Gold bar rim, making that a long EPIC day. As far as Colorado, we stayed in the southwest corner and ran Ophir pass and Imogene pass. I also spend a day playing on the mountain bike trails in Telluride. Its was a Great trip, but as you stated, Camping in Moab in the summer was HOT.

you mentioned you want to do some more primitive camping.. One of my favorite places to camp in Moab is out a road just north of Canyon Lands Road. BLM 378. This road is all BLM land and has some amazing places to camp along it and its all FREE. 1.8 miles north of the 313 on 191 the road takes off to the East. I camp out there every time I go to Moab.

Hi Brad. You do a really nice job in your videos. I just inherited a 2000 xj with 116k. It was my wife's fathers, at 86 he decided not to renew his license. I'm really excited about building a trail/adventure vehicle. I've been following your xj build and have always liked these little jeeps. I'm finding It a challenge to conservatively decide what changes to make to the xj. It will be a daily driver so street manners are a serious consideration. Like yours I'm thinking a 4" short arm with new full pack rear leafs and 32" KO's. Not sure about bumpers, most are too heavy for my purpose, though I would like a winch up front. And I think re gearing to compensate for the oversized tires and Eaton True Tracs front and rear will get me where I want to go. The rig is super clean with no body damage or rust and with the low miles will provide years of enjoyment. Thanks for the inspiration and keep up the good work. Chris Conley

If you can spend ( over a year or two) about 4grand on your xj , it will do anything, and I mean anything you ask it to do. A 4 inch lift, 33’s locker in rear new shocks , and most of all ...... time.! Don’t hurry the build, enjoy the build. It will make the journey well worth it! Remember, JEEPS are built , not bought. Buy building it , it will build you. And don’t forget to take grandpa out for a drive .

I too am on 37s and 4.10s and it’s a hard decision on 4.88 and 5.13 but I’m going to go 4.88 because I have to run 33s sometimes and that’s the lowest gears that’s is good on the motor on highway for 33s.

I’m running 37’s and 5.13’s in my 2014 with auto trans. Im turning about 3k RPM AT 70 mph. Hills are fine but I geared it with the intention of going to 40’s. If you’re going to stick with 37’s. I recommend 4.88’s. Just a little bit better highway manners.

What gear did you have prior to 5:13 ? I like your advice . I'm spinning 1700rpms with 4:10s @70mph.....4:88 would put me around 24-2500 rpm which would be ideal personally.
@casey3057

Joshua Cripe I was running 4.10 as well and with the 37’s it was just too much. The 5.13’s are too much for 37’s but again, once these wear out I’ll go 40’s being that’s what I initially feared it for.

Your gearing question is easy. Since you don't have a Rubicon transfer case, you carry a lot of weight , have a rooftop tent, and run 37's, go with 5:13 gears. I ran 4:88's on my '13 Rubicon 2 door with auto trans and 35's and it was great in 4 wheel low and perfect on the highway. So, with your 37's I'd expect similar results. If you had a Rubicon transfer case I'd say 4:88's would work, but you'd be missing out on the added pep. I now have an '18 Rubicon auto on 37's that will get UD60's this winter. I'll be running 5:13's in those axles.
@TrailRecon
@TrailRecon 5 жыл бұрын
I have a Rubicon (just don't have the decals on the hood). My Jeep is my daily driver and mpg is more important than a little added pep. UD60's will be REALLY nice!
@ethanturner5567
@ethanturner5567 5 жыл бұрын
@@TrailRecon, do you drive a lot of freeway miles at sustained speed? If so, yeah, 4:88. If you drive mostly in town and only jump on/off the freeway you wouldn't realize the advantage of the taller gearing. Your driving style will account for more of a difference in MPG's than the difference between 4:88 and 5:13 gears. Your weight factor is the tipping point to me and biases the choice slightly more towards 5:13, but if you only carry a lot of weight sometimes then maybe it's not a factor. Consider that you do have heavy bumpers and if you will be installing good rock sliders and belly pans your weight will increase by the weight of another passenger... Anyway, you can't go wrong either way. Thanks for the well thought out vids, Sir!

definitely improves quality of life, simply owning mine feels like a life accomplishment and the added sense of adventure has turned me from a grouch on the couch always drinking and pissing and moaning to wanting to get out and do something every day, ive made some great new friends through jeep groups and we try to go out once a month or so and having those wheeling trips to look forward to make going to work less of a drag because its not just grinding for bills, its jeep part money

Start with an xj. They are cheep to buy and easy to build. Do it right, and it won’t cost you near as much as the cheapest wrangler you can find . Just saying . I’ve got 3000 into my xj and wouldn’t trade it for 10 wranglers. Yes they look nice but let’s not make wheeling a rich mans sport. Poor folk on a budget goes a Long way.

I wonder if Warner Bros used the trails like onion and Devils drive ? As inspiration for the road runner and coyote?

I have one question,with all the mods you have done to your Jeep why do you still have the hood prop rod on your hood instead of hood shocks

One of the little mods I was happier with than I thought I would be. It raises the hood a little higher making it easier to work under the hood without having the hood laid all the way back to to rest on the windshield or having the stock rod in the way.

K G jeeps, especially modified jeeps are really tall. I can barely lift the hood up to put the hood prop. If I would want to lift the hood up to the windshield, I would have to star walking on the side of the jeep holding the hood and having less of an angle to lift it up. Plus the hood is pretty heavy and the fenders stick out a lot to walk on the side.

@@kg2995 i assue you do not own or use a wrangler because the hoods can be laid back onto the windshield.

We are planning a Colorado trip for 2019. If you and Marco want to come along we’d love to have you help guide us. Haven’t been Jeeping there yet. Question on your dual s-pod: I’m running a PowerTank (100% loyal!) but planning to put in onboard air as a backup system if my Powertank goes out. Will that Dual s-pod get in the way of the mounting location for the dual compressor? Seems like it might. I don’t need a dual s-Pod yet (I just put in an 8 switch system and have only used one switch so far) but want to plan ahead, you know? By the way, I think it might be pronounced “OH-fir” with the emphasis on “Oh” Always awesome to watch your videos. Considering driving down to San Diego area to do some of those trails you’ve got. If we do we’ll let you know!

I'm not sure what 2019 has in store for us yet. Yes the dual sPOD mount will get in the way with an under the hood arb compressor mount. Under the seat is another option for the compressor. Thank you!
