What happened this April? - Lots of bees, rain, and a new baby on our Portuguese homestead

We're back! After a short hiatus we're back to making videos about our life here on our homestead in Central Portugal. Lots happened this April, so here's a selection of exciting events. The bees are super active at the moment, making it possible for us to split our existing hives and catch a few swarms from our neighbour (with his permission of course). As the Portuguese say "Abril aguas mil", so we also had lots of very heavy rain and even some hail. Gardening season is right underway, so I'm also getting back to planting for summer. And not to forget, the newest addition to the family, little Bo! He was born on April 12th and is doing fantastic. Enjoy!

New here? My name is Lea and I live with my partner Maarten and our toddler Puck on our land in Central Portugal. We left the rat race in the Netherlands in 2018 and moved south in our old campervan. Two years ago we bought land in Portugal that had been abandoned for several decades. After lots of hard work we now live in a beautiful yurt and keep ourselves busy growing our own vegetables as well as producing olive oil, wine and honey on a small scale. Congratulations on the birth of your new baby! How exciting for you both. Now you have both a Boy and a girl. How perfect is that! As for being born during the night, dont they all?? LOL Great job on catching the swarms. If you want to catch more swarms, melt old dirty wax and paint the inside of the traps with it, spray or place Lemon grass inside and raise the box up into a tree they like. A pull system works well for this. Swarms will often land in the same place year after year.

Maarten strimmed all the edges of the garden a few days ago and it's already looking much better :) We take it one step at a time, lucky for us the stormy spring weather is coming into May as well so the tomatoes need to stay indoors a little longer anyway

Congratulations on your new son. Second babies are usually quicker, your body knows what to do now. I'm sure Puck is enjoying her baby brother. The bees are wonderful, so necessary for any cultivator. The chickens must follow your digger around the property, they are so funny.

I found more success to go and manually catch the swarm when spotted, they are very particular where they move in , lucky lucky😁 ✌
