I think what happened was that Chinese manufacturers that were looking for business started making reference designs to show off their capabilities and at some point customers started buying reference designs with almost no changes. So now nearly all contract manufacturers in China have a catalog of reference designs that their customers can choose from and the customers simply slap their brand onto it. That is why Amazon is flooded with the same products that have many different brand names. And as you noted, Amazon does the same thing with a lot of their Basics line.

@@SteveSterlacci for the record this is not an accusation but I have to ask, do you honestly think there’s no evidence of copyright infringement? Also I’d argue by demo/showcasing these pedals you are advocating purchasing the knock-offs; or at the very least condoning it. How is rebranding legal? In fact without the registered owner’s permission it’s very much illegal. If you designed, developed and worked on something then Registered TM etc; only to find out someone used the same exact specs. They used the same colors and I’m not an electrician but the wiring would have to be similar at least. And sold it for pennies on the dollar? I’d be willing to bet rebranding would look a whole lot different to you. Again, I’m a fan of your channel. You do great work with your videos. This is just not one of them. Forgive my opinion. I left out a key word of licensing before. I would hope, and assume, that any of the rebranded companies are paying for the license to do so. When they buy in bulk, that would usually come with permission to brand and market as they see fit. No one at amazon is out here making pedals. There are plenty of sites that offer the service. Look at Martys Swarzinator or whatever it is. Hes doing the same thing but with his own name. And hes making money off the video AND sales lol I just made a video that apparently a lot of people are interested in. One man's perspective. I'm a tightwad, but love guitar effects. Many years ago I bought a DigiTech RP200 multi-effects pedal. Thought it was more cost effective than buying 50-60 pedals, since my kids were talking about college. I enjoy the hell out of monkeying around with the thing, even while knowing it's probably not what Eric Johnson uses to get his tone. It takes one plug-in, have something like 12 various amps models, a few different drum beats, and something like 28 different effects, and a tuner. The footprint is about the size of a shoebox. I am pretty confident the quality of the effects is nowhere near what you can get in a single-use pedal, probably even the cheapo ones. But it suits my needs. I'd be interested to hear from "serious" guitar folks why these types of multi-effects pedals are frowned upon...although I read that Weezer uses a Line 6 multi pedal.

I've put together 14 pedal boards with anywhere fro 10 to 15 of these "budget" pedals on each. I love them! They're awesome pedals. You get a dead one now and then but Amazon's return policy make refunding or replacement a breeze. I have several KOKKO pedals, Rowin, VSN, MOSKY, Satone, Azor, which are rebranded Caline pedals as I understand it. They are all pretty much identical circuits. I have that red distortion with the KOKKO name on it. It's a great sounding distortion. Nicely scooped. Plenty of gain on tap. Brutal. The most expensive pedal I have is a Carl Martin Plexitone which is a killer pedal too of course.

Hey Trap thank you! That means a lot. I started late at age 20, so just about 10 years into playing. An overdrive can do whatever you want it to do based on the application and style of OD it is. It can be a rhythm sound, or a lead sound depending on how it is set. Dont get so caught up "how to" and just twist some knobs until you find something you love. If it sounds good, it is good! Thanks for the vid Steve. I've always been just a guitar and amp guy. I have tried some of the modeling processors in the past, but even though they offer a lot of tones, usually they don't have good distortion, the chorus effects aren't that great, the reverbs are kinda lame, the list of issues goes on. The newer Helix, Headrush, and Kemper stuff seems cool, but the price is over the top even for the scaled down stuff like the three button Stomp models. These low cost spedals seem like a great option for some body liked me to get introduced to using pedals. There are so many pedals out there. These cheap... no, let me say more affordable pedals do seem to do a great job. Your excellent playing also demonstrated that the ability of the pedal to produce a pleasing tone is definitely available in these pedals. I also understand that some pedals are very expensive and some players have invested heavily in their pedal arrays. I, however, lack expertise with the instrument and experience with pedals period. It just doesn't make sense at my ability level to spend obscene amounts of money to get a distinct sound. I probably wouldn't be able to produce the tone I was hunting regardless of how expensive the equipment. Also, I appreciate the simplicity of these pedals. I have had great difficulty learning what little I know about playing the guitar and don't wish to spend a lot of time learning the nuances of complicated effect pedals. So Steve once again thanks. Now I have an idea how my first pedal board is going to look.

NUX, Mooer, Moen, Joyo and Caline make most of the pedals. In the West we have this illusion of lot of small factories throwing things together with a nearly literate staff etc. The truth is thousands of companies are cutting edge high tech. Hi tech makes things cheap ...cheap overhead which China has like tax, transportation costs, heat, electricity etc takes it from cheap to silly cheap. Mooer make 2000 pedals a day ...and it is usually a single model. The products are designed to fit in the same box and they are only pre drilled for a handful of choices. Reliability is BIG! The parts may not be gourmet spec but their failure rate is nano!

I bought a Mooer "Modfactory" because it was inexpensive, and looked fun. I've had it for two years now, and its been my 'go to' for trippy modulation effects, and I've used it for both guitar, and keyboards - having it, hearing how it sounds, and what it does has seriously led me to question the whole 'boutique' culture, which is so incredibly blown out with products now that it's just expensive, and confusing... Just last week, I was comparing the EHX "Torn Speaker" and the DOD Carcossa (both under 100.00) against a batch of Boutiques ranging from 150.00 to 250.00, and ended up walking out with the Torn Speaker because it just sounded better.

The Kokko pHf2 Phaser is pretty much a Phase 90 clone & is unique tooo Kokko since as said; none of the other knockoff brands offer a phaser pedal, nor the deep orange color it's painted. i have to say it's a decent, not half bad stompbox & it's small size is favorable for adding it tooo a existing pedal board setup that might be a little crowded, plus it's seamless button tap true bypass analog circuitry (unlike that latest new Boss brand;Waza Craft¿) thanx dude(s)

Rebranding isn't new, most electronics are made in Shenzhen and the scale If it is huge. You buy an order of bulk and they just repaint them. Companies are aware name is everything, so I'd probably bet that even the big boys have some rebrands in their silo, especially for the more accessible pricepoint product. Maybe it's my attitude towards pricing, or the whole married with kids type budget, but if it sounds good, unless it's something extra unique I'm not going to moan about paying less for the same thing.

If you're looking at £20 units, you're not that fussed about quality.... and the satisfaction of playing your own kit is pretty good. It's a good hobby. 2 years later and these pedals are still basically sold out and unavailable. Other than the compression pedal they're not on the site anymore. Just weird considering they were insanely popular when released and sold out so fast. Why were they profitable enough for Amazon to introduce but not keep in stock? It seems like they must have made a profit.Or is it just THAT much easier to sell other brands versions and let them deal with manufacturing costs. Must not have been profitable enough.

They are a mass production company who if you buy a large order they will make them and silk screen whatever name on it you want. Its worth checking out. very cool.
