I return to Bond Street in the South Shore area of Blackpool. The shopping section of the street has gone markedly downhill since the 70's & 80's, when it was a very busy thoroughfare.

Thank you Stephen, you have put an awful lot of work into this video. It's really sad that there is so much devastation on Bond Street, but great to see someone who isn't afraid to show the real life issues in Blackpool. You always get the balance just right. You show your home town in an exceptionally positive way. We are treated to the beautiful views, gorgeous sunsets and lots of helpful information about all of the attractions, that make the town so popular with tourists. Equally, you never shy away from showing the gritty real life on the streets that lie behind the glitzy lights of the Golden Mile. You bring an endless amount of trade to Blackpool, but you still tell it as it is, and that's fantastic xxx

It used to be thriving down that end of town. I worked on Station Road for many years and it saddens me to see the state it's in now. The heart and soul have been ripped out of the place. This is wilful neglect. Another great video 👍

Had to laugh at your "the world coming to an end on Bond Street" comment. But have to say I'm genuinely shocked at the state of the area. It would appear that the bloke who wants to turn everything into car parks, has no real desire to regenerate the buildings or area. I'm Blackpool born and bred and I'm heartened by the regeneration in the town centre, but it's going to take decades of investment to return the areas to anything like they once were. Keep up the good work👍

Mrs Johnson’s Emporium is a truly beautiful shop. A paradise for a crocheter / sewer like me. The collectibles shop isn’t too bad. It’s on the border of being a bit creepy lol but that might just be me 😂 I remember the fairy shop - if I’m getting this right it used to be just off Gynn Square. I bought two beautiful handmade clay magic wands from there in around 2009/2010ish. I’d heard it moved to Bond Street but by the time I’d visited Blackpool again and found it it had already closed down again seemingly permanently which is a real shame. Everywhere not just Blackpool needs these small independent shops that sell the beautiful and unique things you can’t get in the cut and paste chain shops.

hi steve. great video as always . i think that the decline in this part of waterloo road and bond street bagan when royal mail moved the sorting office to edward street in the late 90s then closed the counter soon after. overnight 70 staff went away. there was no canteen so all food and drink etc. was bought outside. at end of shift we often had a pint in the pubs there. it was a huge loss to business especially in the winter.

Thanks for this video. My grandma used to live above the "South Shore Bargins" store and I've got vivid memories of popping to the chippy across the road and taking it back and playing on a Sega Megadrive in the basement below there. I distinctively remember all buildings were connected to one another down there through a series of tunnels. I wonder if that's public knowledge or not.

Part of the problem with Bond Street is that the council and Historic England call it an “Area of Special Local Character” with that a number of buildings have been given local listing. This makes making changes to some buildings more difficult. In addition loss of footfall between Central Pier and the Pleasure Beach has reduced numbers shopping in the area. It needs some investment, which the council won’t contribute to. So buildings just decay until they fall down.

Scorched kneecaps!! A fun house full of fantastic friction burns. You might be right about the Pleasure Beach charges. The sights, smells and sounds of the Pleasure Beach were an attraction themselves, and they were free. You could spend hours there just wandering around, having a go on the Arabian Derby or one of the big rides, go out to do some shopping or to find a cheaper place to eat and then go back in to do something else. It supplied local retailers with customers but now it hangs on to them, takes their money and sends them home.

A pity in most of these town walk-arounds the day of the week or at least the time of the year is never mentioned. To be honest Stephen has been slowing down and speeding up his voice since his channel started in July 2020. There's quite a bit of footage of Stephen doing backwards and forwards filming too, very funny stuff. 😊

You are concentrating on the worst areas but cant fully understand why people on here say it’s declining and is run down etc and one of the worst places in uk ? Why then is it the number one holiday seaside hotspot with record no of visitors this year and last ? - fireworks championships last night and couldn’t move with the crowd and when it’s a nice day during the season it’s packed . There’s Stanley park and the zoo and another 4 beautiful resorts also close by like st Anne’s and Lytham , bispham, cleveleys and fleetwood (which is all administratively part of Blackpool ) - you can get a ferry over to knott end and visit the beautiful mountains of piling and there’s Freeport shopping arcade etc ) and beautiful coastal scenery which joins all of them together and the season extends now upto early January with the Christmas area at the front with free ice skating and rides etc and there even in the process of building a big indoor entertainment complex with markets and rides and virtual reality cinema which should be ready in a few years . Admittedly though on the surface when you first arrive here it can look a bit run down in various places and there are a lot of beggars and druggies and there needs to be more jobs and it can look gloomy in winter but that can be said for most places in the uk. A lot of people slag the place off come from Manchester and I visited Manchester City centre recently and the no of beggars on the streets was appalling and round the outskirts it can look run down as well and once you go further out there’s hardly anything there exciting although heaton park and the Trafford centre are nice but other than those and even though there are more employment opportunities there but here there are more jobs than in most seaside resorts as we also have all the main businesses , a town centre-and hospitals and industrial areas and of course there is the seasonal employment so if your willing to make an effort and sometimes be flexible in what your willing to accept then there is work - you’ve just got to make the effort to find it . But if you have an income in Blackpool it can be an enjoyable place to be and there’s always things to do even in mid winter - shows, indoor water slides park , three piers with rides and shows etc , a big theme park , Stanley park and a zoo and a large nature reserve at the back and holiday camping park and the village hotel with large golf course and outdoor heated swimming pool all year round , staining countryside for rambling, the tower with tower dungeon and loads of entertainment inside , arcades, swimming pools, vintage trams , beaches and sea with some beautiful sunsets , sandcastle ( a big indoor water slide park ) , seas life centre (big indoor aquarium ) ,big posh hotels and cheap b&b’s and shows and events such as red arrows and fireworks championships and outdoor concerts and winter gardens with loads of events like strictly come dancing tv show etc etc , loads of bars pubs clubs cafes opera houses and talent shows and a circus in the tower . We’ve even got Southport and Lancaster and morcambe and the peak and Lake District on our doorstep . So, yeah, it’s a little rough round the edges but you do get a lot and I’d rather live here as it has more to offer than most places in uk for me at least and have visited quite a few places in the uk and apart from places like London and apart from a few parks and city centres most of it is quite boring and depressing especially with the poor weather most of the time .

8-9 out of 10 of my videos show the positive side, whilst the rest might be the negative side or neither. I think it's good that I show all sides, as I'm not one for trying to sweep things under the carpet. I've lived here all my life & don't think I'll ever move away.
