Update: So I realized just after uploading this that I somehow forgot to mention what happened to David Blaine the chef in my script, but I did research him. There really wasn't any information about his current whereabouts that I could find though. I found several people spreading rumors about what he was up to, but on investigating they all turned out to be either untrue or unverifiable. One rumor that I saw several times was that he had opened another restaurant but a quick search revealed that it was a different chef named David Blaine that looked nothing like the one from the episode.

Hello I'm a lawyer. Looking at the timeline of events posted by the court website, I can see that Daniel (who brought the case to the courts initially) was also the one filing for the case to be dismissed. It's likely that one of two things happened: 1. The case didn't have enough evidence for Daniel to be successful and he withdrew to avoid further legal costs; or 2. Daniel and Alan came to an agreement outside of the courts and didn't need to pursue the case further. If Daniel managed to start a proceeding, there was likely enough evidence to convince him and his lawyer to go down that route. The likely outcome was that Alan paid Daniel an agreeable amount on the basis that no further legal proceedings would be made.

Once you do a deep dive into the backstory of Allan, your perspective may change. Allan's father "Mr. Sin" was a crime boss who wanted Allan to inherit the criminal kingdom. Allan refused and made a life outside of Australia, pursuing the entertainment industry and later the restaurant business. There is surely wrongdoing between Allan and Daniel, but when you compare The Burger Kitchen to the criminal underground, those are two completely different beasts. He knew the place was in financial trouble and had he quit or been fired on any other day while not on national TV, he knew he wouldn’t have ever been paid….he saw his opportunity and then did and said everything he could think of to get fired. Some people try to put some of the blame on David. But the man proved that he can cook properly when allowed to, wasn't being paid on the regular, and hated the owners (and so did their son, so that's not even something you can blame him alone for). Yes, he had an attitude, and I would have as well under the same conditions. But as far as I could tell, he was the sole person whose job performance needed the smallest amount of improvement. So of course he was fired for arguing with the son over the son's flawed order system (which was replaced by Gordon), who was also a victim of his parents and couldn't take it anymore. And even if you're totally against David as a person, the very fact that he had so much trouble collecting his final paycheck should have been all the proof anyone needed that removing him didn't solve the problems, nor was he the source of them. After all, if he was the problem, then cutting him a check to ensure a fast exit should have been easy. But they didn't have the money -- like he'd been saying from the start. Almost like it was the truth. But I suppose it would have been nearly impossible to fire the parents. Anyway, the very fact that problems continued even without David involved would imply that the major source of them remained. Maybe he wasn't helping, but if you ask the son, I'm sure someone else was doing the bulk of the hurting.

Some more info that I found: - A SeriousEats review from 2010 (from before filming) has a little blurb about Alan and Daniel that portrays them both as being willful partners in the restaurant and that it was their mutual brainchild. It also mentions that Alan ran a steakhouse back in Australia. - From 1993 to 1997, Alan co-ran a specialty toy store in Santa Monica called the Puzzle Box. He bragged that he was one of the first retailers to import Power Rangers toys to the American market. - Daniel, or someone claiming to be Daniel, has a history of arguing with food reviewers online-blaming the chefs/suppliers for poor quality, saying people are exaggerating how bad things are, lobbing petty ad hominems, and even going as far as to say one critic was anti-Semitic towards him (unaware that said critic was Jewish too). - Per the Sydney Morning Herald, although Alan got $500k, all 8 of Abe's grandkids (including Alan's 5 kids) got $1,000,000 each in his will. Assuming it's in ASD, that would be ~$375k and $750k USD, respectively. - The SMH article also claimed that Alan had suffered a stroke in December that had left him unable to work as of early 2011. A photo in the article shows Alan with a walker, evidently in a physical rehab program. He claimed in an interview that part of the reason he was suing was to help cover work & medical costs, and evidently his children were helping pay to cover him while he convalesced. - Per the Daily Telegraph, he still wasn't working full time as a result of his stroke in October 2011. - There's a blog where Alan himself hops into a slapfight in the comments, claiming that Daniel joined him as a willing business partner from day 1, the restaurant was sold in 2011/12, and that Daniel would be fully reimbursed for all the money he invested. (The lawsuit you mentioned suggests that it didn't pan out. - David Blaine is the executive pastry chef at the Mission Inn in Riverside, CA, and seems to be doing pretty well for himself.

Wagyu beef isn't cheap, and in a master chef's hands it's absolutely amazing. The problem is it's extremely unforgiving and being frozen makes it even more so. Because the fat content is so low it cooks extremely quickly and dries out fast. Allan figured wagyu automatically meant better, but if you don't treat it right it turns to sand really easily. If you've ever seen the UK version of the show(which is miles better than the US version), it focuses more on the food and the restaurants cleanliness than it does on "drama"(which the US version plays up). His latest show, 24 Hours to Hell and Back, filmed their(as of this time) most recent episode right before the pandemic hit, in a city nearby mine. My wife and I went down to the filming on "reveal day". The episode was "Save Our Town", and Gordon and his team did 3 locations in Ellicott City, Maryland. After filming the reveal(they were there for the week, because of the scope of the project), I had a chance to meet Gordon momentarily, as he was still very busy. I didn't get an autograph(nor did I ask for one), but I did have the few seconds I needed to shake his hand, and say, "Thank you, Gordon, for everything." You see, he's been an inspiration to me ever since I heard about him in the early 2000s. I'm no chef, but the lessons he gives to the people on his shows, can be applied in everyone's life. Add in that he literally worked himself from poverty to the most successful restauranteur on the planet... AND he has instilled that kind of work ethic into his children.... the man is a legend!

@@IggyStardust1967 the UK version had much better restaurants. Even Gordon has commented that none of the worst Uk restaurants came close to how bad the least worst US restaurant was.

he really doesn’t do it that well. a lot of these places fall apart within a few months, often before the episode airs. these shows are made in the edit, and obviously the thesis statement of the show is that gordon is a positive influence. so a bit of b-roll from the week after gordon leaves town while the restaurant gets a week or so of being full thanks to exterior renovation and local publicity from gordon being in town, intercut with shots of staff looking busy and happy, with a voice over about how sales are up just makes gordon look like he gave the owners a good kick in the ass and saved the joint, when in reality that’s almost never what happens

I'll read Alan's book. I have no doubt that he did better than his father. May Alan rest in peace in the end. He still stole from his son financially, and it took his toll emotionally. There are many things he never learned. The mother though... Wow just wow. She was something else.

David's anger and frustration were almost completely justified. Imagine being forced to serve shit food when you know you're actually a talented chef, constantly getting blamed for the owners' stupidity, and not getting paid on time to boot. He seems like a decent guy, so it was also probably frustrating for him to watch Daniel get treated like a doormat by his parents. That argument with Daniel was just both of them reaching a breaking point after who knows how many weeks and months of stress. The constant comments about Prozac could be seen as childish or needlessly specific, but he was at least right in his assertion that Jen needed to be on it if she wasn't. I don't blame him at all for losing his shit and storming out like that, he lasted a lot longer than most people would have.

No. Daniel got substantially more than $250k from his grandfather. His father took it without his knowledge straight away an used it in combination with his own inheritance to initially buy the restaurant and has been bleeding off of him additionally as time went on.

This is the one episode that I cannot watch again because of how angry it made me feel the first time. I don't want to just repeat what everyone's said because it's all obvious how terrible the parents are and how they don't realize their own insanity, and even when they said they would change I didn't believe them. The one thing about it that I really didn't understand is Gordon in this episode. Gordon usually calls it like he sees it, and he has no problems with calling out when someone's being horrible, and I didn't understand at the time why he doesn't do his usual thing where he should be calling out the parents for what they're doing, but he doesn't. I don't think he ever raises his voice one time at the parents. I realized why later, but yeah I don't know. Gordon didn't want to be on the bad end of Alan's connections, but it's a shame because if anyone needed to be yelled at it was them.

Something this video did, that i saw other vids and blogs do, is claim David was accusing Jenny of abusing Prozac. Even in the 2010s i wasnt sure how they came to that. In the late 2000s "take some prozac" was a jab telling people to lighten up. Hes telling her shes a mopey old grump and needs happy-meds - which is an insult but means she needs the stuff, not that shes using it

13:20 The Sydney Morning Herald report would be in Australian dollars, in the show the amount was presumably stated in US dollars. At the time, the AUD may have been around the 50 US cent mark. AUD500k then becomes USD250k.

For the confusion regarding the $500 000 and $250 000 inheritance could be that the article was from The Sydney Morning Herald, which is an Australian based newspaper, while the show was a part of the US Kitchen Nightmares, so they are likely using each specific countries exchange rate. For around September 2006 when his father died $500 000AUD comes to about $380 000USD, considering any additional payments to get that inheritance like transfer charges between international banks and perhaps debts he could have immediately payed off you might be able to argue that missing difference of 130k but the bigger part of a missing chunk definitely comes from the two different types of dollars between AUD/USD.
