This woman is telling you the truth. My husband is a Lebanese Maronite Christian like Brigitte Gabriel and she is telling the truth. I have heard about Brigitte Gabriel's town of Marjayoun during the Civil War in Lebanon and we lived here in Canada and the horrors that we heard about. My husband's uncle was the Director of UNRWA during those days and our mail was sent to Vienna Austria before getting to Lebanon and the same with answers back and there was no internet in those days and no electricity back then many times. Everything that this lady is saying is so true. Yes there were plenty of groups example Christians with different groups and the Muslims the same. This lady is bringing up a lot of history that I remember hearing about. When my kids were little we had a Lebanese babysitter for a short while and they purchased a home here in Ottawa and they had a triplex. One of the men in the triplex was a soldier in Lebanon and he was tortured during the war and the Muslims burned crosses all over his body. The Palestinians started the war and this is all true. Everything this lady is saying is so very true. My sister in law who is now deceased was shot in the leg going for groceries at a nearby store. The suffering that the people went through is unbelievable. You don't know the suffering unless you go through this for yourselves.

Islam is either somewhat or diametrically opposed to all these values with its desire for Patriarchy; Sharia; Theocracy or direct-action where democracy returns an "unacceptable" result at the ballot box; Victim-shaming, particularly in cases of rape; Homo- and Trans-phobia; The "right" to not be insulted and the "crime" of insulting arbitrary people, particularly their prophet; Extreme, unparalleled intolerance; Unending marriage, no matter how unhappy or abusive; Control over what education is "acceptable" and for whom; Violence, however brutal and, where "the ends justify the means", the glorification of that violence, however brutal or even senseless; Lastly, and most crucially, The regulation of the thoughts, behaviors and morality of one's "neighbor" even where it has no affect on oneself or others whatsoever, including but not limited to the banning or regulation of music, art, consensual sex & divorce, food, books, the press, drugs & alcohol, non-conforming worship & religion, comedy and free-expression more generally. I have not even presented these values particularly unfairly (though I'm clearly biased). Obviously there is a hugely wide spectrum of how these sorts of values are rolled out and enforced in practice across different Muslim groups in different Islamic and non-Islamic countries, and obviously the majority of muslims are lovely people on a personal level, but there's no doubt the values of Islam and modern western secularism are radically different. They are doomed to either conflict or mixing only a limited scope. That second option isn't so bad, but unless the rate of islamic immigration to the west, and Europe in particular, is curbed, there will without a doubt be persistent and ever increasing violence and civil unrest. The same would be absolutely true if a bunch of westerners wanted and were allowed to emigrate to most muslim-majority countries (Turkey and Bosnia being notable exceptions) I should add; I'm not so much trying to flame with all this as I am trying to outline why I think the two cultures will not peacefully coexist (where the minority numbers are meaningful) unless one radically changes. I doubt the west will regress towards Islam, so fingers crossed Islam will modernize, particularly on women's rights and the supremacy of civil law- those are the two real deal-breakers.

Ms Gabriel's account of the destabilising effect of the PLO in Lebanon is confirmed in the fifteen part KZbin documentary, The Lebanese Civil War by Joseph R Hennawy. The documentary shows very clearly that the overtaking of the Christian population by the Muslim one, which did require changes in the political constitution to take that into account, created a tension which was hugely exacerbated by the move of the PLO from Jordan to Lebanon. The problem was not the Palestinians' refugee status, but the PLO's insistence on the right to use Lebanon as a base for attacks against Israel, the very reason the organisation was kicked out of Jordan. The fact that this rode roughshod over Lebanese sovereignty but was more popular with Lebanese Muslims who had become the majority, than Christians who were now in the minority, brought the constitutional deficit to a head, with the secular left siding with more religious Muslims in demanding majority rule. At first glance, the case for majority rule appears compelling to any Western democrat, but in a country like Lebanon where the constitution is specifically designed as a compromise to protect very large indigenous minorities, majority rule must be limited in its scope by a constitution acceptable to all sides. The militarisation of the south of the country by an outside power - the PLO - was not acceptable to all sides and was considered by many to be an attack on the sovereign Lebanese compromise. It was in that context that the inter-confessional tensions, including the Sunni-Shia-Druze disputes, came to the fore and quickly polarised into an elemental and typically uncontrollable and indisciplined brutal civil war in which Christians no less than Muslims, were culpable of barbaric acts of vengeance and cruelty. The culpability of both sides in this respect, should not detract, I feel, from the fact that the Lebanese Christian community, along with Lebanon's constitutional multi-cultural compromise, were the principal political casualties of the PLO's determination to use Lebanon as a base for their attacks against Israel. It was able to get away with this because of the temporary weakness of the out-dated constitution.

+Fred Bloggs Just to add that I do find Ms Gabriel's account very hammed up for her audience, which opens her to the criticism of being too one-sided and over-simplistic. When, for example, she speaks of four Muslim gunmen causing the thing to flare up when they walked into a Church and shot up the congregation, this contrasts strongly with the Christian killing of 200 ordinary Muslim citizens in Beirut at that time, in revenge for four Christians murdered by gunmen. She doesn't mention this at the same time as her own anecdote, which she should if she wants to be taken seriously by impartial observers. Similarly, her account of Sharia courts in Britain, is a caricature of how they are legally allowed to operate. They are only supposed to adjudicate on relatively minor matters like neighbour disputes. They are not allowed to contradict UK law. If they did they would be open to prosecution themselves. I still don't think we should recognise them even in that capacity, but it doesn't help to exaggerate their capacity, and detracts from the more pertinent aspects of Ms Gabriel's message.
