Coca-Cola is one of the strongest brands in the world if not the strongest. Virtually everyone recognizes the brand regardless of age, location, or interests. But, despite the strong legacy of Coca-Cola, they haven’t been doing all that well over the past 20 years. In fact, Coca-Cola stock has barely grown over the past 20 years, and the growth actually loses to the S&P 500 and even inflation. At first glance, you may be driven to think that this is mainly due to Coca-Cola becoming a mature company and not having much headroom. But, this is not exactly true given that Pepsi has been killing it. In the past 20 years, Pepsi has grown multiple folds and is on the cusp of taking over Coca-Cola altogether in terms of market cap. So what happened to Coca-Cola? Well, usually, these sorts of delines can’t be linked to a singular event, but in the case of Coca-Cola, they can be. The reality is that the entire growth of Coca-Cola can be explained by a singular man: Roberto Goizueta. Ever since this man died, Coca-Cola’s growth has stalled out. This video explains the story of Coca-Cola and Roberto Goizueta and why Coca-Cola has struggled to continue growing.

My uncle owns a restaurant and Coca-Cola and Pepsi provide branded fridges, Coca-Cola was so strict even didn't allow the fruit juices made in the restaurant to be stocked inside their fridge. He had enough of them and kicked them out, the restaurant now has 2 Pepsi fridges and they only refuse to stock Coca-Cola in their fridges, all other local beverages are not an issue.

That may be true in some countries. However, in some countries like Mexico the consumption has continued to expand. I think that is partly because Coca Cola has just become a daily staple. In Greece, the last few years we have 3 new soda companies, competing with “healthier” options like stevia or metallic water, Coca-Cola rushed to release their versions. I am 43 and have two kids, 8 and 3. Here in Brazil in the 80s and 90s, people drunk "colas" all the time. In my home, the fridge was constantly stocked with coke, guaraná soft drink (a brazilian soft drink, plenty of brands doing it, including one by Coke and other from Pepsi), Sprite. In some other homes I remember they usually only drunk it on weekends (which I found absurd when I visited friends and wanted to have something to drink and they offered water instead of coke) And in my state, Pepsi sold a lot and lots of people were ultra faithful to it, because Pepsi had a factory here so it was embraced as local, while Coke, who had factories in other states, was "outsider". NOWADAYS, in kids birthday parties, the kids drunk juice and water... AND DON´T DRINK soft drinks!!! One party were were a few months ago in a kids party house, the woman went to a group of 20 kids eating stuff with a jar of coke in one hand a a jar of water in the other. ZERO kids accepted the Coca Cola!! My kids NEVER drunk soft drinks. MY 8 yr old girl refuses to even try Coke.

I have been an intern one summer at the biggest sugar factory in Poland. The company sales sugar to customers, but also to vast array of other food producers in the country. One of them is local Coca-Cola bottler. When you look at sugar, you see crystals of different size, but the substance is exactly the same. However, Coca-Cola buys only sorted sugar with uniform size of crystals. Very strange considering all that sugar dissolves in water later...

New Coke was when they lost me. Prior to that, I was mainly a Coke guy, though to be honest, there wasn’t that big of a difference between it and Pepsi. I would get Pepsi if that was what was offered at a restaurant or whatever. But I hated New Coke. When they brought “Classic” Coke back, I don’t care what they say, it wasn’t the same good ole Coke anymore. It did not taste the same as it used to. I totally switched to Pepsi and I would refuse Coke completely. I haven’t drunken it at all for years and will only drink Pepsi. I think it was the dumbest move ever for Coke.

I remember going into a soda fountain and asking for a soda and they looked at me like I was a weird bug and told me they didn't had any. "Oh I'm sorry" - I stepped outside and looked at the sign again.- 'Yup, soda fountain.' I went back in "Have you worked here for long?" "Five years." "Have you ever read the sign on the door?" "Why?" "Please read it." The lady was kind enough to indulge me "It said Soda Fountain, right?" "...uh." "Can I have a soda, please?" "We... don't sell soda." I pointed at the sign "...we don't sell soda." "You do know soda is just the official name for soft drinks like coca cola, right?" "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH" Was and will be forever amused by the lady that had worked fice years in a soda fountain and didn't know what a soda was. I was just amused, but always worry I may have come across as an ass. We laugh about it each time I go get a soda, though.
@ffejpsycho

where i live, we use "Pop" almost entirely in place of "Soda" as the generic term for any misc. carbonated beverage, not specifically meant to reference 'Coca-Cola' products exclusively... like if I just asked for a pop, (or soda... if i wanted people to think me strange thinking i want plain carbonated water...) it would be so vague as to be a useless statement... I would have to add to pop a qualifier... like an Orange, root beer, coke, pepsi, ginger-ale all of which fall under the umbrella term Pop to us... I had thought "Soda" kinda worked the same way... though also could refer to a fountain dispensed drink instead of a can, or bottle from a plant and delivered... that's how I would instinctively interpret "Soda" to mean, first plain soda water... then realizing that's an insane thing to drink... as concentrated beverage syrup (see: Glycol/Antifreeze/Essentially Poison), plus co2 mixed upon order, dispensed via fountain, tap... Weird that... Somehow, with the addition of poison, it then alters the drinking of co2 water.... desirable, guess its same with alcohol so...... man, Dialect, and linguistic drift, and cognitive dissonance are always dedicated to keeping both decision making, and communication fun, eh?

I feel like there's another issue, but I'm not sure how to put it... so I'll tell a story! In canada, there's a chain called Swiss Chalet. Basically, it's rotisserie chicken. At some point in the 2010's, all franchises in southern Ontario switched from Coke to Pepsi. This sent a friend of mine around the bend, and he started talking to everyone he could about it. What I recall of it was that whomever was the bottler in the area changed their prices, and coke's syrups were no longer economical, so a bunch of restaurant chains switched to Pepsi. My friend claims to have gotten in touch with the VP of sales for the region at Coke, and was told that they were aware of the problem, but because of contracts or something, there was nothing they could do at the time. Something at Coke is very broken if a partner can cause you to lose a bunch of large contracts in Canada's largest and densest population centre.

I don't think they ever tasted the same after "New Coke". I also hate that the switched to corn syrup instead of cane sugar. And the final blow for me is mostly offering their cola in plastic bottles. It literally tastes like plastic to me. Glass (the best) or aluminum cans only is my policy.
@ffejpsycho
@ffejpsycho Жыл бұрын
technically plastic is the "better" for intended taste of product... as it better blocks UV light, vs. no blocking with glass (unless treated, which isn't required by law... so wont be)... and UV light over time alters the product within... so go with Plastic, unless it is actually UV uhhh 'enhanced' taste you prefer... which is actually no better or worse just acquired taste preference...

Coca Cola never tasted right after they dropped the 6oz heavy glass bottles. The tangy zing was gone and ever since then Coke tasted flat. They introduced an orange-cream not too long ago and all I can say about it is.... . A couple of years ago I went to a local store to get my annual can of Coke. I opened, took a swallow and well.... the old taste was back. It was great. The owner mentioned something about it being a special limited run. A few weeks later I decided to try Coke again but she sold out the special run and it was back to the watery soup that passes for Coke these days.

Pepsi Max definitely tastes a lot better than both diet Coca Cola and Coca Cola Zero. There’s just something about the aftertaste of sugar free Coca Cola that doesn’t sit well with me, along with it tasting a bit watery. With Pepsi Max the only way to tell it’s sugar free is because it’s not sticky and not sickening sweet. The flavor of Pepsi Max is a lot more refined as well. Pepsi completely nailed it when it comes to sugar free cola type beverages

Well, to be fair, even Diet Pepsi to me tastes better than Diet Coke. Didn't Pepsi Max (I think it was called this because it also had Ginseng in the soda too) change name to Pepsi Zero. For Diet Coke and Coke Zero, I prefer getting those out of the flex machine since they have all kinds of flavors in there (my favorites are Cherry, Cherry Vanilla, Strawberry, and in Wendy's machines [not sure if any one else's flex machines have it yet] Cream Soda)...this is also true with Diet Dr Pepper from those special fountains. Yep in regards to the versus thing, besides the plain Diet/Zero/Max if it has flavor I'll drink either. I notice with Coke I think they have adjacent brands, such as, Dr. Pepper and Seagrams. I feel like for both standard Diet and Zero/Max formulations Pepsi nailed it.

One reason here in Switzerland is the reduction of bottle sizes. Coca cola now sells less product for the same money. But it's even worse when you are looking for a particular size. Profits matter, not revenue. With half the revenue, Coca Cola's margins are 4x Pepsi's. It's easy for the market to value by a revenue multiple, but future free cash flow is what matters. Also, Coke refranchised bottlers because they permeated best practices already and want to be nimble and asset-lite. Yes, they need to move beyond beverages, but it doesn't mean entering the fast food or snacking space like Pepsi is right for them. I'll bet on Coke any day, thanks.

I've become something of a soda snob and usually go for options with cane sugar when I can (which for Coke means the red-cap bottles from Mexico). I'm not sure if it's any healthier, but I find it's more satisfying. A twelve ounce bottle of the real sugar version always seems to get the job done even though I can easily suck down much larger fountain servings of the corn syrup version. Maybe the weight of the glass bottle makes it feel more substantial as well.

Pepsi isn't beating Coca Cola in soft drinks. They own other brands like Lay's chips, that add to it's yearly revenue. I wonder how much the price gouging has to do with their limited sales, at least here in the UK. For example, 20 years ago, a 2 litre bottle would cost me one Euro in a supermarket in Barcelona, whilst we were being charged GBP £1.85 at the same time in England. I guess not much has changed on this front. It's recently gone up to £3 for a 2½-litre bottle, up from £2.50 late last year and £2.29 a few months prior to that. Many of the soft drinks I used to enjoy e.g. Lemon Fanta are off-limits now, since with the rip-off Sugar Tax a lot of the recipes have been changed to include Aspartame and nasty-smelling Saccharin. I read somewhere that Sacharin was banned in some parts. Aspartame bloody well SHOULD be. Hope Jamie Oliver is proud of his achievement.
