I have zero problem with KZbinrs using their channel to get wishlists. They're doing the work and deserve the reward. But running a channel is hard and inevitably leads to burnout eventually. The upside is that when they stop, there's room in the market for others to come along.

As someone who's moved on from success on KZbin I can say 100% that burnout is real and it's SO EASY to start hating making videos, even when they were so fun and worked so well in the beginning. Definitely don't feel bad about taking time away or retiring completely, just make sure you're honest with yourself! It's easy to let that monthly check sway your perception on what's best for you. As long as you believe in whatever choice you're making, it's the right one. Stay or go, you've made an impact and that'll never change!

I hope the "2 weeks is all I need" thing remains true for you. I'm a little older than you are and had a similar experience where I thought all I needed was a vacation, some time off. Take held things at bay for a couple of years, as I chained vacations every ~8 months. The truth is though, we're reaching mid-life and there's tons of crisis level thoughts and concerns churning through our minds. The work we're doing suddenly seems - whether consciously or not - like it isn't actually all that important in the grand scheme of things. The "why" is suddenly more important than ever, and many of us don't have a good answer for it. Good luck bud, appreciate you being honest about this issue. The other possibility is that its related to COVID and being infected 3 times has run its course on my brain and left me utterly destroyed from a mental health + motivation perspective. Totally possible!

If your life feels like it needs a vacation, realize that you need to change something. Just think. You need 2 weeks off to rest. And then what? You're going to do the same thing over and over again? Stop your loop and try to find your spiral of life.

The mid-life crisis feeling is real in the 30s. I'm late 30s now, and I took an opposite path. When Covid hit, I quit my job and started developing my own projects. The "why" question led me away from what I was doing for money solely, and into something more risky but more gratifying. Why am I a game dev? Because I'm alive and I want to create, and that's enough to drive me. I want to bring an audience with me, and make a living, but at the end of the day the "why" needs to come from that place.
@Rick-ng3lr
@Rick-ng3lr 6 ай бұрын
@@Simon-ik1kbyou only need 1% of willingness to break out of your loop. And don't even try to do 100% because that will bring you back to where you started. Don't focus on what you want to achieve. Like I said before. Embrace the unknown as your foundation of life. And have 1% of willingness to change, and you will notice it will happen. One step at a time. And the strange part of it is that you don't have to work that hard to achieve whatever it is your soul desires. In fact if you try to hard, your back where you don't want to be. I repeat: accept the unknown. And you will see that you are free all along. :) You can do it.

Unfortunately there's a bit more to it than that. The idea isn't just retention but also acquisition. Its ultimately a numbers game and putting yourself in a position to where you're most probable to succeed at even the most conservative estimates. To that end its a constant cat and mouse game with the algorithm and unfortunately it values consistency.

Escape velocity would be nice. I guess for myself, something even better than that would be, to be able to make whatever videos I want, and not worry about the strategic ways to try to say things for retention, and not worry about video ideas that will convince people to click, but I think you need escape-velocity level success to achieve that, or just simply not be too interested in using youtube for an external purpose, but purely just love making videos, which, as much as I love making videos, I can't say I love it enough to just do it without hoping I can send people somewhere else and fund my own work eventually.

So rare to find that these days, seems it is sharing those kind of feelings that cause stockholders to pull out of big companies, or in the case of KZbinrs, subscribers to disappear. Hey! Thanks a lot for sharing really. I'm a full time developer (not game dev), dad to a 6yo daughter, husband, and I love making games in my spare time. And because of how things work in the industry, I'm forced to do KZbin. It's about a year already and I 100% agree with you. It's not natural (at least for me) and it's exhausting. Moreover, because I'm forced to do KZbin I'm working less on the game itself. That's such an ironic. Anyway. Wish you all the best ❤

When I watch Game Dev KZbinrs, and I watch a LOT. I watch DevLogs constantly, plus anything else I can absorb passively while working my 9-5 job. I do it with the understanding that many of them do what I do. Many of them do what you do. However you spin it, making games and living a life is already a TON of time spent. I can't expect that KZbin will also consistently be a part of that. So I Subscribe. I ring the bell. I wait until they have something to say whether it's a day, a week, a month, or year. And honestly, you are the only one that has been consistent in that time. So I want you to know you don't have to be. Many have mostly started to do mostly live streams because it's content with less work. Do what you need to do to stay mentally healthy. At least mostly. I feel like game dev is something only the slightly crazy go after.

Hey, I’m new to this channel first video I’ve ever seen from you. When you mentioned that you made neversong, a question came to mind: I have always wondered how the Apple Arcade contract works on the developer’s side (ie the cost, how long it lasts, the renewal process) because a lot of good games from publishers as big as annapurna have just been abandoning their releases on Apple Arcade (the example of annapurna being a game called the Pathless) and when the contract ends for these games they most of the time just disappear off the face of the earth without any real explanation other than “the developers didn’t renew their three year contract with Apple”. But then there are certain games like this one called No Way Home (no not spider man related) which are made exclusively for Arcade and when you go on their website they say it is only on Arcade but of course the game has just disappeared and will never be found again. This was quite a long comment but I hope you get my question and can go into the contract process in detail, thanks

I think knowing where you are is so important, being burnt out, being down, having that rain cloud over you, it sucks, but you can recognise it, you know the sun will shine again and you will find your flow, and get back at it. Im not 100% sure on the others business set up, but from your open-ness, we know its your studio, but its not just you. You have to look after your employees, your wife, children and the future of all these combined things, so knowing when to pull back from other area, to make sure you don't crumble, that will pay dividends in the long run.

I do enjoy a lot of your content if not all of it. Even though it’s unity and I prefer unreal, but I still like to watch your content. Doing a lot of the same things gets exhausting and hard to find that goal. What helped me for feeling this way is a book called “the gap and the gain” by Ben and Dan. I also follow a lot of entrepreneurs like Garyvee and Alex Hormozi. What I like Garyvee is that he talks about content and why it’s important. What I like about Alex is when he explains about leverage. Of course these is what helping me currently to push forward. It’s really easy to be drained when having a family, finances, what is working and is not, etc. as you were saying maybe hiring another person; to build that leverage and give trust to another person is tough, but it might be worth trying out things and see if it works. Lastly, we all need breaks. This content world is exhausting and freaking hard because the moment of stopping, could be challenging with the algorithm system with KZbin or other platforms. But besides that, I believe that you have an engaging following so I certainly believe that if you take a break, most will respect that. Take care Freddie

As a gamedev generalist i have lots of "leftovers" i've wanted to assemble into a single released game eventually and this thing makes it look not just like doing something that i want the way i want, but even make some money off it. I've got some videos i can generally call successful(having around 80 followers and 1k+ views without any advertising or promotion) and at this point it seems doable. And at the end - more reasonable than making never ending b2b client-based projects that leave me extremely burned out and feeling surrounded by some brainless antropomorphic.. creatures.

hey, i'm pretty knew to the channel, i always loved your content but to be true i always thought that your youtube channel was kind of slowing you down from achieving your best in game dev since it's really time consumming and i'm not gonna lie even if there will be a lot less video on the channel i'm really excited to see what you're gonne be able to do in the next year into this black hole. you got to find the eye of the tiger back. getting back to the root. I found out about David RB a while back, was super disappointed when I realized that game was no longer being made... shame all around

Great video. My game has potential but gosh marketing and making youtube videos would be taking too much of my development time. As a 30yr with 2 kids, my time is fairly limited 😅

I don’t think Jonas is stopping any time soon. I'm fairly certain he hit "escape violocity" with his previous game Will You Snail and he always seemed to enjoy making KZbin videos as much as making games

maybe being youtuber is more exhausting than being a game developer, since gamedev is more profitable

It may also be beneficial for new game dev youtubers who are just starting but they can't success because of the high competition from the oldest game dev youtubers who already have all the audience, so it could be like a cycle, when old retire and let the young once shine.

I can understand the burnout have not finished making my first commercial game while also working on my 3 shitty games but being a solo dev cause no money for a team can get you burnt out

Also the David RB allegations pissed me off, as I had really wanted to play his game, and sincerely hope he comes back to finish what he started.

I wish my game Fursan al-Aqsa reached all the success these games reached, and as so I wish my game's KZbin Channel reached all these followers. I know that game development may be exhausting, just like any other job, but, I think whenever you have a great reason behind developing a game (like mine reasons), not just about the financial part of it, or not just your love for games, I think whenever you have a greater aim in your game, this helps you to overcome every hardship in your way...

For me "burn out" is a feeling that comes from a place where I question. "Is this thing that I'm doing the right thing to do?" I think things like "one day" I'll be going to GDC, I'll know enough about a topic to be able to speak about it. One day. I'll have enough money to take time off and enjoy my hobbies, pay for more expensive healthier food, have free time to exercise, read, go to a conference or lecture. It's hard to keep working on ANYTHING if you constantly question the path you're on. Something that I've recently changed and has been incredibly helpful is confirming my path rather than question it. I've cut expenses where I can and demand myself to purchase the healthier food, blocked out time for excise and reading regardless of my work schedule. I've started shaping my life into the one I would have "one day" right now. Doing so I've found myself being more productive and more invested in my current project and less exhausted by it.

Great video. I think you should record what you want to record and pay someone to edit/run your youtube channel. Perhals a close friend or something. Then you can still take in the revenue from YT and open up a really great financial opportunity for someone who cares about the same things and who can share the same passions. It'll take the load off your shoulders and allow you to focus solely on unity with maybe a few things here and there whenever you want that are youtube related.

Dani also got burnt out, to be added, he's receiving hates and death threats towards his game "Karlson" for it takes so long to be released. He said he's into so much pressure because now people expect too much for that game, what if it doesn't meet the hype and expectations when he finally released it?". I understand the feeling of this, as a learning gamedev(as a hobby but u know maybe someday...) It is really exhausting. I know for my self that I love to develop, I love to code, I love to make games and stuffs but in my current state, it made me super unhealthy, burnt out, and tired.
