In one video I heard you talking of slot cars. I had this hobby for some time, late 60s. I was not rich and that hobby, at least here in Italy, was for rich sons of rich people. But I had a father that run an electromechanic shop, so I grew among electric motors, copper wire, lathes, hydraulic press... So I managed to tune up my mabuchi motors with all the gauges of copper wire my father had in the shop. The first car I had was made by Cox, it was a sidewinder d36 motor with a Porsche Carrera body. Then Cox started to sell the Cucaracha, with a d16 motor, but the best was to fit into it a d26 motor and then get the magnets closer to the rotor, take away some turns of copper from the bobbins or rewind them, then changing the anticipation of the collector. I didn't had enough money for the Cucaracha but I bought an Italian version which was called miniA. But any way, do you remember that a sort of oil that was used to increase the contact of tires on the surface of the track? It has a marvelous scent, that I have all life searched for... It's something similar to Chinese tiger balm. Anyway, just wanted to share my memories of slot cars, and obviously, they where 1/24 scale, 1/32 was for little childrens 🤗

The boutique pedal business bores me to tears, being driven mostly by clones and clones of clones, and a whole lot of mojo nonsense. Cool hearing about the LM386. I was a big fan of it as a building block, mostly because I'm lazy. Haven't seen the Reverb movie, but there was a video on youtube a couple years back which was kind of interesting. Can't remember the name of it, unfortunately, but it touched on the business end of gear, and the garage nature of so many boutique operations. I don't know who put it together, but it was interesting and kind of laid back.

I have a Blog ...Stomp Box Steals ...I have reviewed over 1600 pedals. I have a following of 466,000 so over the last 5 years I have constantly chased the history of pedals and tried to establish rapport with as many independent builders as I could to share their stories on my site and to know what I am listening to. I swear every month there are 3 or 4 more Tube Screamers being sold as a new pedal that they claim has reinvented the wheel. lol After seeing exerts and commentaries of the pedal movie I am convinced it is an infomercial for Reverb. So what you have said does not surprise me. Even most of the best of the small manufacturers are not making the best pedals. I have no problem with makers basing a product on basic and excellent ideas that are decades old. We would all be driving model T Fords if that had not happened. But what we are getting is primarily inferior not better. Have they no ears???

I haven't watched the movie yet, I'm waiting for an evening free of other stresses and distractions to sit down and watch it. But I was listening to Brian Wampler's podcast the other day and they made a particular comment of the movie showing how instrumental you were to the birth of the boutique pedal industry. It's hard to see anything that involves yourself without fixating on all the things you wish had come out better, but (noting again that I haven't seen the movie yet) if their comments are anything to go by, the Pedal Movie must do a pretty good job of giving you some of the recognition you deserve.

Fran, I would strongly suggest that if you need boutique-level manufacturing, you should probably check with Darkplace Mfg. In Portland, OR. They've got extensive experience in small-run music electronics manufacturing, having done projects for numerous pedal and synth companies over the years, and can handle the entire fab process from boards to finished product. In other words, exactly what you're looking for according to this clip. They can even handle distribution. Seems like a good match to me!

I feel you on this one Fran. A lot of big brands don't even do their development in house, but hire individuals to do this. It's extremely sad that these very talented makers/engineers never get the credits for something that is sometimes sold by the thousands or even millions. In a lot of cases these companies don't even want you to mention you made the design for them (NDA bs and such) In a personal case this lead to very unfortunate and awkward situation were people doubt your skills and expertise, yet brag about a brand you did al the research and development for back in the day. Go figure.

@CrimFerret 3 жыл бұрын
Because the cost in money and, more importantly, time to do it would be even more ludicrous. Especially as high as Fran's standards for quality are. And she just stated she doesn't want to do manufacturing again. It would be great if an established maker would license her designs and product names, but as she said, it's easier for them to reverse engineer them, change them just enough to make it hard to prove, and not pay her a cent.
@tbelding
@tbelding 3 жыл бұрын
@@CrimFerret - The point here is that if she does a SINGLE pedal construction, that's not the same as getting back into manufacturing. You can get prototyping done pretty darned cheaply to get two or three cases, etc. As for the time to do it, that's part of the doing the videos already. She'd be getting paid for the video, she'd be getting paid for the pedal (by auctioning it off), and she'd be getting paid by having extra 'credit' for showing the full history behind the original construction - using the documentation she is the only one that has. (including prototypes)
@CrimFerret
@CrimFerret 3 жыл бұрын
@@tbelding You don't understand. The tooling costs to do the PC board, casting for the body of the pedal, the color mixing and application of the finish layers are the same whether doing one or one thousand. And sure, one could do a 3d printed prototype pedal body and a home made PCB to hold the components, but that's not a product that could be used in the real world and I'm darn sure Fran wouldn't anything like that out into the wild with her name on it.
@tbelding
@tbelding 3 жыл бұрын
@@CrimFerret - _what_ tooling costs to do the PCB board? This isn't 15 years ago, where you had to do enormous orders of boards, after sending out layouts to people, or mask off your own boards. Check on bigclivedotcom and you'll find him talking about getting the boards done. You do the layout in one of many programs, send it off, and there's usually a minimum order (10, or 20) and it works out to just a few dollars. It's a far cry from when my family had to buy 20 boards at a time, and each board cost over $30, for a single sided board. For the pedal, you can do the same thing. There are prototype shops that will happily do a sintered body (and she can get the CAD drawing done by asking someone to 3d-scan one of her old units), and if you did a run of 10 (same as the boards), the cost comes way down. No, it's not the same as getting a fully tooled CNC milled body, but it'll be fine for anyone other than a sumo wrestler practicing his clog dancing. Labels? Same thing. It might require a full roll to be printed, but that's still not an extreme cost (I've been looking into getting labels I can put on equipment.) I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt that you haven't had to be involved in the prototyping industry for a while, but it has radically changed. Before you jump in that sintering isn't strong enough, they make the gears for grinders and other power tools out of sintered steel, rather than cut. If you think someone's foot will be more abusive than a 1/2 horsepower grinder motor.... well, I don't want to meet the person with that foot.

Their Columbus to your Magellan, books are better anyways. I built a pedal of sorts recently; its a straight key for morse code made from a mouse trap, a cheap function generator (considered homebrew but couldn't pass the deal), a CW decoder, a lil single mosfet amp on a 2w speaker with line in and out all through a switchboard mounted to legos, couple rheostats (line in, amp gain) 18 AA's (16 for main, 2 for leds which fit perfectly in legos) or 12v line in, all in a box, lotta hot glue, spaghetti of wires. It'd be for practicing or txing morse in a audio format (like on FRS/GMRS) in a nice compact setup with tone modulation or for recieving and decoding. If I ever make a video or something I'll post it roundabouts 👍

never say never...I hate pedals since every one I've ever owned broke down from stomping on it, usually during gigs. I'd never heard of Frantone until I stumbled onto your YT channel..now I want one

Hey I have a unrelated question I would like to ask. I hope I'm not being rude or anything but I'm just a music gear nerd and wanted to ask if you have any artifacts from the legendary Sigma Sound in Philly! I've been getting into classic soul funk and disco and am falling in love with the sound of Philly. I apologize for such a random question and it's a long shot but I just want to geek out about Sigma Sound!

Sad they didn't ask you about the inventions and contributions and others taken the credit for your work. Maybe do your version of the pedal movie? Would love to interview and get it out on YT😃

Sitting here trying to figure out the lm386 thing. How do you make them non-linear? Aren't they like 125mW or 250 with 5% thd at max output? Is it used to overdrive the power amp or something?

Wow I didn't know it was you who came up with the DPDT true bypass plus led. Huge respect. Do you mean the bipolar trans switching off the led using the volume pot's earth connection? I have vague memories of seeing this in a rat pedal... Did ProCo steal your idea? PS: I love your channel. Thanks for the videos!

They did, though it was a late 70s model (when they swapped out the 4 transistors for a pair of opamps).

Hey Fran, there are some interesting companies making electronic music devices in Germany. To be more pricise in the "Musikwinkel" which means something like the music corner. Have a look for Vermona (they make synthesizers, effects and modules, the brand name is well known) or GEWA (on their website you'll find electric guitars, electric pianos and various audio equipment there). These companies could possibly manufacture your pedals and market them in Europe.

It's a tough world out there Fran and I know where you are coming from. Yup, it's money money money for sure and I have no real advice because I'm working in the field of Hi-Fi and looking out for the sharks! I don't know how the USA trademark/patent laws work there but it's never too late to take out something to protect your ideas? I love music and that what drives me and what you do on Fran-Lab is amazing and your ideas are inspirational. I remember Joe Meek and he made no money and yet others did, but neither did Tesla nor Einstein and you never know? Love your outro music. Oh, greetings from London UK.

Get a few viewers such as myself to help aid in production of your designs. Its a shame to see an innovator of iconic pedals sort of lose interest in their own beautiful creations. You deserve far more credit than has been given.

Innovators rarely get their dues. They tend to go to the business savvy folks who scoop up ideas :( I was give an early 70s big muff in about 1990 and sold it for silly money after grunge landed along with my Boss Stereo Chorus and Blues pedals when it tunprned out lots of showgazers used them. I said to a buddy at work just before covid hit I wish I hadn't partied that money away and had bought a couple of Klons instead and kept them in a box until now :) they cost so much at the time I thought anyone buying them was buying a boat anchor money would want and stuck with overdrive from an old tokai pedal

It's up to the industry? No. It's up to you. Don't wait for opportunity to knock, 'cause if it does, by the time it does it will be too late. If you want it to happen, you have to make it happen.

If a movie came out and there is a lot of hype wouldn't it be a good idea to do a kickstarter or something and have them manufactured by some people you like , I assume that would not be a insane risk to yourself and you could get them built to whatever standards and with whatever features you like

Honestly, if you do make handmade stompboxes. It would sell with the price you want like the Klon. You should build a small batch to test the waters....
