I appeared on an early 80's episode of Rainbow where I impersonated Geofrrey Zippy George and Bungle. Many years later I worked with him in a panto in Woking. He was a talented professional performer and a really nice man and always fun to spend time with. I was very sad to hear of his passing. A real TV icon and is sadly missed. RIP Geoffrey ❤️

yea he was obviously quite a charismatic person that could of easily appeared in a few episodes of EastEnders or something like that now and again, I don't really buy in to the whole ' typecast' scenario, if you only ever play one TV role without a Chance of anything else then that's bound to happen.

Geoffrey was a lovely man. I used to see him quite regularly in the early 90s as I was on my morning commute to uni, and he’d always stop and chat with me. A genuinely missed person and a bit of a legend.

I'm not convinced that he lost his money. The video said he spent time between homes in England and Spain! Working in a supermarket or a as cab driver isn't a fall from grace - maybe he just likes to keep busy and do something, rather than sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring. And fair play to him. There's nothing wrong with that.
@michaelking9818

Absolutely right. When people are famous and in the limelight, there are countless examples of those that fall from grace i.e., they lose their popularity, relevance or purpose, that sit around desperate for the phone to ring offering new roles/fame, rather than accept life for what it is. The sensible ones are those that keep their phone on standby, while getting on in another form of work, whatever it is, and if that phone doesn't ring again, well they've got a perfectly adequate form of regular income coming in to pay the bills. It doesn't sound like he lost all of his money at all - maintaining 2 properties suggests to me he had been very astute with his money and finances.
@Jez1963UK
@Jez1963UK Ай бұрын
You couldn't be more right, and you describe me to a tee. I got a job stacking shelves because I was stuck indoors waiting for the phone to ring and it was seriously affecting my health, both mental and physical. The best decision I ever made (and I really mean that). I love it. It's brainless and gives you a purpose, keeps you fit and keeps you sane. Meet lots of nice customers and being useful to my community.

My brother became Geoffrey's neighbour for a short while because his partner's grandmother had left her her house after she passed away, so they moved in for while until they decided what to do with it. One day the door bell rang and my brother was surprised to see Geoffrey from Rainbow standing there and introducing himself as his neighbour. He asked if my brother minded whether he cut the branches off a very large tree in my brother's garden that were overhanging on to his property. My brother told him he could cut off as much as he wanted as the tree really needed removing altogether. Geoffrey then said if my brother wouldn't mind , he would gladly pay for a tree surgeon to remove the tree completely ! My brother agreed and true to his word, Geoffrey paid to have my brother's tree removed. My brother said that Geoffrey was EXACTLY how you would imagine him to be. A true Gentleman and a neighbour everyone would want . But one thing above all that stuck in my brother's mind more than 34 years later, was Geoffrey's "Pixie Boots" that he wore ! Although my brother only lived there for a few months, he was gutted when he found out he'd passed.

Sometimes life doens't always work out quite like we planned but despite what happened he left an indelibale mark on so many people's lives. I rememeber watching it in the mid to late 70s as a young child when i would go to my Nan's house for lunch every weekday while at school. It's the whimsy and dedication of the show and Hayes' contributions that made it what it was. He might not have ever been a mega star but there's no denying he holds a special place in the hearts of millions of UK adults today.

That's a surprisingly accurate account. Many of these conditions were either unknown of at the time or taboo. These days the inclusion of people living on the spectrum is done in such a intentional way that seems insincere and often quite shameless. Rainbow always seemed to be unconscious of the existence of neurodiversity or people with different sexual orientations or transgender etc and just accepted everyone as fellow human beings who were no better or worse than them. No singling out of minorities, no 'token' characters and quotas, no shameless virtue signalling attempts. Just a very open and natural projection of society. Gotta give credit where it's due. I should add that i have it in good authority that most of the cast and crew were all shagging each other behind the scenes for most of the time the show ran.

For example: George:- "I want to be a hairdresser, when I grow up". Zippy (his head resting on his hand, looking at George):- "Well that figures.....". Zippy (watching Jeffery & Bungle attempting to assemble a bunk bed):- "Do you want the DISTRUCTIONS, Jeffery??". Jeffery:- "Don't you mean INSTRUCTIONS, Zippy??". A big part of many of our young lives. So sad to learn that times were tough for him in his last days. Along with Rod, Jane and Freddie, Rainbow and the Sooty Show were by far my childhood favourites in the 80's.

I used to see him at my local railway station in the mid 90's; he still wore brightly coloured clothes on the morning commute! Have to admit that i was a little saddened to see him there, seemed so out of place for a recognisable tv regular. There was a Sainsbury's where I grew up so perhaps that was the one where he worked. Thanks for entertaining us, Geoffrey!

He may have been popular but it was mainly children and mothers who liked him. He was always outshone by the puppets. Who were also asked to go on other shows. Where as he didnt really get asked to on other shows. He is a generational presenter who bought joy to children throughout the 70s and early 80s. Thank you Jeffrey Hayes and the Rainbow team for making my early years of life fun and happy.

I simply cannot conceive how you do 20 years on TV and come out of it skint at the end? Answer: He wasn't skint, he just _wanted to WORK!_ - Good for him.

Yeah a great man , loved by many who saw him on Rainbow! Probably more famous and much more respected then a politician. His life is like many , gradually fading away after you leave your lifelong career. Sorry to hear of his passing but what a legend RIP Geoffrey

I loved Rainbow as a kid, remembered coming home on playgroup and watching it. When Freddy replaced Roger i was confused how different the third person looked. I still watched it when started school and often skived off and watched it at lunchtime

Those of us of a certain age, have his voice in our heads. His tone, and inflections are part of our own childhood. All those subtle life lessons and how he dealt with Zippy, was always fair but firm. He certainly painted our worlds with a rainbow.

During a home economics lesson in the early 90s, our regular teacher was away. The supply teacher put the TV on to watch a video. In between rewinding the VHS cassette, the Rainbow theme tune came on. Everyone started singing it - you could say with a lot of teenagers with broken voices singing - it was reminiscent of the Gremlins 'Snow White' cinema scene! 🌈🎶
