It would be one thing if they had changed Indys attire to reflect a change in his style as he aged,as one normally does,but they decided to "keep the look the same" and if that is the appearance you are going for,then get it right,or don't do it at all.Great video once again.

Right. The different coloured shirt, _drastically_ different coloured trousers, and the bag having a totally different strap & playing schizophrenic musical chairs on his body...it was atrocious. Even in my non-cartoonish life, I'm still rocking the same boots, wallet chain, jacket, etc. that I've had for a very long time. If I had a quintessential adventure outfit, you bet it would stay the same. So anytime I need to replace something, I'm getting the same style item. But I hear ya man on what you were saying regarding your dad's uniform. It's still awesome Harrison is in the shape they are. I know/have known plenty of guys a good bit younger than them that seem like they're decades older than Ford. @@planetofsoundpodcast9859 I think I´ve not explained myself well. Yes, Indy dressed properly for every situation in the other movies. His clothes were just his clothes. The hat, whip and jacket became iconic because those are the clothes he was wearing in his adventures. But in "Indy V" it was the first time that his clothes were featured like a kind of hero´s uniform. In the train, when he is disguised as a nazi officer, we see his clothes inside a bag, and when he starts doing his "hero things" he changes to his "hero clothes". The same thing happens when he enters that hotel (or was it a restaurant? I forgot) in Morocco. Why is he wearing those clothes? It´s a bit ridiculous (as said in the video).
@planetofsoundpodcast98594 ай бұрын
I'm assuming that before Indy shot the German soldier and took his clothes in the prologue, that he was wearing his adventure clothes, as he was on an adventure with Basil to find the lance. So he shoots the soldier, takes his uniform, heads into the castle, Basil takes Indy's gear and puts it in his bag and waits in the woods. Doesn't seem that implausible. As for why he wears it in Morroco, why not? He hasn't been adventuring for over a decade, Sallah brings his adventure clothes for Indy, hoping the old fire in his friend will reignite. And yes, adventure does begin to stir inside Indy on his way to reclaim the Dial. So he puts adventure clothes on. I guess the "silly thing" if you want to find one is that for half his life at least he has specific clothes he wears when he goes adventuring.

Short story - I was outside Bernie Pollack's office (Bernie was Ford's personal designer) when he was prepping for Crystal Skull when who should appear but Peter Botwright (of Wested Leather) all the way from England. Mr. Botwright had come with jackets in hand to show what he had made for the previous films, but Bernie somewhat unceremoniously dismissed him out of hand, telling him he had his own guy to make the jackets. Mr. Botright was stunned and all I could do was shrug and look sympathetic. A lot of these decisions come down to the peculiar whims of the costume designer - and they ARE whims without any discernable rhyme or reason. Add to that the fact that big stars like Ford will not let you dress them to make them look their best and this is what you get.

Glad I'm not the only one with the same feelings on Indy's classic look throughout the film series. When I first watched the "making of" Documentary in the first DVD box-set released in the decade of the 2000s, the costume designer for Raiders revealed the logic and care that went into Indy's clothes and how it was featured in the film, it gave the impression of an adventurous man who practically lived in his clothes and that his hat was very much beloved. In my eyes, Indiana Jones looked natural in Raiders of the Lost Ark, but in the subsequent films afterwards, he's wearing a costume. And yes, the Raiders Hat IS the Best and True version of Classic Fedora.

Last night, I watched Raiders for the 300th time -I'm old enough to have see it on the theater back in 81) and I noticed two moments were Indy wears his satchel over the right shoulder. First, just at the begin of the movie (just when editor Michael Khan is anounced in the credits). The whip is also on his right. It looks like they flipped the image in order to keep the characters "going to the right of the screen" on his walk thru the jungle. The other moment is when Indy borrows the horse to pursuit the truck with the Ark. This time the satchel is on the right, and the whip on the left. However, the satchel goes back to the left during the chasing scene. On the other hand, I completely agree that the Raiders look, hat and whip are the best. Just a small easter egg: in the Disney Plus documentary about Indy and Harrison Ford, there's a still image during the shooting of the Raven. Harrison Ford is not wearing the leather jacket. However, he's wearing a shoulder gun holster. I have never notice during the movie that Indy is wearing one.
@s.philRBW9 ай бұрын
It bears repeating. As for myself, in the early days, I never assumed that the outfit was supposed to look the same, given the wear and tear that had to be part of his life, but of course that was before they made the hat part of his origin. For one story, at least.
@ezchannel4936 ай бұрын
I like that you bring up the gun. It triggered me throughout the whole movie especially at the beginning of the movie when he was younger. You also brought up the time period being post war, but they could have made an Indiana Jones signature vertical shoulder holster for that movie or even just have him carry it in his satchel or jacket pocket. If they really did want him to lose the gun for the plot, he could have lost it like in Temple of Doom or have it taken like in Crystal Skull and it would make sense.

Great video, and I loved the full length one as well. I have to say, on a personal level, I don't mind the slight tweaks to his costume over the years, as long as they don't defy logic and common sense. (As some of them clearly do, like the placement of the satchel) Don't forget, he leads a hard life, so some shirts, jackets, and hats are going to be worn out over the years. I don't have any clothes that I owned ten years ago, let alone since 1981, and I'm not an adventurous explorer! I love the franchise and was very disappointed by the last instalment, but not because of Indy's outfit. Incidentally, if you look at the still from Raiders at 4:32 and compare it with your Raiders outfit at the end, your whip and holster look distinctly more orange. Is Indy's just more weathered?

I happen to love the gags about his classic outfit in the other movies, and I even like that each film's look has it's own subtle differences (although the Raiders hat really is unbeatable). But your points about the lack of care in DoD's look are spot on. One thing you didn't touch on, but really bugs me: for some reason, they kind of switched the color hues of the shirt and pants. The shirt now goes towards a yellowish regular khaki tone, while the pants are almost grey... even the hat ribbon is the same tone as the hat felt, losing that contrast between a brown hat and an almost black ribbon. Anyway, great video, specially for those of us who pay attention to that kind of stuff.

That's a really cool green variation of the shirt at the beginning of the video. I would not mind getting one of them. Attention to detail is always important. The satchel strap under the jacket is something that those making the new Indiana Jones game also seem to have missed as well going by what was seen in the recent trailer for it. It is all the more bizarre when the game attempts to recreate that scene from behind him at the beginning of Raiders. How did they miss that the strap was under the jacket? As the game is set between Raiders and Last Crusade it makes no sense why Indy would wear the satchel strap over the jacket. Then again it never made any sense why he would ever wear it over the jacket in any of the later movies either. It is pretty sad that Harrison Ford himself never seemed to have pointed out this either when wearing the outfit in the later movies. I always liked the look of the jacket in Raiders and Temple of Doom as it looked like it had been lived in for many years where as in Last Crusade and Kingdom it was a lot puffier and like something that had just been bought off the shelf and weathered a bit. It was not shaped to his body and that jacket should be like a second skin on him. It also looked slightly oversized on him in Raiders which it never did in any of the other movies.
@josephkelly95149 ай бұрын
I never felt it was oversized in Raiders. It was just a tight fit but not too tight. In the other ones it looked a little looser but look how many times costumes change in movies. Take for instance Friday the 13th. I know it's a low budget horror movie but the mask and look of Jason changed with each subsequent film. The same with Michael Myers mask. I liked The Dial Of Destiny but I never understood why they made the whip black just very odd. Great video by the way. Love the attention to detail.

I know you said no headcanon, but I just figured it was never supposed to be taken as one set of clothes throughout the entire span of the movies. Indy gets the crap beat out of him in his adventures and he probably goes through clothes constantly. We see how destroyed his clothes get in Temple of Doom and then they're brand new again in Raiders. And there's no hole in his jacket in Last Crusade from where he gets shot in the arm during the truck chase in Raiders. The guy probably goes through clothes all the time and maybe sometimes can't find the exact same stuff, especially if he's in different countries and all, so he just finds something close. Even the hat. Getting them wet all the time like does really kinda ruins hats like those so he probably went through a few of those too. Just the way always kinda thought of it. Good video though. I obsessively researched which jacket to get before I finally decided on the Todd's Costumes one because it looked the most like the Raiders jacket and it's my favorite one so I noticed the differences in the different movie costumes too lol.

Always knew there was something about Indy's hat in Raiders... It's edges looked sharp and lighter than in the sequels. Also missed the gloves, but I guess Indy only wears it on excavations, which he never did after Raiders. With that said, I think Temple of Doom had the 2nd best take on the costume. Sure the jacket draped and the whip was all over the place, but it really fits in the atmosphere of the movie. It's almost like Fred C. Dobbs from "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (1948). Raiders went for a more clean, confident look, Temple of Doom went in a more deliberately sloppy direction, being the only movie where his attire gets absolutely trashed. It really brings out how much Indy was struggling through the 2nd half of the movie.

I just assumed that the type of jacket indy wore was available in different cuts , lengths etc. He owns several and used them all from time to time. I personally have 5 jackets i wear to work and they are all the same size and exactly rhe same jacket. Just different colors and none fit exaclty the same. This applys tonthe pants/shirt/shoes/holster. The hat is a different story. At any rate i dont think about it too much. Its his look. Sloppy or not it's still rhe same general look...

For Last Crusade, speculation on my part, he may have lost it aboard the Vasquez de Coronado while retrieving the Cross of Coronado. As for the different shirt in Dial of Destiny, 25 years have passed since we last see the shirt in 1944. Clothing like shirts and pants don't last like leather jackets do. Especially after repeated use the way Jones did. And I don't know what it was like back in 69 when the movie took place, but I know I can't walk into a walmart and buy a shirt style from 1999.

Why did I watch this??? Damn I wasn’t this depressed since that dial of nonsense’s credits rolled… I agree with everything… pointed out some of these details myself to my wife… she looked at me weirdly 😂

I like the Raiders look best, too-but I feel like Indy having that exact shirt on 50 years later would raise more questions than it answers. I really enjoy (most of) the variations. 🤷♂️

Jesus, dude. He's wearing the same jacket, hat, and pants and shoes too. You're not calling that out! Try again with your rationale.

I have watched your Indy 5 review multiple times in the background. I actually listened to it the other night while plaiting a nylon bullwhip lol It's very well done. Like you I was extremely bothered by the fact that his satchel strap is over the jacket in the new game...

I'm most surprised Diznee let Indy wear leather.

I completely agree with you my thoughts on the shoulder bag I was wondering if he injured himself on the shoulder and that’s why they replace the bag on the other side but I completely agree with your video great job thank you

Nailed it. The Raiders costume is perfect. The subsequent films are an ever degrading facsimile of the original. I always preferred the colour of the last crusade pants is my only concession, but not enough to change the Raiders costume

I agree dial of destiny is his worst look but I don’t think his gear gets worse as the series goes on. I think his outfit from Last Crusade is the best it was in all 5 movies. I don’t know why but I really like the tan web belt and visible snaps for the storm flap on his jacket. Then, if you’re into cosplay, you can put the tie on. I also like his hat (not the short brimmed one used in some scenes) with the more standard crown but it’s pretty similar to the one in temple and crystal skull. Destiny looks like it’s made out of a darker felt. I think the gap between “Raiders” and the “Indiana Jones” movies is best represented with his costume. The unique hat, bag strap leather color and buckle, the color of his holster and bullwhip, gloves and smith and Wesson all scream Raiders. Then the following 3 have larger darker holsters and different satchel straps and buckles. Along with the less unique crown and standard brim on his hat.

one main things that perturbed me was the setting of Dial in the 60s. With Harrisons Age it should be been late 70s or early 80s. Imagine Indy in the disco era! Fighting neo Nazis on the disco floor.

Did anyone else think that Indy started wearing his satchel strap outside his jacket post-Last Crusade because of how it nearly got him killed during the tank chase where he was dangling from the turret and couldn't slide out of it? Either way though, I'm absolutely not in favor of him wearing the satchel strap outside the jacket, it really does affect the look of the outfit overall. Unfortunately, the new upcoming Indy game continues this trend, ugh...

I think the hat problems stem from the fact that he was supposed to lose it in Raiders and thus it didn’t matter if he had the same one in Temple of Doom but by The Last Crusade the hat was synonymous with Indy so it was established as something he’d always had in that film, which led to this inconsistency.

i loved the bit of your Indy 5 review that discussed how the costume has become more sloppy over time. It was especially galling that they didn't even give Indy his gun in the opening of Indy 5.

That and they made him afraid of bugs were 2 weird choices that didn’t feel in character to me

Attention to detail and care notwithstanding, would you say the reason why the leather jacket got bigger and the rest of his wardrobe fitting him differently is due to Harrison Ford's body changing as the years went on? While still looking like himself from 1981 to 1989, Ford does physically look a bit different in terms of age and body mass. He will look drastically different in 2008, more so in 2022-23.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention the bullet cut on his left side of his jacket that he gets in that flashback in DOD on the train in 1944. Then he has it again (same jacket) in the rest of the film in 1969. However he doesn't have the bullet cut in Krystal skull on his jacket despite it taking place before DOD. Yeah, you could say it's a different jacket but still just figured I'd mention it.

I always just figured that Indy had a few different jackets of the same style and slightly different lengths. And just switch them out every so often.

As someone who dabbles in 3d modeling I've seen over the years what happens if a modeler gets a period costume wrong. Especially if its a military uniform. You're going to hear from people including veterans. Its not enough to guess or assume, you've got to approximate.

Spot on. Raiders got the outfit right to perfection. For me, TOD kind of got away with its differences probably because of how ripped up it all ends up looking anyway. But Last Crusade was the first one that really jarred me, particularly the addition of a tie to his adventure gear. To quote Arnie in Predator, "what's this fucking tie business?"
