@@PrimeSportsNetwork I know what the movie was attempting to do... and it was good until the end when m night ruined it with such a laughable ending. So, highly advanced aliens run around a new planet completely naked, then get trapped in a kitchen closet, and never at any point realized most of the planet they are invading is covered in a substance that is deadly to them..right.. only a simpleton rube would be able to maintain cinematic suspension of disbelief through that. I can understand why. He was being hyped up as the next Alfred Hitchcock. The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable were under his belt. Both movies had a very serious tone, and the plots were pretty strong (i.e., there weren't many blaring plot holes). Signs took a bit of a different direction. It had it's share of silly scenes and dialogue. The water thing was arguably a pretty big plot hole. It feels pretty different from his first two films in terms of it's "tone". Mind you, I LOVED Signs. But I can see why there was criticism. Critics had set VERY high expectations for Shyamalan, and built him up as the next big thing in cinema, and that resulted in expectations that almost inevitably would lead to disappointment.

I wish I could remember where I read it, but I saw someone post this theory in response to water-weakness criticism: Survival training. Just like we do with our military, the aliens were conducting exercises in a hostile environment without protective gear or weapons. Remember, after they leave, it's reported on the radio that the aliens snatched up some humans before leaving. So, look at it as, "Your orders are to deploy into a hostile environment with no protection, survive for X number of hours, grab samples of local lifeforms, and bug out." And, if they were planning a bigger invasion to follow, it makes more sense that they would be doing survival training at that point. The explanation worked for me.

This should be an example in film school along with some of the other examples used in this review. Its really hard to pick this apart and find real liget issues with the film. I do not share this across most and/or all of his films but this is a great one where Knock at the Cabin is probably the cleanist looking movie with about the quality of Troll 2, or that really bad Jeepers Creepers: Reborn and/or the newest Hellraiser movie, where the movies have a look of quality but are actually very very poorly done. Night is hit/miss these days but Signs is of high quality storytelling.
