What happened to Magic the Gathering? It became a soulless, min/max'ed profit engine for Hasbro.
@APolishedTurd15 күн бұрын
Everything else other than the min maxed comment I can agree with to at least some degree. Especially the profit engine part. But even then I mostly buy singles and only rarely buy packs so I’m not as much affected by it. The profit engineering comes from collector packs etc and I’m just buying the singles from other people chasing cards in the packs. But min maxing happens no matter what when something becomes popular. That’s a player problem. Even if you make every card ever objectively “bad” people will still find the better of the bad cards and min max whatever situation or state the game is in. Unless there’s some sort of other meaning to min maxing here.

Really looking forward to it! Update since i got a few replies: I went back on Friday with a friend. I used the Fallout Hail Caesar deck. We played as a 4 group. I was against a Wolverine, Indominus Rex and some cat dog thing that i can't recall. The Wolverine deck was my friend learning also. She borrowed a deck at the store to try. It was a ton of fun and great to meet new people. Lots of players came to greet and welcome us. People got their binders out and showed us lots of cool cards. Something about secret layers or something they looked awesome. I will be returning to play more! :) thank you for all kind comments!

As a 30+ year player i have enough cards. The power creep of the new sets just doesn't feel like the same game anymore. That and i don't get out anywhere as much these days so not even doing any trading. The secondary trading (Bartering) market was always one of the main reasons why the game has been so popular. Also saving money to maybe ever buying a house. So for me new cards just aren't any sort of priority. Just some random thoughts for what they are worth.

@linoeleven17 күн бұрын
@@DuraheLL What's constructed mean? New player, and I'm only doing standard on Arena. Ty!
@DuraheLL16 күн бұрын
@@linoeleven Hi man! I will try and explain :) Constructed pretty much means that you "construct" your deck from a wide pool of all cards available. If you play constructed, you have the possibility to pick ANY cards you like, from the standard legal sets. And can pick up to 4 copies of each for your deck. When you play "limited" for example, you randomly gain cards for your deck and cannot precisely pick everything for your deck. I have since long gotten tired of constructed and think it is far from the best experience for magic. If you draft for example, you get together a bunch of players, each open a pack (booster pack containing 14 cards) pick a card you like then pass the remaining cards to the next player in line. Do this until all cards are picked. Open another pack, do the same but change direction you pass. Open the final 3rd pack and change direction again. This way, you still pick the cards, but from a limited pool. Also if you draft from a cube (pre-constructed pile of cards) it's "semi-constructed" format, you randomly pick cards to play each time but from a pre crafted card pool. Magic, to me is extremely degenerate in constructed formats. You put a card down, someone play removal, removal removal removal, or you lose out of nowhere when cards trigger infinite combos making you lose on the spot. The games are extremely one sided a lot of the time and rarely really fun. Is it EVER fun to play against a control deck for example? An aggro deck? Never ever. The amounts of BS you encounter is mind boggling how anyone can enjoy it xD Sure, you can make just as equally toxic decks, but who ever thought it was fun chasing down 4 copies of "staples" and cards that you need that are either hard to come by or really expensive? finding limited formats and making them semi-constructed is where magic shine. Having to make do with un-optimal cards, commons and strategies on the fly is great fun and the spirit of the game in it's design.
@linoeleven16 күн бұрын
@@DuraheLL That does sound better. Been a little obsessed for the last month or two since I started playing... and it has been pretty daunting to always feel so outgunned in standard Arena. On the flip side, I know I piss off a lot of opponents because I've been running mono-black with a lot of removal stuff.... they just quit and quit and quit. (I actually never quit even when I'm demolished but that may just be my newb-ness). Now that I'm learning more colors like blue, I'm also noticing that I get paired up a lot with similar decks.... so here we are just throwing out no creatures at all, waiting to blast each other with hidden tricks, but with nothing on the board! You go, no you go, no you go... It's probably time I try the drafts and stuff like that. I showed my little bro the game and he said it feels like you're always playing with the kid on the playground who just makes shit up out of nowhere... "no, you can't hit me cuz I'm invisible!" X-D Thanks a lot for taking the time to explain this to me!
@derekcline95016 күн бұрын
@linoeleven the way it used to work is you draft a new set for a few times on release. You trade some of these cards with friends, crack a few more packs and buy some singles to fill out a Standard deck. Now you play Standard until next set. 5 years later, you have most of a Modern deck or three. If you've been around since the beginning, you have the cards to play Legacy. Each step should be easy/ cheap to enter because you invested in the previous format. Some power creep isn't even an issue. But too much product ruins this model because Standard is too expensive. And Modern Horizons, LotR and commander cards being wildly powerful means Standard is too weak to filter back to older formats. But WotC gonna chase money. So most people just play Commander.
@windellonimajneb110018 күн бұрын
The more I listen to you, the more I grasp your influence on it and the interests you have to get the hye there. What most invest players seem to not see is that for mot of us, investing on a booster box gets our hopes started only for these boxes For someone like you, buying out these boxes is also altering the boxes you are alreay sitting on The calculations are just not the same I am grateful for the incidental benefits that your operations generate, i still need the buy outs to reach the european market too, like the boxes you bought up early December like Theros Beyond Death, Ikoria and so on Unless it gets there too, I'm on the theory that you are more involved than WOTC with these secondary markets sealed swings, and that the singles value debate will prevail, meaning these boxes will not be organic

Disconnecting sealed product from the actual value of the cards inside, creating a new “investment” merely creates a 12-18 month bubble linked to rotation wherein players must buy what they need as singles. Any sealed purchase after that should be considered another type of investment entirely. The fact you and other distributers with a wall of product behind them to become market owner/manipulators and people sell/trade sealed in basically an insular manner creates artifical value. When I see old sets available to open in actual FLGSs for fun, I’ll know the bubble popped.

8:17 Correct me if Im wrong but this example was indeed an example of a terrible investment product. If purchased at $80 and sold at $120 + tax (assuming the order includes shipping), we are talking about barely a gain. TCGPlayer takes 10%, shipping of about 10 bucks, you are stuck with ~$98 (ignoring additional fees, like include time, gas, possible returns, any inconveniences, etc). You took $80 and it became $98 in 8 years, in essence. This is about a 2.5% interest compounded monthly, without taking into account inflation! Completely terrible investment. Your gains have literally has been destroyed by inflation, and overall would have done similar sitting in a high-yield savings acount. Let's not talk about a CD (4.5-5% on average) or S&P 500 (10% on average, 7% with inflation), which leave the gain from this box as nearly non-existent.

Not to come off as agressive but rudy has invested in like 1000 Planechase anthologys, and has more cases of card games no one has heard of, personally I think he does have yugioh (how could he not its easily the 3rd largest TCG) but for some reason just doesn't talk about it, but yeah there is definitely good money to be made in sets, really you can just pick a case of anything, and its nearly guaranteed to increase, yugioh is certainly more volatile than any other card game, cards can go from 300+ to basically worthless over night. but the same can be true of the reverse, cards can go from worthless to 20 plus a copy (or more) considering that yugioh is the only game to not have a standard, anything can be viable, but also it has the largest banlist by a mile.

Why aren't my Doctor Who precon commander decks doing up if we have a good environment?

Hold on, if the price of boxes is going up but thy prices of the cards in those boxes is staying static- that's pretty much the definition of a bubble. Because the card prices don't justify the sealed box prices, so it's an automatic negative return.

I don't know Rudy-Bro... I think your chair's real grade is secretly a BGS: 6.9 ? Anyways, Merry Christmas my dude. 🤙

Well, well. Hard to believe it's been years already since I found an opening in that patreon to get a nice seat. I wish it were a BGS 9.5 or 9.0 but we can't all have that high-end furniture! To more years to come.Here's to us!
