What this means depends on what a person qualifies as rock music. If one’s definition of rock music is a bit more loose, then rock is evolving. If one’s definition of rock is a bit more ridged, it means that rock is dying out. I personally fall into the latter category. It doesn’t mean that i think imagine dragons and bands like them are bad or not talented, I just don’t qualify them as rock
@DuffyLONER646 жыл бұрын

Here's the thing. Imagine Dragons are more of an Alt Pop/Rock band than a true rock band. However rock is not dead! Bands like Arctic Monkeys, Cage the Elephant, Foo Fighters, The Struts, Kaleo, and tons more are still putting out amazing rock music. Rock isn't dead, it's just continuing to change and evolve. While these bands aren't Led Zeppelin, neither was Nirvana. Rock will never stop changing, and rock will never die.
@lucanreynolds9476 жыл бұрын
Royal Blood and Foo Fighters make good rock music...that said, I hate putting genres on everything. Even though it may not sound it, Arctic Monkey's new album (my favourite of the year) is maybe their most 'rock' yet, given the drive the instruments give to the music (especially guitars).

I think hating on Imagine Dragons for being called a "rock" band when they themselves don't define themselves as a rock band is pretty dumb. There was a recent interview with Dan where he basically just said that he makes what he wants to in the moment. Sometimes that's more hip hop influenced, rock influenced, edm influenced. It's just whatever they want to make. For me genres are becoming obsolete. Most bands are blending multiple genres to just make what they want anyways. It's getting too difficult to classify and I think that's awesome for paving the way for new sounds. Also, isn't it interesting that when it comes to reviews music is the least cared about? With movies or video games people hold such a high regard for the reviews they get, but people seem to not really care when it comes to music. They just form their own opinion and enjoy what they want. (No, this doesn't apply to everyone. It's a general statement about a huge majority of people)

I was thinking about your last comment for years. I was thinking asking a similar question like that to CKN or Antony F via email or something. Music reviews get less views and sub's than movie, TV and Gaming channels. I remember reading this article from Metalsucks of all places about why there will be never be another Metallica and he mentioned that music doesn't matter much, especially metal and rock, you can even point this out to hip hop, jazz and actual indie pop. "I’m sorry guys, it’s just the world we live in. It doesn’t. “Kids these days” have a million other ways to spend their time: Facebook, Instagram, video games, sex, drugs, etc. And, to be honest, it’s not just “kids” (I hate that expression when used by industry folk): it’s you and me, too. When was the last time you sat in front of your stereo (if you even have a proper one not in your car!) and listened to an album start to finish? Be honest. That time when you passed out to Dark Side of the Moon after your BBQ doesn’t count. Music has been relegated to background status now for all but a select few die-hards. It is no longer the main activity." Not saying I agree (I kinda disagree tbh) but It kinda made me think and wish he can give a better explanation or something.

Like, I understand your point and I loved the video. But what is "boundary pushing" in any of Imagine Dragons' songs? For example, The Beatles blew up with an easy-going Rock, but what defined them as one of the best bands of all time is their amazing creativity and the revolution that they brought to multiple genres. Imagine Dragons is just doing what the industry wants. I think that's the problem many have with this band: their sound is too sanitized. Rock in its essence has to be counter culture to an extent. Their sound it's too flavourless, and that is perfect to radios. It doesn't bring anything new to the table and just helps with the homogenization of the mainstream music as a hole. And saying that people that criticise this type of music doesn't get, because it's not made for them, because it's for newer generations... it's too simplistic. I listen to a lot of electronic music, like Iglooghost, and I'm 20 years old, so I'm very part of this "new" generation. The problem it's really what the artist or the band is bringing to the table. And this is not fault of Imagine Dragons in any way. Kudos to them, they are killing on the charts. But I think music can be much much... much more.

But ID is not an evolution in any sense of the word.
@TheAnimystro6 жыл бұрын
Bruno César well saying they pander to the needs of the industry is kinda redundant as one could argue that any band that makes it to the mainstream is what the industry currently needs, by definition. The thing that is new with ID isn’t the style they play, in fact quite the opposite. What is new with them is that they are redefining the very idea of a genre, or more precisely the lack thereof, and they are exploring what you can bring to the table with that mindset. Are they the first band to mix genres? No, but they are the first band to mix this specific set of genres as successfully as they have.

I went into this video skeptical, mad about you calling Imagine Dragons rock. But you very quickly changed my stance on that - this is what rock music has become in order to maintain its relevance right now. A very diluted version of what came before. I suppose you could say it's more experimental than ever as bands try to incorporate other genres. I personally don't think Imagine Dragons are the best at it, Twenty One Pilots do a MUCH better job for isntance, but you can't deny ID's success. Anyway, I'm basically just parroting your video now. Excellent stuff, one of your best in both the script and particularly the editing.

Imagine Dragons are one of the few bands keeping Rock alive and even relevant to youth, even if it's not what we want it to be. They are experimental Rock band. Using more influences than just straight up classic rock. Using hip hop, pop, synth, electronica, etc. They serve their purpose, the next wave of Rock will do the opposite of what groups like Imagine Dragons and Twenty One Pilot, and maybe we will get groups that use more classic rock influences and blues(ahem GRETA VAN FLEET).

To be fair, although people don't see it as me, Linkin Park is not about making it to the Charts, they are about changing their style on every album and I can't see why people get pissed at that, I know heavy was a poppy track but that doesnt mean it was a sellout. It had a lot of meaning for the band and especially Chester and on top of that, no matter how electronic Linkin Parks music has gotten (for example Burn it down) they were always able to play it live without any playback etc

i never hated imagine dragons for being called rock or because they dont fit the genre that i like, im very eclectic and i apreciate the whole ''genre-less'' thing, i dislike them for their utter mediocrity despite their potencial, the lack of substance or anything interesting in their music, the over-prodection, and the un-authentic feel of their music, it never carries any sort of emotions or feelings, its background music for casual music listeners. Their stuff is catchy, sure, but its forgettable, it all blends together, it says nothing and it inspires nothing. The lead singer has an incredible voice but uses it always in the same way, they can create catchy hooks but dont make it interesting. You don't need to be avant-garde to gain my interest but their discography boils down to 7-9 singles that are all interchangeable.

I mean, if Twenty One Pilots can deliver a great album out of the blue, why wouldnt Imagine Dragons do that one day, but as long as they try to appeal to the mainstream, that will be no option. They are just such a forgettable band. Like try to name 3 songs that weren't singles, I for sure can't and that says alot imo

What album do you consider the great one out of the blue? From my perspective, and from public and critical reception, every one of their studio albums are great
@Crazelord916 жыл бұрын
@SqueakerSam That's weird, I don't know why he thinks Trench is the one "great album". While it is great it's arguably not as good as Vessel (which is my personal favorite) or Blurryface. But even if it is the best, it's not like it's significantly different stylistically from the others
@bobbyisonline6 жыл бұрын
@@Crazelord91 Hi, yes I was referring to Trench. Vessels was really uninteresting in my opinion, bringing nothing new to the table. Even though Blurryface was somewhat of an improvement, the blend of the genre really made the album feel like a mess more than something interesting. Trench on the other hand is a record I never thought I would enjoy (I didnt think Id enjoy any TØP records tbh) but it blew me away. The story behind the album is more interesting then on Blurryface. The Genre mixing finally doenst feel awkward, and the album feels like one piece, not several like on the other albums. Im not telling you what you should enjoy or not, that is totally up to you. My point was that a band or artist who you may excpect nothing of and havent enjoyed any of their previous releases, may still shock you with a great record out of the blue. (Picked up Trench on vinyl last week as well, yehaw)
@Crazelord916 жыл бұрын
@@bobbyisonline I understand that. Though I still have to disagree that this was the "great album" as public consensus seems to be scewed away from that. But opinion is opinion and I'm just glad when people enjoy good music 😁

As a metal music fan, I think that the popular vision of rock music nowadays sounds like this because we have been keeping innovation down since the NU metal era in the first 2000s, praising the "real rock/metal scene" and still looking back at the big bands in 70s, 80s and 90s, not trying to create something new, but keeping the same standards we had 30 years ago. The genre eventually became boring and old
@dontoverthink47662 жыл бұрын
agreed, its a real shame that Radiohead has stopped making rock music, they were the only ones innovating while staying mainstream.

I don't trust critic in general, but especially in music, because there are so different tastes, that I can't trust reviews. When I saw so low scores, I tried to look for Linkin Park. Know what the score for Meteora is? Something near 6... 6!!!!! Meteora! 5.3 Night Visions? Are we crazy? People always complain that songs In albums are always the same, well, ID put something new in every song, so now they coplain because of different songs, that try to make you listen different tipes of music, and not only the onr you're used to. This is why I love ID: they're always different, and so I don't trust reviews because is a very personal opinion, maybe a Hard Rock guy won't like Night Vizions, but that doesn't mean that it is bad, because It is not. So, trust me, before avoiding an album for the low score, listen to it. Music tastes are so different, that giving an album a mark is an insult to the musicians that made it and to music in general, that shuld be something you feel inside. So, everyone, in my opinion, MUST say is own point of view, but this is only the opinion of someone that sees music in different perspectives, and so you have to make your very own idea. Doesn't matter if your favourite Album of you favourite band is 5/10, because tastes are so different... At the very beginning I was stunned, but then realized this... Thanks for reading, LOVE IMAGINE DRAGONS FROM ITALY!!!!!🐲🐲🐲🐲🐲

Holy fuck... do people not realize the point of Evolve? It’s _supposed_ to be different from their usual sound. People calling them “sell outs” need to see that change doesn’t mean betrayal. I’ve been a fan since night visions, and I’ve loved every album they’ve put out. Not judging them on the actual quality of their content and categorizing them into labels aren’t a definitive test of their music. Do you dislike them just because they have a different style, or did you actually take the time to evaluate their music? Music is entirely subjective, and there are bands that I hate as much as some of you guys hate Imagine Dragons, but it’s impossible for me to say that those bands are definitively bad. They’re either not meant for me or just not compatible. I swear, it’s like a Thousand Suns all over again...
