You probably know the Arctic Monkeys from tracks like:
“Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” or “R U Mine?” and of course “Do I Wanna Know?”
And that’s understandable, their album AM is what finally brought them into the mainstream. It debuted at number 6 on the Billboard 200 and sold more copies than their last 3 did combined.
Yet at home in the UK, the Arctic Monkeys are nearly a household name, where all 5 of their albums have debuted at number one and where their first album still reigns as the fastest selling debut album - by a band - in the UK. (363,735 copies sold in its first week!)
They’ve headlined the largest festival in the UK. Twice. They’ve changed the way record labels distribute music today and they’re one of the only bands to win Best British Group and Best British Album on three separate occasions.
So what was it about AM that finally helped them break into worldwide markets? Let’s look back at their journey and find out who the f*** are Arctic Monkeys?
This music video essay is on the English rock band Arctic Monkeys, from their local beginnings to their rise to the world stage. I talk about their 18-song demo, Beneath the Boardwalk which helped thrust them into popularity after it was uploaded to the internet. Their debut record Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not is still the top selling album by a band in the UK. Their sophomore Favourite Worst Nightmare came back with even more energy. They worked with Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme for their third album Humbug introducing a new desert rock sound. They then diverted for their fourth album Suck It and See before finally releasing AM, the album that gained them worldwide attraction. Let’s dive into what audiences loved so much about AM. The grooves recalling their R&B roots, falsettos, their new personas and more.
Will the Arctic Monkeys' new album Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino continue the band's streak of success? We'll just have to wait and see.

AM is such a ridiculously sexy album. I was too busy getting down with The Mars Volta to consider the Arctic Monkeys when they were starting to explode on the early days of social media and music on the internet. Fast forward 10 years and all I can hear is Do I Wanna Know on the radio and I'm out to buy the record. Six years later and there's not a single album that gets more play time during fun time than AM. Heavy breathing, a strong grip and that drum opening go together like coffee and cream.

I agree completely Mr Volta I remember my first exposure to them was the opening ceremony of the 2012 London olympics and as someone that loved stuff like green day and MCR but it was really nice without being too similar I also liked the constant reinventing of themselves it makes things interesting, it also means you have an album for every situation

This is what fascinates me about this band! I think I got to know them between albums 2 and 3, and I remember being kinda frustrated when Humbug came out. But I was so hooked that it finally passed over my head and the new songs were my new favourites at the time. Since then I sometimes have been disappointed, but also pleasantly surprised. I don't want to be the frustrated fangirl who just hates the band for not sticking to "who they are", because let's face it : people change. They grow up. And it's refreshing.

As a Brit listening in it's really interesting to see an American's point of view from the outside, since they've been a household name for anyone from Yorkshire (where I and they are from) just because of how bloody relatable they were. They've lost that relatability a bit as they move on with their music and though I prefer their first two albums, I think nearly all the music they've put out holds its own. You can't keep singing about nights out in Sheffield when you're living in LA lol... Keep up with the great vids man, really appreciate them!

Absolutely. I find that, with a lot of great music you find yourself visualising a place and usually the place where the the band are from. Their earlier stuff always makes me think of Yorkshire. The newer stuff definitely has a Californian influence. I think that's why Americans didn't get their earlier stuff. Americans are exposed to London a lot but not the North of England anywhere near as much.
@Durden1866
@Durden1866 6 жыл бұрын
They’ve definitely got more American influences since moving there obviously that’s bound to happen but I still love how Alex throws in some Yorkshire slang in all his songs that we can still relate to! More so in TBH&C than AM as well!

I was 17-18 when AM came out. I had just hit my I MUST LISTEN TO CLASSIC (Rock) MUSIC phase the year before, so at that point, I was like, OK, now I need something to call my own. When I heard AM, it was exactly what I was looking for: modern rock and roll. I have since listened to all the other records and I love the first two, like Humbug, and Suck It and See just goes in one ear and out the other for me. AM is still my favorite. Also, I'm seeing the band play TD Garden in 3 weeks!

Its not, the first two album defined who they are, they took the brit rock genre and made it theirown, With every newer album they tried to branch out, to get more people into arctic monkeys and with AM it worked, i dont say there not good moments on the later albums but it wasnt the shit everyone was after. later albums wasnt load and reload of metallica level of shift, where it was a complete diff genre and vibe but still really good music. the newest album is just really meh, its like a junkie music that plays in the back man.

American here. I was first introduced to Arctic Monkeys around 2010-11 when I was in college (university). But my friend was already a big fan of theirs and she told me to start from their first album. I remember she asked me a few weeks later if I had listened to them yet and I was like oh no sorry I'm busy, haven't got around to it. So she send me "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" and said really quick just listen to this. That was all it took, I was hooked. Immediately I loved their first two albums. I didn't even get to Humbug for a while after because I was still so enamored with the first two and trying to learn every word. It would have been too much at once lol. Even though I couldn't relate to them being from the US, it felt to me like I was visiting a friend in the UK and they were showing me around to the non-tourist spots and giving me a real feel of the life there. I can definitely see where they tried to be like the UK version of The Strokes at first but imo they did it better. Then I finally listened to Humbug and then Suck It and See which had just come out at the time and this time it took a few listens to each to really get into them but I always appreciate when artists try something different. And same thing they then went on repeat til I learned all the words, I went to see them live 3 times (with the aforementioned friend each time). I've loved everything they put out since. I love how they reinvent themselves, the side projects, the Submarine EP, all of it. One of the truly great bands of this generation.

WOW! Just another huge shift from the last album, this on is very synth and soft, it's music that would best be played whilst making out and spun on vinyl. Listen to it while laying back with the lighting low, it will put you in the right mood to take it in.

I think that they didn't get US success because it was very British back when they first started so radios didn't understand it. Then they tried psych and stoner vibes its not popie enough for America, finally moving to Am they got all that right but in the meantime meant that i can't get a ticket anywhere ffs

Nice video, and I agree with what you're saying. Arctic Monkeys evolved and progressed their sound. I like that. It's not that I hated their earlier stuff, and I was following them when they released AM. But after hearing the AM album I became a real fan of the band. I respect bands who are willing to try new things and change their sound. This takes guts and songwriting ability. When it's a successful endeavour, you get an awesome album like AM. I still listen to this album in my car on a regular basis.

All of their albums are great. I usually have certain moods to listen to any of them tho. Humbug is best when you're high or drunk, Suck It and See is best if you're alone in a car or room and just want some easy listening, AM is best in a car ride with friends or in a party, Tranquility Base is best when you REALLY want to feel some goosebumps. But the first two albums, I'll listen to it any fucking time

I just don't get people who immediately say "they're older stuff was better." As if they're new stuff just sucks. Like Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino is fucking incredible, it's just completely different than anything before. Which is insanely impressive if you ask me. I love the space age vibe and the slowness at times. But hey, that's just me. I would love more stuff like Favourite Worst Nightmare, but as an American, AM was the first album I heard by them, and it's what I fell in love with. But I've grown to completely appreciate their earlier stuff even though it's made for a British audience. I just don't understand extremist fans, for anything really besides just bands, who hate everything except for the one album they love. Like how do you live life with no changes? Change is one of my favorite things and seeing a band evolve is awesome, because I'm along for the ride to see what's next.

@@themidwife1624 but like saying its the worst is also harsh. Its diffrent but many of the songs are bops. I fell in love with knee socks and i wanna be yours. Yes, there older stuff is also good but so is AM. BTW the first time I heard of them was actually in English class at school (I'm german) in our book was a text abouz how to become a singer and Arctic Monkeys was mentioned and even a song example came with the book. It was fluorecent adolecent (I hope I spelled that right) and I fell in love with them. I'm glad that they did put out AM. It made them big internationaly. I so often hear them in german trash tv. I'm always trying to first start with the new stuff and then go to the old, did that with P!atd, TØP and The Neightbourhood. And I always prefered the newer stuff beat wise but the older lyrical wise
