Pitching a card is a down side. It's just not much of a down side because card advantage in Modern is very efficient. Personally have no issue with these cards but I can agree that they didn't really need to exist.

Imo the midrange style of deck that Jund represented back in the day still exists today in the form of 4c Omnath, a deck that goes over faster strategies and under slow ones. Just the newer cards added to the game mean that the cards that made up Jund back in the day are just worse forms of the cards 4c Omnath now runs, meaning that Jund really was just power crept out of existence.

@@Sommeill I mean the main issue for me at least is that the power creep costs so much money. Power creep is inevitable in a card game, but the amount of super expensive cards that have been forced into modern have made it really not feel like the eternal format it is supposed to be. I feel like many an old Jund player would probably enjoy playing 4c Omnath, but most of them don't want to spend the well over a thousand dollars needed to get the cards.

@@anonymousturtle3358 I feel like you're wrong about this, as us Jund players have been notorious for spending outrageous amounts of money on Magic cards... Jund was the most expensive deck in Modern for a long, long time even when it wasn't the best deck in the format.

Now that modern’s meta as a whole is comparably faster than before, I’m curious what or when in the future may contribute to the meta slowing down. Or perhaps it will continue down this trajectory until some inevitable bans or rule changes.

Lately I've had the most success with a Jund list that doesn't run Goyf, Saga or DRC anymore. Since they're a huge liability especially post sideboard. It consists of: 3x Liliana of the vail 3x Seasoned Pyros 2x Grist 4x Ragavan 1x Fury 3x Bolt 3x Fatal push 3x Thoughtseize 3x Inquisition 2x Tourach, Dread Cantor 2x Kroxa 2x Terminate 1x Unlicensed Hearse 2x Riveteers Charm 4x Wrenn and Six Plus 22 Lands. Including 1x Boseiju, Who Endures; 1x Takenuma, Abandoned Mire; 1x Raging Ravine; and 1x Ziatora's Proving Ground.

Yup that pretty much sums it. Ecsept you kinda under played the power creep aspect of this issue. For example even back in 2018 BOB became a 2 of or sometimes cut entirely. Ask The Duke. He had versions with and without BoB. Especially after Wrenn&6.

I’m currently building Jund Saga for modern. I’m thinking torpor orb could be a step in the right direction, as it stops 4c elementals in its tracks

Good idea in theory. But you can't fetch for it using Urza's Saga, and I don't think its a great idea to have more than 1 of it in deck (can be dead card in so many other match ups)

When I took a hiatus from mtg a few years ago, I was saying this very thing. People were saying that modern was growing too stagnant and that printing powerful cards regularly to change things up with *at least* every standard set was the answer. With formats like standard, modern, and legacy being prohibitively expensive, they need to be consistent on power level or every set demands a buy in.

jund only need 1 card, and this card exist, because no modern legal. If u play long time magic u know this card name is Pernicious Deed, with this card u can stop a lot of squishy decks, only have problems with scam

Losing W&6 and Ragavan is a way you can't play the deck, maybe a Junk list could work but I'd just play Mardu with Ragavan and Solitude

Because the moment you consider white in a deck that is RG, you just look at Omnath's text box and realize you should play 4C and still get W6. Then you can choose between playing black discard spells or a load of truly actually broken stuff.

Agree with the analisys, Jund fell mainly because it's threats have become so bad it's ridiculous. The format got speedier and grindier at the same time, and maybe the deck could adapt to one or the other, but not both. From a deckbuilding perspective you have two choices, increase card power level by sacrificing consistency or go the other way around. For increased power level, one option is to splash another color... surprisingly, that leads directly to ditching jund for 4C because the mana base consistency actually increases so you actually gett the cake and eat it. The other choice is to cut colors and play a MHayashi list, which imo stays truer to the spirit of actual jund than the 80 card abomination in that the idea is still to exchange resources and get in a topdeck war with superior card quality.

Black just sucks as a color. They push discard which sucks when as you brought up, top decks are so good. Sadly, black's only advantage over other colors is discard. Its removal is outdated and is getting pushed out by hyper-pushed white cards.
