Whenever I answer a judge call, i always get the players to explain what phase they are in and what interactions occurred to create the situation. This establishes what the entire context is for the call and means that we don't have any situation where I am making guesses about whats going on, leading to an incorrect ruling.

It's a massive tell when after a player shuffles he doesn't offer his deck to his opponent to cut and moves quickly to draw a card... Always cut your opponent's deck at the very least, or a fun way to troll is to put the top card of their deck on the bottom...

It is hard to believe that he didnt know how this card worked. The "well he conceded" reaction to it makes me think that was his goal though.

I was judging an event about ten years ago and as I was watching a game, one of the players absent mindedly picked up his deckbox, opened it up and had a look at his sideboard. So far pretty normal. Then he grabbed his hand of cards and shuffled it into his sideboard, before returning the whole lot to the deckbox. Neither players noticed until the turn was passed back, at which point I had to intervene. It was so long ago that I can't remember exactly what I ruled (it was post-board) but I'm pretty sure the player in question conceded.

The massive problem with modern imo is that it turned from "best of standard" to "Modern Horizons Block Constructed" Look at the top decks of the format and almost every single card outside of the mana base entered the format not through standard, but a direct to modern set, be it MH1-3 or Lord of the Rings Eternal formats should always have been only the collateral of standard and draft

I was playing Cephalid Breakfast in a legacy event at comp rel. Try to combo off with Shuko and my opponent calls a judge to ask whether I can actually re-equip Shuko to the Cephalid Illusionist it is already equipped to. Judge says "I dont know, let me ask the head judge." Comes back in a minute and rules that it is not allowed, which completely negates my combo. I escalate to the head judge, they immediately rule the same way. I ask them to show me where in the rules it says I cannot re-equip, they obviously cannot find it and finally they give in and rule correctly. Nerve-wracking!

Watching this a year on after Nadu summer almost makes it more sad. Ultimately modern's become an innaccessible format, its no longer the best of standard, its MH block constructed.

This is why I left MTG, among a bunch of other factors all caused by WOTC themselves. Terrible company.

"T, Pay 1 life, Sacrifice Wooded Foothills: Search your library for a Mountain or Forest card, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle." You have to do it in the order, as soon as you see someone shuffling and mixing cards around before pulling the land and placing it on the field, they are breaking the rules.

All this cheating could easily be stopped by forcing opponents to cut. Play should never resume when a player shuffles a deck, until the opponent cuts their deck or taps their deck indicating no cut desired. You could make a ruling in which you state. "Any player which shuffles a deck must give the deck to the opponent to be cut before any further play can proceed. If either opponent fails to cut a deck once offered (or tap the deck to indicate no cut is desired), and play proceeds, the player who offers the deck to be cut shall immediately forfeit. Players have a reasonable time limit (up to 10 seconds) to either cut an offered deck or tap it indicating no cut is desired. If a player does not cut the deck within this time limit, that player shall forfeit the game." Basically means, if you don't offer your opponent a cut of a deck YOU shuffle, you forfeit. If you do and the opponent does not cut or tap it. They forfeit. If you take an opponents deck and shuffle it, same thing. If you shuffle your opponents deck and do not offer it to be cut by the opponent, you forfeit. If you do and the opponent fails to cut or tap it. They forfeit. EASY.

Who else hates modern horizons?

I've just found this little gem of a video...nice job. I played DotP since it was fist released, had an amazing time on it. Found a little website of like-minded player (nogoblinsallowed) and even ran tournaments for both the xbox and computer communities for a few years and was able to get some prize support from WotC. An absolutely awesome time to be playing, imo. Problem i found was i don't think WotC knew what to do with this product, and Stainless (which was widely criticized as"brainless") translated a host of buggy features. The format for Duels was different and made for slightly less consistent decks, but it also made it fun and different yhan paper. Rarely did any card get to be overly powerful or ubiquious (Mwolvoni Acid-Moss not withstanding). There were some stategies that were underpowered or under represented, but it made for a fun experience. I miss this game and come back to it a few times a year. I look forward to seeing my next victim...i mean opponent!

I get Magic is a VERY VERY complicated game but Deflecting Palm is clear and defines YOU. Not Creature, not planeswalker but YOU. Fun note: Deflecting Palm gets around Shroud, Hexproof and Protection.
