Monster Reborn is an objectively good card by most metrics. But cards are designed much differently now than they were 10-15+ years ago, so it's basically a decent extender at most, and outright redundant at worst when many archetypes have a searchable Monster Reborn.

Exactly dude in 01-03 when I played serious it was so fun and so many good combos and even close to OTK in many cases with cyberstein monster reborn change of heart and especially if you used black hole or trap hole on a super strong enemy and revive it to your side adding a few more with either adding to it or special summoning via cyber the ultimate blue eyes and saying fuckkkkkk everything i win! Sometimes I'd show my hand if it was strong enough if I was playing someone IRL and sometimes they'd just forfeit late into the game if their situation was bad and I showed I still had all the cards needed to do a OTK lmao good times man, beat sticks are a bad thing nowadays but back then they were just called Yu-Gi-Oh monsters either regular or effect lol and annoying fking fusions and stuff but few ppl used those legit

"Raigeki is also limited." This aged well. The other factor against Monster Reborn is that you have a lot of decks that don't run main deck monsters that amount to anything on the field and it's almost impossible to use your opponent's monsters for anything because most decks don't play well with outside cards. I run it in my Lunalight deck as another way to take advantage of Kaleidochick or get a Panther Dancer back in the middle of a combo (Tiger's back, but she can only summon back stuff to use as material rather than a beatstick [summons back in defense and negates their effects]). It's a bit of a winmoar card, so I'd only ever run it as a 1-of anyway.

I try to run Monster Reborn in all my decks simply because you never know when you'll need a little something extra on the field. Also, it's amusing to summon a monster your opponent may have been keeping in their graveyard for later, only to have you steal it from them.

Burning Soul let’s you add any card back to your hand from the graveyard then synchro. So RDA can effectively use Reborn 4 times. Of course that isn’t to say you’ll grab it every time, but just an example.

@@Nah-NoNeed_ It's not in Duel Links, but Anhkuriboh can search it from the deck or GY (thereby making it searchable in Kuriboh decks), but that search effect isn't very good since it searches it during the End Phase and only if it was destroyed by battle/card effect and sent to the GY specifically.

With the release of Master duel, this is the first time in over a decade I've played yugioh in any competitive sense, I like playing thunder dragons cause of nostalgia and I have fun, but learning all the changes that have happened over the years really show when I can't figure out what the heck my opponent is doing, cards like raigeki or monster reborn don't pull through as much with things like xyz and links, it really throughs me for a loop, listening to these videos helps me understand just how much has changed and what changes I need to make to my deck, I'm excited to continue playing duel masters but it's a long process on learning all these new cards and archetypes

i can't help but find that assessment about xyzs and links a bit strange. like, i suppose monster reborn _is_ made somewhat less effective against xyz decks if you need to dip into their gy but all their boss monsters are good because of their detach effects, but otherwise those monster types shouldn't ... really impact either of those spells? sure you'll run into monsters that pack destruction immunity or give other monsters it a lot more often than you would in old ygo, but that's something you see on _all_ kinds of boss monsters and the vast majority of xyzs and links still go crispy when you drop a raigeki on 'em, so ...

I still use it. Good for extending, or bringing back my boss monsters. Also good turn 1, usually easy to pitch monsters to the grave these days. So cheeky reviving an opponents ash blossom or Veiler to make Halq with it.

Aside from the lore-wise reason to why Monster Reborn is limited (Battle City limited the card in the Duel Monsters anime), Monster Reborn is still iconic enough to be in relevant discourse. In Rush Duel, up until Mirror Force was released, Monster Reborn was a Tier 0 LEGEND card, and its supernatural powers of making a duelist lose their memories are a key plot point in the SEVENS anime (making it a card literally to be feared), meaning that Monster Reborn is an old-school card that has its own Rush Duel specific lore, something which no other old-school card has had the benefit of having. (A surprising number of duels in the anime used Monster Reborn as a MacGuffin, or used it to revive an opponent's monster to swing for game) That said, Rush Duel is a format where the things that made it largely obsolete in Master Duel simply do not exist, so Monster Duel seeing a lot of play there makes a lot of sense.

I still see Monster Reborn in quite a few decklists. I wouldn't exactly call it a staple, but it isn't a card you can just write off, and I suspect it will continue to see fringe play ongoing. I also don't think it should be unlimited. The card may have some cons going for it, but it is a very powerful, flexible effect, a good extender in a lot of combo decks with the additional upside of being able to revive your opponent's GY, and while I don't think it would break anything perse, I suspect an unlimited Monster Reborn might be a little too powerful. As it is, it is a sacky 1-of with a whole lot of upside, provided your archetype can use it as an extender, and maybe doesn't have a searchable Reborn in archetype

Trust me, when a monster reborn is activated against you, it is still a clencher of a card. It's not that it's bad by any metric, but that most decks simply have their own variant of them that can be searched, removing the need for the og card. And thanks to archetypes, stealing from the opponents grave is not as good as it once was (though I did Reborn an opponents destroy phoenix enforcer to hilarious effect via monster reborn) That said, it is still a card to keep in mind when your deck needs 1 more extender

Oh for sure. I mean aside from needing a monster to be in the Gy already, there's literally no downside to the card itself. And yeah the archtype thing was something I noticed a long time ago even when it was still coming on and off the banlist, but it was still nice for either bringing out a free monster to use as material, or bringing back a boss monster after being destroyed. That said, between a lot of archtypes having their own Monster Reborn, and a searchable one at that, on top of the fact that the original Monster Reborn essentially has nothing but positives to it, it's honestly pretty mind boggling to me haha

I currently use monster reborn in my Junk Synchron deck and it’s amazing. Last competitive deck I used it in was spyrals in 2020. I completely agree with you about not using it cause of the hard once per turn monsters. When you find a deck it’s good in, it is perfect though.

I still play it in some of my rogue decks, it's a handy extender that can't be ashed and occasionally you can use it to yoink something obnoxious from the opponent's grave like a Dragoon or Destroyer Phoenix or grab a tuner hand trap for syncros.

I like monster reborn in my sky striker deck in masterduel. 1. You want to get spells in your GY 2. You can revive your kagari (which is on one in master duel) during your 2nd turn. 3. You can revive one of your opponents monsters with a GY effect you don't want him to use and then link in something else (remember you always want to go second with sky striker so there will be something in your opponents GY). 4. You can even use it for reviving your opponents ash blossom which basically allows you to go in Accesscode talker for free with the halqifibrax/selene combo. So I think in this specific deck it works quite well. But yeah I definitely can see why not every deck is playing this card.

As a Sacred Beast player mainly, I sometimes thought this was a decent extender if your Dark Beckoning Beast gets hand-trapped, because if it does, you link off into Almiraj then use Monster Reborn to bring back Dark Beckoning Beast. You wouldn't get the search, but you would get back the extra summon effect, so if you already have Opening of the Spirit Gates, then your combo is fine again. But that's a very niche option compared to just using Called by the Grave or Crossout Designator if you play them. Just felt like pointing out getting back the extra summoning effect off of it was worth mentioning.

I always play my Monster Reborn. I usually don't draw it till a dire moment and when it is in opening hand I can generally keep it there and play it on cards like Buster Blader, Cracking Dragon and my Fusion Cards. Another card I also don't hear getting too much play is Polymerization which is honestly one of my favorites and is pretty much the best card in MY deck because my deck is good by itself but I generally try to fusion summon as the fusions I use have materials that aren't very specific or can easily be summoned from my deck

Monster Reborn in the modern meta game really has one pretty linear use: playing through disruption. I played it in Gouki back when Ghost Ogre was really big in the format. Obviously, if they Ogre the Isolde, Reborn is crazy, but it was also a really crazy way to improve the board too because near the end of the combo you could reborn a Cerberus or a Phoenix to co-link it to your Firewall, Trigate, Gumblar, whatever and it would give your board that much more protection. Another Firewall bounce, a way to make an Omni negate. Sometimes, if you drew weird, you could even use it to complete the extra link when otherwise you’d be ending on like Firewall Mermaid Goblin Pass.

Having gotten back into things thanks to Master Duel I was discussing this card with my friend too. I have it in just because the deck is still being tweaked as gems and crafting materials come up. One thing that stuck out to me though is how archetypes solidified as the game went on. Often your opponents graveyard just isn't that useful to you, when you specifically are looking for that level 3 dark or whatever. Sometimes the best effect of Monster Reborn that turn is not letting the opponent have something in their graveyard to begin with.

Monster Reborn is a good card. It's a free special summon of a monster from your GY. Its a solid extender, even though set up is required. However, since it's at 1, and card design had changed in a huge way. Lots of decks want monsters in the GY for grave effects or to special summon a different way.

One of the main things about Monster Reborn though is that it isn't a once per turn effect whereas a lot of these newer searchable specific MR's are once per turn the advantage as well with Monster Reborn is that it can be used in any deck, Pot of Desires as good as it is, is not used in every single deck due to the fact that some decks can in theory just surrender after using it if they banish the wrong quarter of their main deck, whereas if Pot of Greed was in the game it would at the very least make every 40 card deck a 41-43 card deck. I think a few comments have made a good note as well, Monster Reborn is really good in mirror matches, as if you haven't gotten a certain monster available yet and your opponent does have it in their grave you can take it out of and use it even if it is a once per turn effect, can't access the graveyard effect from it though as it goes back to the opponents grave. You could hide an important monster as part of an Xyz material for a turn or two, I ripped my mates Sky striker raye out of the grave and stuck it underneath Primathmech Laplacian which stopped him from summoning raye when I took out his link monster (ironically with Laplacian's effect as well) the 4k attack afterwards might have been a bit much but he was playing Sky Strikers...

I really sit down and consider adding cards like Monster Reborn to my decks because I know how powerful of a card it can be when used right but most people only see it as an extender and not a gamechanger anymore. Because of this I started playing with 60 card decks, Fluffals and Infernoble Knights are my main 2 decks that I run. Started out at 40 with Fluffals but then gradually started to realize how much draw power and searching that deck does, I'm already 15-20 cards deep in my deck and it's only othe 1st or 2nd turn. I was literally running out of resources and nearly decking out so I simply added more cards. You'd be surprised at how consistent they both are at 60. Monster Reborn is a classic staple that any deck can run. People forget that you can steal your opponents strongest monsters when used right. I especially love it when noobs sit on one Dragoon or Destiny Hero, just too easy of an out for me and they get pissy when I steal thwm from the graveyard.

In actual TCG, I can't remember the last time I used the card, but in Master Duel it's a staple I don't have to craft so it's an auto include for every deck lmao. It's actually really good in Strikers with 1 Kagari though.

I'm currently going back and forth on it in my Volcanic Eldlich Synchro deck. Sure, it's not a starter, but the card's so versatile it might as well be. You've got Hand Trap monsters hitting the Graveyard Turns 0 and 1, whatever monsters your opponent cycles through if you're going 2nd, Link-1's, Droplet, unless you're playing against D-Shifter, Eldlich, or an anti-Grave strategy, Reborn's almost always going to be live. Maybe it's not as disruptive as other cards, being a Spell Speed 1? You could maybe take a key part of their engine temporarily out of circulation, like Enforcer, the Golden Lord, or something like that (not sure how viable this is), but that could be another reason it's not as popular nowadays.

Decks that have monsters that discard or tribute themselves for effects can make Monster Reborn a useful extender. I play it in Harpies to revive Queen or stuff pitched by Channeler.

I still like to have it in most decks I build, since it can (sometimes) help to restart a combo, stall a turn, bait a negation or sometimes it is just a discard for another card. But I still feel like I wouldn't need more than 1, or at most 2, of them, since relying on them would most definitely be a failing strategy. So I like Monster Reborn just where it is :)

I do see why it's been power crept, but I still think Monster Reborn deserves to see more play. It's still amazing in link decks like Dragons and Bee Trooper, where you need to just spam as many monsters onto the board as possible, and if you have access to a Link-1 it's basically always online. I would contend that in a format like the current one, where games can get quite grindy, that it's still one of the best top decks in the game. Being able to revive a fallen boss monster or your archetypes "stratos" monster can get you back in the game like little else.

I pretty much relate Monster Reborn to The Winged Dragon of Ra. And part of why it's still limited is because it was limited in battle city I imagine. For lore reasons. Keep in mind Raigeki would fit the same as it was considered a powerful card. And we see the Ra support that essentially is meant to mimmick Mariks playstyle which involved manipulating a single copy. Although that's just my mindset. I was also expecting a Ra exclusive Monster reborn that copied that name similar to harpies.

Monster Reborn is actually INSANE in Duel Links right now. In almost any deck it's amazing, but especially in Gaia, it just feels so sacky when you're able to pop a card with the Gaia fusion monster, then tribute it with Soldier Gaia, SEARCH BLS, and then Monster Reborn the fusion so it comes back at 2600 ATK. Even if you don't OTK, you have a huge swing in card advantage and a disruption for the next turn. I love that the card is getting a second lease on life, it feels so good to resolve it again.

All of the power spells are not searchable or are too situational compared to something like Triple Tactical Talents and Lightning Storm/Evenly Matched/Zeus. Cards like Mind Control and even Change of Heart (the best of the power spells, hurting your opponent while also giving you an advantage) can both come to 3 as far as I'm concerned, Raigeki is powercrept by Slumber, it too can come to 3; Even HFD can come to 3 since Lightning Storm is arguably better for being versatile like TTT. Delinquent Duo and Confiscation and Forceful Sentry are a bit more dangerous because going 1st is so impactful, that any 3 of these coming back can actually make a difference; TTT technically requires your opponent's input. Cards like Snatch Steal and Premature Burial are much better having the Equip status so they can be searched or reused or used with Isolde; Call of the Haunted was once considered as powerful but is now considered horrendous because it is even slower; Monster Reborn is average or fair, which in competitive Yu-Gi-Oh translates to: worthless.

Mind Control was garbage until Synchros came out and with Link and Xyz monsters on top of that, it's only better. Even if it doesn't see much if any play due to lack of room and TTT having more versatility at the cost of your opponent's input and hard once per turn status. Change of Heart cannot come back as is. You can literally extend your plays using your opponents cards and it's a godly top deck and pre-errata Brain Control got banned because of that reason and it was a worse Change of Heart back then. Raigeki, maybe but I still don't think it should. It's too easy of a monster wipe. Harpie's Feather Duster, definitely not. Its power is kept in check by its Limited status. It's good there while not destroying the viability of back-row reliant decks. Lightning Storm is situational because it's only good if you open it and go second or if you have an empty board and get a lucky top deck with it. I'll grant its versatility but being situational is valid due to its restrictions. TTT requiring your opponent's input means there are times it can be dead in hand but it certainly has merits for use. It's also situational and too much for my taste personally but maybe I'll give it another chance. Evenly Matched is kind of different from any other card that was made when it was first released. I think the closest card to it was Torrential Tribute I believe and that still sees play sometimes. But being able to use it from your hand at essentially the cost of your Battle Phase to turn things back into your favour is something I don't think any other card like it can do. It's something I consider in side decks or to main it even. Zeus is quite broken. It's kind of like a modern pre-errata Chaos Emperor Dragon minus the hand rip that most any deck can use. I'm honestly surprised it isn't banned. None of those cards you mentioned apart from the Equip Spells are searchable either I believe and Zeus doesn't count because it's an Extra Deck card.

I don't use it in my most played deck but it's still a strong enough card that I still play around it when I banish from the graveyard as long as doing so won't cause me any other issues just in case. It hasn't happened often recently but I have still lost a couple times because I didn't do so.

I am having some mild sucess running monster reborn in my madolche deck in Master Duel (because i am out of resources and no idea of what else to run on staples for the deck, considering that i am already feeling that 6 hand traps (2 maxx c, 2 nibiru, 2 ash blossom) are already on the limit of consistency, but i got 2 called by the grave and 3 pot of prosperity (with a raigeki and a monster reborn as placeholders)) and i can say it is a fun card to have in the deck, using it to revive a messengelato so i can double dip and have the salon and chateau in one combo, or baiting a negate so i can safely summon a hootcake so i can trigger it's effect, or clearing my GY from that one pesky hand trap i discarded on turn 2 so i can trigger my pettingcessour. It isnt the best option for starting plays but i am having a fun time problem solving with monster reborn

I met once a dude with exodia deck. He sent 3 parts to the cemetery and had the other 2 parts in his hands and was waiting for dark factory of mass production. I used monster reborn and took one of his pieces away and left it on the field for the entire match. Loved it.

I've put Monster Reborn in my Eldlich deck in Master Duel, mostly as another way to get Eldlich if I do not have an Eldlixir ready, or if I want to use a free monster as material (particularly if Zombie World is active). Also, what is the TCG version of Monster Reborn is supposed to be? I get that it's an ankh in the original version, but I don't know what the other artwork is supposed to be.

Play it in my current Mekk-Knight deck as basically a less restrictive 2nd copy of World Legacy Succession. It's a fairly decent extender card to play but that's more or less it. Still happy to have it when the game calls for it.

I think a big factor is that by modern card standards Monster reborn is a pretty short extender compared to what combos can do now without it. I started playing sky strikers [in master duel] and a lot of the cards come back from the grave or give me so much advantage that I wouldn't need a pot of greed or monster reborn because those effects are built into the support cards. For other archetypes though, I could see it being good. I will usually play it myself if I don't have something else to throw in. The big factor is being able to get my opponent's stuff, but it's worth pointing out that I think i've only actually won maybe one key duel with MR. Something like Raigeki has been more potent in general for me. I don't think getting just one extra card from the grave is as strong as removal or card advantage in my opinion.

While most archetypes have their own version of Monster Reborn, even if searchable, they always have any kind of restriction or maybe an activation requirement. What I like about Monster Reborn, is how flexible the card is. You can use it whenever you want, on the monster you want, even if it's not from your archetype. And you don't need to worry about any kind of restriction. I think that the most limiting factor is that the card is limited, so you can't rely on its extender capabilities. If the card was semi-limited or not limited at all, I kinda see decks considering to include it.

Honestly, I'm not sure if Monster Reborn would be played at more than one copy anyway, because it's not a starter, it's an extender. I think another reason it saw near universal play in old-school Yu-Gi-Oh is because you'd often be running the same type of deck as your opponent (you know, chaos decks), so you'd be pretty likely to summon something from your opponent's graveyard, which would simultaneously give you a monster that you're fairly likely to have a use for, and possibly stop their chaos monsters from hitting the field, since you're also depriving them of graveyard setup. Using a reborn to summon a Black Luster Soldier or Chaos Sorcerer from your opponent's graveyard is hilarious, too.

Monster Reborn is one of the icons of this game. Not every deck has it's own searchable reborn spell, not every deck is filled with hard once per turns and not every deck's boss monsters have to be always summoned properly. Just look at some old archetypes like Speedroid, Cyber Dragons, Shaddoll and Sky Strikers and how they adore that one single copy in their decks. People might not play it in our current meta decks, but it can drastically change and make MR popular again.

I run Monster Reborn in a lot of my decks, but that's mostly because those decks don't have an inherent revival effect (or at least don't have one that doesn't eat up my Normal Summon). My HERO deck for example has it as a way of extending plays and as a way to recycle my monsters without needing to Normal Summon Liquid Soldier

I've been playing master duel and i use monster reborn and raigeki a lot in my rogue decks i don't use meta but it helps a lot in my personal experience even if i cant use my monster reborn for my opponent monsters except for their modern boss monsters

It spent a good number of early years on the ban list as well if I recall correctly. I remember how bummed I was to pull one from DB1 because it was still banned and then it got taken off the list and I was so excited. As to the question of the video, I actually just started putting Monster Reborn in my Gladiator Beasts.

I guess it heavily depends on what kinds of combo decks are in the format. -Tri-Brigade banishes too many graveyard resources -Swordsoul would rather have more archetypal names -PK would rather play Dangers But if you look at some other decks from previous formats like Adamancipator, Dragon Link and Prank Kids make great use of the card.

Monster reborn can help you play around ash in adamancipator prank kids to go full combo so you can save the crossout or called by the grave for other handtraps, In fact , you can even revive their ash to go into halqifibrax

i think it's more because of the evolved phylosophy of boss monsters... in the early days, most removal was destruktion and most bossmonsters could be special summoned from the graveyard, which made Reborn a good recover card... nowadays, bossmonsters are more limited in how they can be summoned and "good" removal spins or removes the monster, where reborn doesn't help, so it lost it's original role while decks that want to revive something have archetypical or otherwise searchable options to do this

I always saw Monster Reborn as the one "Freebie" OP card that every duelist should have. And it was easy to get, as most starter decks gave them out like candy (even if you only bought one of each starter deck). It is the single most flexible card that you can, and usually are, able to use and any point in the game. And to top it off, the TCG art for it is a rare instance of the censored art actually looking better/cooler then the original OCG art (in my opinion).

I actually run Monster Reborn in my @ignister deck as well as the 2 different in archetype reborn cards. That extra bit of extension really goes far, but I also don't think I'd run more than 1 if it eventually got unlimited like Raigeki

As far as Duel Links goes, it's worth noting that players have access to a universal skill that let's them top deck a monster reborn when they need it most. Pretty great, especially for brand new players trying to make some headway into ranked.
