1998 was a great year for Hip Hop. Jay-Z released Vol 2 Hard knock life. The album came in at number 1 on the billboard 200 and sold over 350000 in the first week. Hard knock life turned Jay into a household name. He started doing more shows, he was making more television appearances and as a result Jay-Z became a mogul. Now jay was not the only rapper making moves. In the same year Dmx dropped his first two studio albums. It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot came in at number 1 on billboard and sold 251000 in the first week. and his second album Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood sold 670000 and came in at number 1 on the billboard charts. In 1999 Ja Rule released his debut album called Venni Vetti Vecci which debuted at number 3 on the US Billboard 200 and sold 185,000 copies. At the time, Jay, X and Ja were signed to separate labels. Jay represented Rocafella, X was a def jam artist and Ja was the flagship artist at murder inc however before venni vett’s release Irv gotti brought them all together to form a supergroup called Murder Inc.

Noo he really wasn't. DMX had that first album that rocked Black spring break and the whole summer. I give you that. DMX wasn't rappin about money in that era. Jay already had a catalog from hell and #1 collaborations everywhere. He was featured on all the underground Clue albums. The Warlox weren't signed to Bad Boys long. It was significant because Y.O (Yonkers) was finally getting the credit it deserved.

Everyone wants to know who was bigger let's look at this from all angles. Jay-Z had the radio. X had the streets. Dmx's first 3 album's were classics all reaching number one and selling around 14 million. Jay-z like Nas had a classic first album that only connected on the streets and went gold. 2nd album went plat and hard knock life went 5x plat. They both toured on the hard knock life tour. The Ruff Ryder's comp went Plat. DJ Clue's album went plat. X recorded hits with Aaliyah and not many people outside of the RR camp. Jay did hit records with Beyonce, Mariah, Mya, Missy Jermaine Dupri and R.Kelly with whom he did an album with. X started doing movie's Jay focused on fashion with Rocafella and later had a shoe deal with Reebok. Dmx released a book on his life which was dope. Jay-Z brought out Michael Jackson at hot 97's summer jam where he declared war with Nas and Prodigy. They both ran the late 90's early 00's but it's neck and neck in my opinion.

Gotta admit Ja was hot in the late 90, early 2000s. He was on fire after being featured on Jay's Can I Get A. The Murderers Group would've been fire with Jay, X, and Ja. I bought Ja's 1st 3 albums and the 2 Murderers albums (w. Vita, Black Tah, Charlie Baltimore, Ashanti, Lloyd). Murder Inc had the game on lock, top budget videos, a lot of Radio Friendly songs...but 50 and the Feds came...and the rest is history.

Jay Z was the only smart artist, he went into retirement because he did not want to compete with 50 cent. he said 50 cent was like a tsunami, 50 cent started rapping right behind Jay Z in 1997 with Jam master Jay. Jay Z knew him from that time.

Jay was definitely a bigger artist from 98-2000. Hard knock life was bigger than anything X had at that time. X was huge (pause) but Jay brought more to the table than X.

The only rap group Hov was apart of was The Firm with Nas, AZ, Foxy Brown and Cormega. He would've been apart of the comission if biggie didn't die. Murder Inc was only a label

No he was suppose to release power of the dollar in 1999 album got shelved sometime after murda inc beat him down in atlanta then after that he was stabbed in the hit factory then the order of protection gets filed he kept running his mouth then he got shot in front of his grandma's house all the while murda inc is still tearing up the charts look 03 Curtis Jackson gets signed and links up with Eminem and Dr Dre at this time they made diss after diss but the feds rush murda inc studio offices ceasing equipment guns drugs etc then they start putting pressure on their accountants lawyers def jam stops fucking with murda inc they finally go to trial spending millions of dollars they beat the case but damage is done already no label backing you murda inc finally responds but the public eye was fooled by smoke and mirrors but not the streets and even then they hit them hard with disses then ja released r.u.l.e spawning hits wonderful caught up and new York which is a classic record that no new York rapper can touch till this day but everything came to an end in 05 but after that g unit got dismantled by game curtis keeps doing the same antics for a few years after then he lost to Kanye West then after that Rick Ross beat him cause he put out better music young buck got kicked out the group curtis clowns him and records his phone call Lloyd banks starts to fizzle out and 50 is stagnant now his music career is over and he has power and a few investments here and there.

@@justinstewart1828 I can agree with you on most parts but you forgot the lox were the ones ripping G unit apart in 05 as well Jadakiss wrote the blueprint that game used against 50 by relentlessly going at him 50 and g unit couldnt respond to kiss, styles and sheek g unit realized they were outta their league and lox was a whole different animal compared to ja. Let's add a few things. Lox had NY and the streets 50 dissing lox NY streets wasn't fuckin with 50 anymore they saying 50 can't come back to NY so 50 loses credibility with NY, the east coast and the Eastern streets. Chris lighty father was an FBI agent and Lighty was close to 50 and 50 had feds surrounding him wherever he went so he didn't care what he said in any interview. 50 and Banks go down south, talking shit on rap a lot records and big Moe on the radio and on stage. Fans are displeased and rap a lot gearing up with Z Ro, yukmouth, even Hussein fatal dissed 50 for that hail Mary joint where 50s verse is word for word 2pacs lyics from the second verse of hail Mary and the first verse of against all odds with just name changes from the people pac was dissing to the people he was dissing ( refer to 50s interview where the guy says to 50 he don't pick and choose his battles and 50 says that's sucker shit if he did, but he never went at zro or fatal) 50 loses credibility in the south g unit fizzles out down south as well with buck really being the only member still cared for out there. Game come into play and does the lox treatment on 50 by overwhelming them with diss after diss. G unit couldn't keep up. Game was already on the rise and built up some stardom and sparked the west coast scene back up had the mainstream and west coast streets playing him. 50 loses credibility with the west coast and big part of the mainstream. 50 and G unit is on life support at this point Curtis doesn't do no where near as well as massacre which was a mediocre album, before I self destruct before 2019 hadn't gone platinum yet. Animal ambition didn't go gold. Lloyd banks rotten apple barely went gold with 600k album sales and hunger for more 2 only sold 87k which ultimately leads to banks getting dropped by interscope. Yoyo hasn't done shit and buck had his fallout with 50 and before and after 50 would never let buck shine. 50 tries to resurrect g unit by trying to make them a super group signing made, mobb deep and M.O.P does nothing with them

Interesting!!! Competition always raises the bar!!! It’s a beautiful thing!! To compete at a high level!!!! Let alone Win...Like him love him or hate him Jay is smart!!! Always look at the end result! The person who laughs last laughs the loudest!!! We’re is Jah Rule in 2020. We’re is DMX in 2020. Jay Z in 2020. Is a Billionaire.
