What happened to Omega Strikers?
Omega Strikers is a free-to-play action sport video game by Odyssey Interactive.
The game can be described as a competitive 3v3 foot-brawler like Mario Strikers with a roster of characters, each with their own unique set of abilities similar to a MOBA like League of Legends.
Developed by ex-Riot Games employees and featuring cross-play across all platforms, Omega Strikers beta launched in late 2022 with an ambitious marketing campaign.
Odyssey Interactive went all out with their marketing efforts starting off with a Creator Vs Event that saw some of the biggest names across KZbin and Twitch rally their respective communities to compete for the grand prize of being immortalized in-game with a custom skin. The hype for the title's launch did not let up as Odyssey Interactive would go on to work with Studio Trigger to create an anime-style music video and go on to advertise their game in a Nintendo Direct.
Despite having so much going for it in terms of both marketing and hype, Omega Strikers failed to retain player numbers and growth in the months after launch which has left many to wonder how a game with so much ambition and momentum behind met such a sudden demise.
In today's video, we will look into the rapid rise and tragic fall of Omega Strikers.

As the tournament organizers for omega strikers' entire public lifespan, this video brings mixed emotions. So many missteps by the developers, but also, at its core, Omega Strikers has such a strong concept that keeps its dedicated players. It definitely got a lot of attention before it was ready for general audiences, no tutorial (tutorial still kinda sucks now) lame practice mode, no options for custom games, and a lack of common team-play features. The lack of any kind of single-player/co-op/bot mode for people to try the game without apprehension was likely the biggest death-knell. Casuals aren't that interested in trying a type of game they're not familiar with by getting stomped and flamed by other players until they get the hang of it. You NEED some way to ease them in, and regardless of what the sweats might try to tell you, casuals are the LIFEBLOOD of competitive games. You need them to inflate the game's numbers and maintain a high population, you need them to get invested in your game enough to share it with others. We're long past the age of games where you could get away with just pitting everyone against eachother and letting them figure it out, there's not enough time in the day and there's too many other games.
@Neptas
@Neptas Ай бұрын
That's a huge +1 for me as well. Even the very bad bots in Rocket League are still fun to play against, because when you're a beginner, you're just as bad as them. And when you're good and want to introduce the game to some friends, having bots keeps the spirit fun and lighthearted. Way too many games nowadays forget the importance of bots.

I LOOVED this game. So so much. I only got to play one day of the Open Beta but was hooked. Then, was travelling on game's release, but I had downloaded it on my Switch to play. Got home and was grinding the ladder. Got up to Gold, which was a goal of mine to do so in years. Love the characters, the art, the stages, but most of all, the music! Oh, the music is phenomenal. Got my girlfriend to play, and a couple of friends, and it was great. But then, people stopped playing. The community got sweatier and sweatier. Casual games were just as competitive as ranked. And eventually, the fun dripped out for me. I couldn't enjoy a game, even if I was winning because of the effort I had to put in. I wasn't getting enough out of my time playing it, so I stopped. It hurt to see that Odyssey was moving to other game development, but I was glad to see it's in the same universe. So I keep my hopes up. I dunno if I'll be as invested in the next game as I was this one, mostly because I don't want to have that same sense of heartbreak. But I want to be.

I started playing OS right around their November announcement that sunset the game, and I am pleasantly surprised by how much more the game developed since then. An updated friends list/chat functionality, a 3rd season nobody was expecting, continuous addition of new items, and item/map rotations manage to keep the game fresh. Devs work hard to address game depth issues and as a result the competitive scene is actually pretty strong. I think this is one of the games that really benefits from having a friend that's good at the game because it's just one of those games with a steep learning curve and a high skill ceiling. Theres also the Awakening system in my opinion, it made the game unsure what it wants to be, it has a system made for party games while still being a competitive game making it a balance nightmare. Oh no, that guy got the best awakening he can get guess the game's over. or Oh no, 5 sets later my ideal awakening didnt even appear once. Like, It can't decide if it wants to be pure fun (difficult with the competitive nature) or pure competitive (drives the casual playerbase away) which leads us to this weird middle ground where its win harder or lose harder
@PlasticShitlord
@PlasticShitlord Ай бұрын
@@Bubbble_Bear honestly, I feel like the awakening system, as flawed as it is, is leagues better than the loadout system we've had because it'd just mean people would run 1 or 2 meta ones and nothing else (unless you're a Luna goalie main, in which case you're forever bound to be the Eject Button slave either way lul)
@Bubbble_Bear
@Bubbble_Bear Ай бұрын
@@PlasticShitlord On a balance perspective, the old system was better its just that people kept choosing meta picks for obvious reasons, they were too strong. All they need is some adjustments and it is workable, the problem with the new system is that the balancing itself is a gamble. Awakenings are free to run around being busted because theres only like 1-3 characters that are broken with the awakening but the 2-4 characters that use the awakening okay-ish can deny it. Meaning a good player can snowball the game just by being first pick but also suck having to put that effort in if rng says they aren't able to pick their best in slot. Not to mention, having to balance each awakening for every character is hard when each one tries to appeal to 2 stats more or less, Chronoboost is busted on Era, Octavia, etc. But its alright with some like X. Its just waaaaay too all over the place to reasonably balance or play out

I started playing this game near the end of its lifespan. On one side, I love the game, the concept, the characters. On the other side, the new player online experience made League of Legends look like My Little Pony in comparison. This game drastically needed a better MMR system, because tons of new players (including myself and my friends) would try it out for a few days and immediately get bounced off because we were playing against literal Champion-level players before we could even adjust to the controls.

As a competitive player within Omega Strikers, I put a lot of time into the game very early on in hopes that it would take off as a big esport... I always kind of knew in the back of my mind as I competed that there was little chance of the game actually becoming the next big esport, but I'm still really grateful for the great game we got and the great community I met along the way. As a particularly dedicated player, there are lots of little things I'd have loved to have gone or been done just a little differently so that as many other players could have experienced the game as possible, but even though OS couldn't be the next big esport, it still has a dedicated community of players that love the game, and as far as I can see, they aren't going anywhere. As a result, the skill gap between newer players and people who played the game for at least 500 hours is just massive. All I really ask for this game is a better tutorial having a similar one to Rocket League (making people recieve the core from various angles and make them score, defending the barrier or goal from various angles, etc) just as neat practice to the most important foundation in this game which is just hitting the core

It being 'too competitive' is definitely a factor for me. When it's 3v3 and everyone is right there, the blame gets thrown around very quickly and very strongly. I play goalie a lot and the amount of times both the opposition and my own team would waggle around me and spam the 'FREE' emoji was nauseating. Especially as some maps just seem unfair if you pick wrong. Just had a game on the narrow, two laned map with the wall in the middle. The opposition just ran to my end of the lanes immediately each point, crowding me and the defense. Couldn't get the ball out at all, and couldn't save successive shots coming in from all angles. My team didn't pick characters that could KO them, so it was just that for 9 points and a loss. All while being called 'FREE.' Instant quit afterwards.

As a huge fan of the game, i think the main reason for its faliure is that the other aspects of the game didn't live up to the gameplay, and basically consisted of anime troupes. When your designs are inconsistent with lackluster graphics, there is no incentive to buy skins. Also if the characters and the worldbuilding is bland it's hard to get that next level dedication from the playerbase.

Once I saw it’s marketing, I was excited and I was not disappointed when it came out. I was addicted to it for weeks, since the day it released. Then it just…died. I still remember the day they announced the end of updates, only made my already terrible day worse. I didn’t know how much the game ended up changing my life. It kind of revived my interest in gaming in general. It actually got me to leave my comfort zone and talk to people for once, even if it was just online. Still sad the game has to face this, but the fact they still release content even after saying they would…well stop releasing content. @furyberserk

... It didn't kill shovel knight or bloodstained, yet yooka layle only had one platform I think. Mn9 died due to some confusion and empty spaces. The buffs weren't explained, the bg and fg had mixed color, uninteresting design, some of the controls I heard were glitchy and didn't works, and lastly, most of all, the expectations were not a 2.5d game either with powers or traversal. People funded the concept without the end result being feasible. Some would dash to absorb and still get hit, or need frame perfect dashes to avoid instakills and traps, you can't run and shoot, it bricked the 3ds, the alt fire was useless. The list goes on. But the dlc clawgirl was said to be entirely hype.

Thinking the "too much platform" killed Mighty No 9 or OS is silly. Both had issues deep into their gameplay the dev couldn't fix (although it wasn't as bad in OS of course). Those have nothing to do with the platforms. A bad gameplay on PC or a bad gameplay on Mobile is still bad gameplay.
@CharlesAngelus
@CharlesAngelus Ай бұрын
@@NeptasThe multiple platforms on launch defintely exacerbated the game's inherent issues. For each additional platform one works on, you need more time to program, QA test, and more. Like if there's a problem on one platform out of three, that's still going to hold back development on the other 2 versions. MM9 basically divided it's development time in 5 trying to target every possible platform on launch, which then led to them skimping out on focus testing, level design, and the cinematics to get all versions of the game on time, even after their innumerable delays. I mean I do agree that the game design seemed to inherently suck ass, but it's a bit more nuanced than "the gameplay was worse on one platform"

@@CharlesAngelus If the game had tech issues, or lots of bugs, your arguments would be valid. But it's not the case, game designers work on game design, and don't care about the actual platforms. The only thing that could impact game design are the controls, but again, the controls were fine on all platforms. The programming team did its job, the QA team did its job, the game designers didn't, and instead blamed the other team for something they were responsible for.

That’s definitely not the case. Persona 3-5 got released on modern consoles last year and aside from Portable having some minor graphical and sound issues, they all seem to have turned out okay on every console. If anything what killed Mighty No 9 had more to do with the game itself and the missteps in its marketing. -“anime fans on prom night” -the one above leading the game to get roasted by Sonic’s Twitter when the franchise was at peak mediocrity-badness, oof -the fact that dashing is pretty much the biggest core part of gameplay -insta kill moves -the terrible way sound is handled -the music for the most part not being stellar when Mega Man’s key point of interest was music

The game is so great, I had so much fun on it. But it always felt like I was playing a mobile port of a game even tho I've heard that the mobile port is barely playable because the controls aren't great So that might have been it's death sentence. Should have been made for PC and consoles all along, even now we don't really see a huge playerbase for Fortnite on mobile and PUBG mobile has it's playerbase in the East. It's pretty hard for a western game to make their game successful on the east if it's not by accident. On PC and consoles with crossplay, better graphics, without a mobile UI and overall just a pretty nice gamefeel that you can have on any game that isn't for mobile ... it might have done better. I'll keep an eye on their next projects, but it's a damn shame that Omega Strikers didn't had much more success, it's really a fun game

I’m glad the new games they are making are taking place in the same universe. I still semi consistently play the game and absolutely love it, and I especially love the characters. So much that I’ve spent a good bit of money on this game and I don’t regret it one bit. It’s also incredibly kind of the developers to convert all the premium currency spent on this game to the game they are making next.

One of my favorite games of all time suffered from a similar downfall. Battlerite was so much fun and i played it for a long time, but the playerbase steadily declined, I imagine because of the Moba perspective. They tried to recapture the fire with a battle royale mode but it didnt work out too well. Happy for the studio though, theyre making V Rising now and that seems to have its own success.

Played the beta with friends and during creator tournament and really enjoyed the game. Near the end started feeling lack of variety but still enjoyed the experience. Didn’t come back to the game until some time after the actual release and by that time the skill gap between new/returning players and the active player base was too high - didn’t feel as casual and felt like it would take too much time to improve enough to compete. Overall the game has a great concept, unique and well designed characters and fun gameplay. The problems are lack of variety and not being new player friendly due to the high skill level of active players.

If you wanted to have a squad (the only way you should be playing ranked), you had to try to find someone in the discord server which was nightmare-ish tbh. I played prior to the Vyce and Octavia release. I liked what I played, but it had issues like a lack of feedback from in-game stimuli, a frantic main menu that required a degree to operate, some strikers were just TOO powerful (those damn blobs…), and the soullessness of in-game animations. That last point in particular is a real shame because these characters look so awesome and deserved the same amount of expression as Studio TRIGGER gave them.

They accidentally made a game that had too much genuine competitive integrity for mass appeal. I put almost 500 hours into OS and ended up around Mid Diamond, occasionally hitting Challenger. It was a fantastic and unique experience but it definitely was too competitive and punishing for mass markets. I loved it and still do but I don't know how and product can be hardcore PvP and still attract a huge following. It's always going to be a dedicated niche.

I played OS when it came out in closed beta, it was really fun and interesting concept-wise, but the top-down, sideways view felt awkward in the long run. Ultimately, I'm glad they're keeping the world they created going because they've struck gold with that. It feels as recognizable and charming as LoL, without feeling like a copy.

I really loved this game, I rarely play a game competitively due to my anger issues, but this game just had me hooked (Also, rank was kind of the only mode that most people played). I put in about 300 hours into the game, and I kind of stopped playing due to the announcement that they were moving on to another game and the fact that they kind of said they couldn't fix their match making system. Also, it didn't help that they still didn't add a block option, especially since there was so many afkers and feeders. The game had so much potential and the reason I kept playing the game for so long was thanks to the community. I don't know if I will support their other game due to how they handle this game, but I do wish them luck and I might try out their other game since I do really love their characters.

Which I’m upset about. But I just hope, that some time in the future, no matter how many years it may be, if I’m still alive and Odyssey announces that Omega Strikers is getting a reboot or a giant new content update, I will play it to death. This game means so much to me. Odyssey is amazing as a team, and even if the gameplay might seem boring to some, it sure isn’t for me when all these abilities are flying around and the core turns red. Thank you for covering this passion project. Can’t wait to see what Odyssey is play testing either later this year or early next year.

I remember diving into this game when it first released. I love how fast paced it was and the plays were STELLAR! I played it all the way till I burned out sadly on the summer event as I wanted to record it and try to post the stuff for the summer events story online though life took up to much of my time and sadly speed ran that event on the last two weeks. I think another factor that might've kinda hurt the games longevity is that it did try to sell itself as a fast and quick game, if you look at what info is out there, the beta used to have games be first to score 5 goals wins (it's still like that for least quick play but the change to sets did kinda hurt it). There also at least from what I can tell not consistent content creators, heck the summer event was under slept as only one or two people actually posted the story stuff (granted not everyone likes dating sim type stuff but still). Plus, none of the big-name people like Alpharad or CdawgVA or anyone really picked up the game for the long term and only touched it for the aforementioned creators vs. Though it is kinda sad that isometric camera angles are frowned upon due to games like League as I never viewed OS as a MOBA. Regardless I play the game every now and again but sad to see it fall off. Hopefully the Ody team keeps up the good work on their next and future projects down the road. P.S. Loved the video

Its a real shame OS can't sustain a consistent player base, because it was and still is one of the most fun competitive Co-op games I think I have ever played with and against friends in. I am not exempt from being one of those that stopped though, being there from open beta and jumping in and out a few times. But its at that stage where you need to get 5 friends on board in order to play it...

As someone who was interested in the game from around its official release, I can certainly attest to the "MOBA stank". It may not have been labelled as a MOBA, but my eyes saw MOBA-esque gameplay and my impression was "I won't have enough time to learn how to play this game". I loved playing MOBAs, don't get me wrong, but I would effectively have to give up all my free time to a single one to learn how each character interacts with one another. It's a similar issue with learning fighting games as well. In that sense, I really hope the dev team can move forward and build on this. As a hopeful casual player, I'll eagerly look forward to what's next in line.

Tons and tons of noobies were thrown into the game underprepared and got wrecked by older players. Not even getting the chance to really experience the game before they'd put it down. Really Hope it can somehow make a comeback in the future. Definitely gonna keep an eye out for anything else the studio does since the community interaction was phenomenal. My casual friends felt like the game was too repetitive and frustrating to learn.

Its because the maps are always the same due to (no proof but only suspected) time-based system where certain maps appear more often in that timeframe along with being frustrating to learn because of how fast paced it can get (doesn't help that your opponents are most likely not in your skill level). It's kind of the consequence of not having a good tutorial while not even preparing you at all with the wonky AI that only works in one map that isn't great anyways
