John, the owner, took over the family business after his parents passed away, but he's struggled to keep up with the changing neighborhood. The staff say John's been sticking to his comfort zone, making pizzas at Sal's, while his kids run around the restaurant.
Fabio, the manager, thinks it's time for a change, but John doesn't want to let go of his parents' legacy. Will John be able to adapt and keep Mama Maria's doors open?
Don't miss this exciting update! Click now to see if John has turned things around since Gordon's visit and find out what's in store for this family-owned Brooklyn staple.

John's business was failing not because he was an egotistical maniac like a lot of places on Kitchen Nightmares seem to be, but that he was stuck in his old ways and still grieving the lose of both his parents. Glad he was able to turn things around and have his business end on his own terms.

John Esposito went out in 2023 on his own terms. Chef Ramsay visited Mama Maria's in 2012. I had the pleasure of visiting Mama Maria's in November of 2018 and had a phenomenal meal, begging my girlfriend to taste my entre. Mama Maria's was not the only restaurant I visited. I visited Peter's in Babylon Long Island in August of 1008.

Depression is crippling and it's written all over John. The way out can be obvious but you just can not take the steps, horrible feeling. I hope he was able to recover.

It's often obvious to others, especially if the causes are circumstantial, rather than brain chemistry issues. But it's rarely obvious to the depressed person, and indeed, taking steps to address it is often so difficult due to a complete lack of motivation in the depressed. I'm talking from my experience of myself and others. My ex ~ kid's dad ~ is currently quite depressed and has a house full of very organised rubbish (he is usually a neat person). All the cans here, all the bottles in that pile, etc. Our son currently isn't staying regularly due to his lack of parenting motivation, and I've offered to go clean up now for a few days, but he's too depressed to even let us in the door. We're trying again tomorrow. I'll just turn up and do it this time! Depression is a hard beast to wrangle. For me, it got better as I aged and learned how to manage myself better, but it's different for everyone. I hope John gets help to wrangle it ❤

I feel so bad for John. He's a genuinely kind and nice guy. He loves his family. And because of that, he couldn't move past the death of his mother and father. He was broken, and didn't have enough help to assist him to move on, until Gordon came along. I was heartbroken when he admitted the sign outside was not changed since his parents died, that really showed he was afraid of their memory being erased.

The chef is 100% to blame for the sick customer. Yes, the owner shouldn't be stocking rotten meat, but the chef shouldn't be cooking and serving it. He didn't smell it and sent it.

I think someone could make an arugement that even if he didn't john would of told him to send it out anyway. especially if he's handling stock. though I do admit he still should of smelt it and told the waiters ahead of time "no lobster tails. tell john to order more, they've gone bad."
@Ma5jay5dontxdoxthat

I would disagree bc the chef said he's talked to John about a lot of issues with the restaurant. The chef doesn't even make orders for the food deliveries which is a part of his job as a head chef, I doubt would let him throw something as expensive as lobster if the chef thought it gone bad.

John's parents definitely did him dirty. It's obviously not uncommon for parents to get their kids involved when they've got a family business, but they basically indoctrinated John from the time he was a kid, and made sure he'd have limited opportunities because he didn't know anything else, and had a limited education. Maybe they thought they were doing what was best for him...but you shouldn't clip your kid's wings like that. They have to grow up into their own people and be allowed to thrive.

I don’t blame John. This was the only thing he knew what to do. He dropped out of school. He didn’t know how to manage a business. Just because his parents owned it meant that he was best to run it. Making pizza was his whole identity. Seeing that fail right in front of you cannot be easy. It’s just a reaffirmation of your failures as a person and that is very difficult to face. He probably felt that he was trapped there since it’s the only thing he knew what to do. He knew deep inside that he was unqualified to run a business. I love that he was honest about his mistakes and about the reality of things compared to others on Kitchen Nightmares. It’s definitely sad to see a long establishment gone, but that’s America and how business works. Wishing the best for him and the rest of the fam.

While fault could be heaped on him, John wasn't just arrogant or egotistical about his successes in the past like other owners seen on the show, but he was bound to his past and was obviously crippled emotionally and most definitely feels the sacrifice he had to make to help his parents many years ago. He obviously also feels horrible about his performance as it was affecting his wife and children. Hope he's fine now.
