The more I think about it the more I get the feeling it came from people who watched classic stuff (like the 80s voltron series) , were influenced greatly by those and western style shows and wound up creating an excellent fusion of the two that produced memorable, nostalgia inducing works. I still remember stuff like this, code lyoko, oban star racers and more. The half-bad-half-good part is that even though a lot of stuff today is super generic feeling and kinda garbage(with maybe a gem or two, even if it's got the calarts cutesy style) , there's plenty of stuff like this still floating on the internet somewhere to watch.

Yeah I won't pretend this show was some kind of masterpiece. But it wasn't trying to be as structured as teen titains but it feels like he wanted it to be. I mean the show was basically the incarnation of Parody and many of the episodes existed to parody other works. This is part of why the narrative is rather disjointed as many episodes exist because "this other thing did a thing". Again I can't say it makes the show high quality especially from a story telling perspective ... but if you just took it an episode at a time many of them were just fun to watch. That being said there were some TERRIBLE and I mean down right horrible episodes. Or they'd throw in some jokes or twists that just did not work at all. But overall I wouldn't call this show bad ... more like random nonsense that was entertaining to watch in it's raw chaos. I mean come on it's Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go! Shit, I’d argue Hyperforce at its darkest, was was more depressing, despair inducing, and creepy than anything Teen Titans did. ‘The End’ 3-parter, and the one where the team disappears one by one when the tower has blackout, and ESPECIALLY ‘Haunted’ (which had to be THE darkest episode) and the future episode where the team actually fell apart because starfire went into the future to follow light (definitely the most depressing and Heaviest episode), never got to the darkness of Hyperforce. With Hyperforce, perhaps everything would be saved by an ex-machina, or an ass-pull, but the show knew how to put nuanced nihilism and inevitability into its dark moments. Some of the multi-parters fell even longer than they were because they actually were able to portray the right amount of hopelessness and despair whenever they pulled references to the Eldritch/cosmic horror genre, in a kids show! 😳

I think a big part of it was just how creepy and atmospheric it could be at times, like for a show about cyborg monkeys saving the city with a giant robot a lot of these episodes were really unsettling and they took everything that happened incredibly seriously. Teen Titans was and still is the better show, but I was always drawn to the darker aspects of it way more than the goofier one-offs, and there's something to be said about a series where every episode had that darker tone to it. Even now, the Skeleton King still feels like a really intimidating and unsettling villain and while they should have escalated the threat more at the end, there's still something to be said about just having a really cool simple but effective antagonist stay relevant as things go on. Like remember when Teen Titans did the whole Brother Blood thing? Sure, they tried something new, but that guy never really felt as cool or intimidating as Slade. Super Robot Monkey Team was a show that knew to keep coming back to their Slade because they just never really stopped being as imposing of a threat. But yeah, crap like the Sun Riders aging into near-death and The Skeleton King ripping out his eyes and stuff to make monsters will always stick with me for just how unsettling the imagery was, I guess.
@YamiTasher3 жыл бұрын
Ahh it's finally here! haha, you weren't kidding when you suggested we were gonna be opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to this show I'm ngl, I had totally forgotten that the first episode just pretty much just dumps you in the middle of everything with absolutely no explaination as to who these characters are. But I? kind of like? that it just jumps in at a seemingly random point when Chiro has already found, become the leader of and befriended the monkeys. In fact it's downright hilarious that they actualy just basically explain the backstory to that in the opening song xD I watched this as a kiddo so I really checked out on the overall plot, and I didn't follow it much anyway because the episodes I watched were sparadic but I adored the art style. But my main reason why my love for it stayed alive over the years whereas other shows just faded out of my mind was because of the characters. Mostly the monkeys, actually. I didn't care for plot, I cared for character and they showed a lot of it - each one has a unique personality and even though some of those personalities would clash more than others (like Gibson and Otto), they always showed that they cared for each other. I loved their interactions, I loved when they showed devolopement or backstory. The show had some good ideas, even if they weren't executed very well. The fact that the skeleton king was actually their creator who had been turned evil/corrupted by darkness was a cool twist, and very sad when you think about it. Watching a parental figure slowly spiral out of control and end up having to go against them even as they try to destroy you is an upsetting thought. I love it. The fandom is a quiet one, but they have some very detailed and cool theories on the lore and characters. I wish this show had been given more of a chance to sort itself out and smooth out it's plot, it had a lot of potential. Still. I like it the way it is, a mess and all. Better than having it be rebooted into a gritty darker version of itself :) looking at you, winx.

Even as a kid growing up watching this show, I knew it was clearly a pastiche of a lot of old anime (Astro Boy, Cyborg 009, OG Voltron, super sentai shows in general), so a lot of the "out of the blue solutions" to things (i.e. deus ex machinas), and the main villain being killed and brought back so many times, etc always felts like intentional nods to the older admittedly dated writing of the works it was inspired by. Does that make it good? I mean, if you're not down for what something is a pastiche of, you're probably not going to enjoy it. I know I and many others enjoyed it for what it was, so shrug.

I want to say that the reason for the weird “dubbing” and choppy animation is because it’s paying homage to older anime like Speed Racer, which coincidentally looks like Chiros design is based off of (not sure tho). This show has a weird mixture of east and west influences??? Like the robots design screams American to me but it’s liked voltron/power rangers with its color coordination and everyone controlling a limb. Like I’ve only watched a couple episodes of the show so I can’t say it’s good or bad tbh, but at the time it came out I think the norm in kids tv was episodic than serialized unlike now, which may also explain why Teen Titans was so popular because there were arcs each season.

This show was made during the career infancy of its creator, Ciro Nieli. I don't believe this was the first show that he basically made himself but it definitely was one of the earlier ones, not to mention the practically miniscule budget that this show had to work with, tight schedule and the studio being outsourced, I think issues along these lines may have contributed to its less impactful writing. It is a show with its charm and decently written moments though, and from being a member of the fandom myself it's mostly a nostalgia thing, looking back to when we enjoyed watching it on Jetix or Toon Disney/Disney XD and I know that's how I enjoy it to this day. And yes, that is the skelly boi himself in my profile picture

@Anchutka19923 жыл бұрын
You do know that SRMTHFG was designed as a parody of kids action shows (and Star Wars with the whole force thing, yes), right? The review sounded kinda like blaming "Scary Movie" for using horror cliches and ripping off "Scream". Yeah, it was kinda the whole point. And while doing that this show managed to stay fun and entertaining as an action cartoon on its own, which is till this day a pretty rare occasion in comedy genre. Thats why it is still liked and remembered by people.

@Will N I mean sure, but ultimately Toonami is 100% responsible for the anime boom in the west during the late 90’s and early 2000’s. My point still stands you can’t tell that story and not mention that block. There’s a reason why Toonami still exist in 2021 and everyone else just a distant memory
@tylerdestroyer913 жыл бұрын
@Will N the reason why the broadcast networks even turned there heads for anime was because of the success of Pokemon & Dragonball Z. None of them air anime regularly anymore. Toonami went away in 08 and came back to adult swim in 2012. Adult Swim is the only channel(cable or broadcast) that continue to invest money into anime(they are literally airing their own co production right now, FENA PIRATE PRINCESS, that opens the block. A show they produced!). Toonami is literally the reason why crunchyroll exists and companies like Netflix and Amazon continue to pour money into that market

I was always more invested in the dynamics of the characters than the plot... if you don’t really feel an attachment to their bond or are not really watching things for character-driven content and more so for worldbuilding I can see why you’d think it’s bad. However the appeal really was just the dynamics and the fantasy aspect added to the fun. The Antauri arc is one of my favorites because you can tangibly feel how broken the team is without their leader or mentor and you don’t know how it’s gonna be resolved... then when they all come together again you’re kind if relieved you know!
@gaukaiser3 жыл бұрын
One good thing about this show......Mark hamill really had a blast voicing skeleton king!
@Ballade903 жыл бұрын
I get the feeling that early on they wanted to make the show a parody of anime cliches but they cemented the name too early and didn't try to move away from the original concept, or someone pitched it as a parody and the showrunner took it seriously (enough anyways). They're the 'super team' but also the 'hyper force', the joke writes itself with the name alone and people tend to think 'funny' when they see 'monkey', unless it's Planet of the Apes (because of nostalgia) or King Kong (because giant monster which equals action), so only the real die-hards would care about the plot which isn't a profitable market.
@skootergirl223 жыл бұрын
Yea it is, back when anime was becoming mainstream in the west and dubbing wasn't properly managed like speed racer. Off synced mouths to voices and silted animation was supposed to portray a early anime that was painted on cells including reused BGs and character poses the name title was meant to be like a misstranslation
@zmaxx1233213 жыл бұрын
Honestly, from what I know about the production of the show, the season 1 had a really rushed production which explains some... inconsistencies , and the initial pitch was a lot more Childish and comedic, for example, Chiro was originally an annoying child that practically forced himself into the team instead of a chosen one teenager and skeleton king... welll, he was a bit like Lord hater.

Your being too hard on this show. One, it's a kids show--and two! It's---actually a fantastic show! Yes, the animation for the lipsync is bad. I think it calls back to early anime, but also--I believe this show was on a lower budget. From being someone who's trying to go work in animation you've got to understand that different shows have different budgets. Disney screwed over this show while it was still running. I never remembered it airing at a normal time, though whenever I did catch it I always enjoyed it. I remember watching the Stranded Seven. Plus, there were barely any toy sales. It makes sense it was cancelled early. But props to the staff on choosing not to rush the ending! Instead, leaving it to a big cliffhanger, that though irritating, means that we will get a sequel at some point. (Ciro said this himself that before he dies, he wants to make an ending for the show) But, I've been rewatching it lately as I introduce it to my friend. I'm nearly 20 - and you know what? Call this my nostalgia, but the show still holds up! The earlier seasons had some meh episodes, as do all shows, but god was it so wholesome and endearing to see Chiro have fun with the Monkey team. From the cute moments of playing in the water in episode 2, to the little words of encouragement that they'd give eachother, to the fun moments they'd have playing games. That, and it sometimes did subvert expectations -- one small example, is season 1's episode Thingy. I loved that a corrupt Gibson was actually the villain. The foreshadowing, while sometimes a little on the nose, worked to set up the twists often times. The last two seasons I think are my favorites, definitely. The story has a clear direction yet it doesn't have seasonal rot, instead rather a lot of really fun episodes like Evil Times and that one Halloween episode. The Stranded Seven, though wacky, is fun too! There's lots of cute fun moments. The robot monkeys are all endearing to me and I love them dearly. The first episode is pretty bad, yea, but many pilot episodes aren't really the best when you think about it. That's why I just typically start my friends with the 2nd episode. And I mean, when I tried to explain the episode premises to my friends, they'd laugh over how ridiculous they sound. And you know what? That's apart of the fun! A wacky fun show with super creepy dark elements that just are brilliantly tied together with a distinct art style that still stands its ground today!

I really enjoyed your video! This is probably the most concise summary I've ever seen of it. xD This is my favorite childhood cartoon (it originally aired when I was 11), and I'm still active in our tiny little fan community. I can confidently say that the fandom would agree with most of your points: SRMT is a very weird, kinda niche show made on a budget of two paperclips and some pocket lint, and it doesn't always have the best writing. But those things are part of why we love it! It's so strange, and there's just nothing quite like it. There's also a lot of fun character antics throughout the show, it has an all-star voice cast, and it gets surprisingly dark at times. The fandom is very small, but we're still having a great time with this show, even with all its flaws.
@bloopityboop84343 жыл бұрын
Another note: I wouldn't really say that people *chose* Teen Titans over Monkey Team. At the time, a lot more people had the Cartoon Network channel than Toon Disney (my parents had to purchase Toon Disney as an add-on to our cable plan), and Disney didn't really advertise the show outside the network it aired on. A lot of people didn't even know Monkey Team existed, and it was barely a zit on TT's ass. I only came across it because it shared voice actors and staff with TT, which I was also obsessed with at the time. Not to say that it was objectively as good as TT (it wasn't tbh), but it certainly never had the backing from its own network to remotely compete. Just a little background from an old matron of the fandom. xD

This was one of my favorite shows as a kid. However, I do get why it turns off some people. It IS a really weird show. It wasn’t anywhere as good as Teen Titans, but to me, the weirdness of the show was entertaining enough to want to keep watching it. It’s a strange comparison, but the bizarreness of it is like that of Kill la kill; it’s so nonsensical yet at the same time, there enough methods to the madness present that you want to at least see what happens next. I will clarify that Kill la kill was definitely FAR more nonsensical and batsh*t insane than Hyperforce was. It was also WAY better written and answered most of the important plot questions presented in 24-25 episodes. I still love both shows though.🥰

Sorry for the super late reply, just saw this vid and your comment. BUT The Super Robot actually was expanded on more, mostly as background details. In the episode where they go to the planet it was built on, it was revealed that three Scientists worked on it together, and one disappeared, taking the Super Robot with him. Later during the episode with Captain Shugazoom, in a flashback to the last time he saw the Alchemist, he was still working on the monkey team, but you can see the Super Robot outside of his laboratory. Presumably what happened was he helped build it, and stole it to use with his monkey team.
