I love these cats! These white dudes by way of the Uk, were true purveyors of the blues! Eric Burdon was one of THE greatest British blues singers period! The work that he recorded with WAR afterwards is proof of that. Really soulful and funky shit. Chas Chandler's bass playing was on point! Their guitarist Valentine, was wicked when it came to throwing down Chuck Berry and John Lee Hooker licks, solos and grooves! This band was completed with solid players on drums and the organ as well. I really respect and enjoy this band. An outstanding complement and addition to the British blues and MOD scenes!

I saw the Animals open for the Rolling Stones in Tulsa, Oklahoma on November 23, 1965. They played a full set and, in this 15 year old's ear, outdid the Stones! Burdon was amazing; he didn't need a microphone to reach the cheap seats. His take on House of the Rising Sun live still resonates in these old bones these 58 years later. They came across as an authentic blues band, visceral and feral. I had to get used to Jagger's gyrations that I though took away from their performance. They had the #1 on the charts with "Satisfaction" which they closed with and it was a bitchin lick by Keef to hear live as a new song. I still go back and forth, both bands were great, their newness and focus was high energy. It was a wild time to hear song after song that are now etched into the rock legends. John Sebastian of the Luvin' Spoonful tells it to those of you who weren't around in the 60's, He sang "I'll tell you about the magic, and it'll free your soul But it's like trying to tell a stranger 'bout a rock 'n' roll"

What a great band. They were pioneers of British blues. Sadly they are rarely heard on the radio and lack the recognition the stones and Beatles received even though they went to USA in the mid 1960s. Eric Burdon is still great and his album he bought out ten or so years ago is in my opinion some of the best singing he has ever done. He is amazing live and I remember him singing with Jon Bon Jovi amongst other greats. Another great artist who has only been appreciated more is Rory Gallagher

Many of those 60s bands as good as they were could not have made it in today's music climate, but the Animals definitely could have.
@nuwavedave Жыл бұрын
Most bands today couldn''t have made it in the '60s. There were only 4 sound effects: Mosrite Fuzz, Vox Wah-Wah, Reverb, and Vibrato. We didn't even have Stage Monitors. Back then, you had to have raw talent. I'd like to see today's musicians make it without Autotune - or record an album on a 2-track or 4-track tape machine. Today's kids have it dead easy. We had to hike 5 miles through 6 feet of snow, with our gear strapped to our backs - just to make it to a gig!

I saw him and whatever band he had assembled also in Atlanta. This time around '82, maybe '83. I do know that he was 42 yrs old at the time and still sounded great. Saw him at the Fox Theater. I had a front row seat in the balcony which was almost on top of him and the band. I too grew up with the Animals and the British Invasion. While it wasn't the original band, his voice still carried the set. It's a miracle that he's still among us. I'll take it.

Tom’s Father was Papa D Allen who unfortunately passed away from several years ago. Not sure if Tom is still with us as I haven’t heard from him in awhile. He told me stories of traveling with the band in other countries and the “groupies” who would do about anything to get close to the members. Though I love War and most of the Latino community loves War and loves Eric Burdan the band was predominately African American, not Latino, I think War has like one Latino member attached to it. However, War was probably one of the first bands to take direct influence from and acknowledge the Latino American community including it's differences from the Latin American community. It's amazing how much the Love Generation "knew where it was at," and missed things right under their feet including Tejano (the music that would give us Selena and from Texas) and Salsa that would ignite a new wave of Latin music in the early 70's and was created in Spanish Harlem, that rose that the Mamas and the Papas were going to pick for their garden yet went completely over their heads. Tejano had its first albums around 1966 with Salsa following the year later in 1967, it's early form you can hear the influence of soul and rock though with the Latin sounds on the top, some of which would have been very appealing to Eric Burdon especially when you hear songs like San Francisco Dreaming. Yes, I do say albums, Arriba by Little Joe and The Latiners and El Malo by Willie Colon were both albums released in 1966 and 67 respectively. Also, Eric is the only one to even come close to actually imaging the Chicano look and probably not even fully aware of it either. Whereas the average hippie kid walks around with a Pancho while the average Chicano kid hadn't worn a Pancho since age 10. Also, something else I noticed is that you mentioned Eric influences from the drug culture but seemed to miss the very direct rebuke of the drug culture that happened in New York 1963 to America 1968. He basically straight out flat out says he's sorry and it very much seems like it's the Black community he's apologizing to. Though you see the early shades of this in "Winds of Change," both the song and the album, "Twice the Twain Shall Meet," is the only true hippie album with entirely hippie themes, "Winds of Change," is already rebuking parts of the hippie movement, references The Mamas and the Papas as belonging to the past, though the group hadn't broken up yet, but the writing was on the wall. It opens with what I think is a reference to all the deaths of Summer 67 likely in both the riots and the drug overdoses.

I've got an extenaive collection of albums from the 1960's including virtually everything by the Beatles and the Stones and I find myaelf reaching for the Animals records as much as any other band from that era. Burdon's voice has always been great but he was flat out awesome from 1963 to 1971 (including two years with War). Right there with Sam Cooke and Otis Reading.as far as I'm concerned. Johnny Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) has said that the Animals were in his opinion the first punk band. I agree with him. The other bands in that discussion like the Stones, the Who and the Kinks had the sound but were more refined and to some extent posers. The Animals were raw, scruffy, not particularly good looking and down right scary.

"House of the Rising Sun", "I'm crying", "Don't let me Down", "We Got to get the out of this place" (the unofficical anthem of American GIs in Vietnam), "It's my life", "Please don't let me be Misunderstood", "When I was young", "Bring it on back to me", "Boom Boom", "Help me Girl" et.al.
