What happened to the British settlers in the Patagonia region of Argentina and Chile? Today we're going to discuss the major modern-day communities of British decent in South America, including the Falklands, the Welsh settlement of Y Wladfa, and other Irish, Scottish and English communities in this neck of the woods.
Be sure to let me know your thoughts on the Falkland islands, as well as the British-descended communities of Patagonia, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. Thanks for watching!

I don't like to do disclaimers, but no offense is intended towards Argentine people over the Falkland Islands situation. My Argentine subscribers should already know this.

I grew up in Argentina and immigrated to the US when I was 13. One of my close friends in Buenos Aires had Campbell as a last name (surname for you Brits). One of my other BA friends had an Argentine girlfriend named Lorraine Jones who was second or third generation British but spoke perfect English (I could tell because my parents sent me to an English school two or three times per week). The British built the railroads in Argentina and took liberty with naming the stations and the laying out the city grids thereof: my cousin still lives on Boston street in the town of Temperley while my grandmother lived within a few yards of the neighboring town of Banfield. For a more fascinating and detailed history of this part of the world I recommend the writings of WIlliam Henry Hudson a native Argentine whose parents immigrated from Massachusetts, USA. A train station in the province of Buenos Aires is named after him. He died in the UK and is considered an influential naturalist.

Totally inaccurate to call the settlers as British. The Welsh went they for a totally different reason to the English. The Welsh to escape English cultural pressure. That is reflected in the way the Welsh Language and culture has survived. The Welsh government helps fund Welsh education in Patagonia and there are strong links between Welsh and Patagonian schools with exchange programmes for teacher being common. One interesting point is there were said to have been welsh speaking Argentinian solders involved in the Falklands conflict.

@@evandxvies DNA testing can still be confusing and its very difficult to accurately link it to tribal roots but it appears the average Englishman is 45% Germanic (mainly Frisian-Dane), 35% Celtic, 15% Viking (Norse), 5% Iberian. The Welsh are typically 60% Celtic, 25% Germanic, 15% Iberian. The Lowlander Scots are much the same as the English. The Highlander Scots are 65% Celtic, 20% Viking, 15% Iberian/others. The Irish are 65% Celtic, 15% Germanic (12th Century English-), 10% Viking, 10% Iberian/others. Note, the Celts ALSO came from Europe and replaced the previous population (the builders of Stonehenge, probably Basque-Iberians). These are just averages, some individuals will vary greatly in their DNA and physical appearance for example, some English in Norfolk might be practically Frisian, while some Irish in Galway are entirely Iberian. It should still be remembered, all the home nations are more related to each other than to other European peoples, although the Frisians are very close to the English and Lowland Scots, and some DNA tests show all the British home nations have some ties with the Basques. Hope this is of interest.

Then, about the British migrations in Chile and Argentina, there are also errors, since it corresponds to different reasons and time lines. In the case of Chile it started when it was still Spanish territory, since the governor in the year 1788 was an Irishman named Ambrose Bernard O'Higgins was also the father of the Chilean procer Bernardo O'Higgins, in his government he managed that Catholic Irish families could Established to live in Chile, (this was before Chile and Argentina were independent countries and Patagonia was settled). In the case of Argentina and when it was a republic in 1862, Professor Michael Daniel Jones in order to preserve the Welsh language considered the settlement of Welsh in places as distant as Australia, New Zealand or Palestine, but finally chose Patagonia because to its isolation in the province of Chubut, far from the English influence. Finally, the rest of British settlements in Patagonia, both Chilean and Argentine, were parceled mainly for economic reasons, for example to work in the cattle industry came Scottish to manage the gigantic fields called "Estancias", also came English to work mainly in the maritime industry since Chile at that time with the Strait of Magellan had the only natural path between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, which generated a bibrant trade of goods from all over the world. It should be mentioned that in Patagonia other colonies were also established from countries such as Spain, Croatia, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, among others.

It would have been more interesting to have focused on the hundreds of thousands of British immigrants to Argentina outside of Patagonia, which is still a very sparsely populated region to this day. They're deeply tied to the country's history, establishing entire towns like Hurlingham, City Bell, Temperley, etc in Greater Buenos Aires or places like Fisherton in Rosario. There's lots of ex-presidents with British heritage, as well as historical figures like William Brown and cultural icons like Borges. Other larger ethnic groups like Germans also have a much more significant impact on the country's culture.

Both the French and British settlements in 1764 and 1766 respectively were illegal, especially the British. France recognized the Spanish protests and ceded the entire archipelago, not just her half. The British settlement was more serious because they were not only occupying an area that was considered exclusively Spanish and at the time occupied by France, but because they were violating bilateral treaties with Spain that banned the British from navigating or trading in those regions of the world. The British settlement was clandestine, it was built secretly because they knew their settlement was in breach of international law of the time. They were allowed to return in order to restore the British honor and they finally left the islands three years later. Great Britain never had a legitimate claim and relinquished its claim to Spain twice before Argentine independence. The Spanish sovereignty remained intact until Argentine independence, when the Falklands were inherited by the new nation through the principle of uti possidetis iuris that inevitably applies each time a new state is born. Of course, the usurpation of 1833 by the British government was illegal and is accepted today by the UN to be a colonial situation violating Argentine territorial integrity that must be terminated.

I do hope all the Welsh, the Irish, the Scots etc all realize that the persecution of their cultures was from the so-called 'upper classes' of England, not from the rest of the English population, who were just as smothered in early times as you all were ! Nowadays it is with great pleasure & a little jealousy that us English discover all the history & fascinating culture that make life so interesting in those other parts of the British Empire of old. Class & snobbery have always been England's biggest problem, still to this day, and even now with the threat of poor little England all alone & possibly losing even Scotland as part of the British lands, we - the English- will need to learn a few lessons about humility !!! Thank you to Wales, Scotland & Ireland for giving us English so much to enjoy, please don't leave us completely....we tend to be rather bored without you & I am truly sorry about all that class business! The Anglo ethnocrats on this thread are proving the low standards of Anglo education today. If, many of you said, the British in Argentina are mostly not leaving (true), and there are no secessionist movements in any Argentine province (true), and I add to that millions of migrants from Peru, Paraguay, Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela, China, Chile, Korea, Africa, and also, steady trickles of European and North American expats moving there in the last 14 years, then Argentina cannot be that bad. Is it Australia? No (Oz is great but a bit overrated), Canada? No. But the number indicate the differences are not that great. With 15 to 20 years of even modest but solid growth they would be at 70 to 80% parity (today is 30%). Economics aside, Anglo nations are no longer much of an example when you look at the failing institutions in the UK, and USA, and remember it was the UK that burned liked a banana republic in days of uncontrolled riots in 2011, and its the USA which is the most dangerous developed nation on Earth (yes, even when you take data from areas nearly 100% Caucasian, the-crime and drug rate are magnitudes worse than any other developed country), even though the USA is still a safe society to live in. Yes, Argentina's institutions are quite messy and their big failing, but overall, it is not as poor as some here claim, it is by world standards a safe country (murder rate like USA), and more people head to the country than leave it today, and for almost all it's history that has been the case.

Argentina and Britain have had a love-hate relationship in the past. Britain invaded the port of Buenos Aires and stole a lot of money that never was returned. "Argentina" defeating the British invasions of the Plate river in 1806/7 helped the country gain its independence in some way. Then, until the middle of the XIX century 40% of foreign investment in Argentina was from Britain, making Argentina as if it was part of the Commonwealth. The British brought football, rugby, railways and some British architecture. Then the Falkland/Malvinas issue finally broke down relationships. After the war, the "Tower of the English" in Buenos Aires ( which was a gift from the local British community to the city in commemoration of the centennial of the May Revolution of 1810) was renamed Torre Monumental. Also, losing the war helped Argentina get rid of dictatorship, that being a positive thing in some way. And nowadays the UK is helping Argentina find its missing submarine.

The dictatorship from 1976 would have ended anyways since it was done by presidential order to get rid of the communist insurgency we had thanks to the subsequent intents of taking over by force by the Radical parties and then by both María Estela Martinez and Juan Domingo Perón's lack of control over the anarchist factions from the italian immigrants and the communist and socialist branches of their own party. Unlike in previous cases where the idea was to revert the argentinian society back to a previous point in their history, end a previous dictatorship or take down the political opposition.

You may find this interesting: Apparently, Ambrose O'Higgins, the father of Bernardo O'Higgins, basically Chile's Washington, came to Chile because Spain at the time considered catholic Irishmen as Spanish citizens, to spite the English. So O'Higgins, having lost his lands in Ireland, went to Spain, where he got a job as Governor in Chile, and latter Peru. This was possible because the Spanish gave the catholic Irish all the rights a Spaniard would have.

Yea I had heard about that but have not gone into depth on it. This is all after the Flight of the Earls happened in Ireland when thousands of Irish troops and their families left Ireland for exile in Europe - Spain, France, Austria etc. These soldiers went on to join the armies of their adopted countries and fight for them on the continent and in their colonies. Sad but interesting period of time.

Phil K no doubt there was Argentinian soldiers of Irish decent who still held a grudge for what happened with their families and took it out in the Falkland Islands / Malvinas (covering both sides). For example Patricio Dowling. I'm sure there are lots of Argentinian soldiers of Irish decent who acted honorably and in line with military standards. Also it must remember there are a lot of people on the Falkland Islands / Malvinas who are also of long line of Irish decent and came via British colonisation of the island. During the conflict soldiers from Ireland and soldiers of Irish decent living in the U.K. also fought for the British army. Irish and Irish decent soldiers fight in a lot of army's currently and historically including members of my own family who immigrated to the USA and have fought for a number of generations in the US Marine Corp. it's very complicated.

From a British perspective Ireland is called part of the "British Isles" while people in Ireland do not refer to Ireland being part of that at all. In Ireland, Ireland is just an island off the coast of Europe along with Britain and the other smaller islands. Even if you take the British view of the name it is a geographical name and does not suppose any ethnic or political allegiance like people in New Mexico are not Mexican even though "Mexico" is in the name of their state un the United States of America. From the political point Ireland was an occupied and colonial run territory of firstly the Kingdom of England and later on the United Kingdom. It was not politically incorporated into the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland until the act of Union of 1801 thus prior to that the country was Ireland. The puppet parliament in Dublin, which only Anglicans (who were British colonial settlers) could vote for and be elected to, seeded full control of Ireland to the United Kingdom thus forming this new country. As the vast vast majority of the Irish population (roughly 90%) could not vote for this it could not be said that this was done in any sort of democratic way. Irish people never democratically seeded their independence to any other government thus calling them by the name of their occupier would be questionable at best, much like calling anyone born in, for example Japanese occupied Korea Japanese and not Korean. In relation to the remaining part of Ireland that is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland this is a political discussion for another day and does not really reflect the discussion. I know Irish history is not though well outside of Ireland so the entire Irish history thing can seem a bit confusing for people not from here.

A few porteños have said that they wish the British had conquered them so they were a developed country, however I despise that lack of self pride and humiliation. Welsh settlements started by Michael Jones in Patagonia in the 19th century were in order to have a better and more democratic and cooperative life than under oppressive English rule. The Welsh are still second class citizens in UK, despite the ancient Welsh being the ancient Britons, living also in the land that came to be known as England. before the Anglo-Saxon/English genocidal invasion from Germany. There is continuing friendship and cultural exchanges between Wales and the Y Wladfa descendants. The Malvinas/ Falklands were taken into British imperialist rule by force after more peaceful co-existence, which understandably rankles with Argentinians to this day of course- I support that Argentinian claim, though it's difficult to see how a reasonable solution can be achieved at present; those with power and possession rarely like to give it up.

There was also no genocide during the Anglo-Saxon conquest but rather the conquered Britons became culturally English over time with Anglo-Saxons marrying high ranking Celtic women.

I’m currently writing an essay about the history of British colonies in Patagonia. Only a few days ago, I was reading about basically everything you mentioned in thee first half of the video. Most people don’t know that the Falklands War was meant to be Argentina’s show of force against Chile. Just six weeks earlier, the two countries nearly went to war over the Beagle Islands, Tierra del Fuego, and Puerto Williams. The two countries also fought a battle near Lake O’Higgins/San Martin.

Interesting... I knew it was meant to be a show of force for a faltering military junta, but I always thought it was the Argentinian people they were trying to impress. It's quite sad that the nationalistic feelings towards the Falklands stirred up by a repressive junta to try and bolster their own position still seem to linger so strongly even to this day.

And they actually thought the British would just stand by and watch. In fact, if you look at the news coverage of the whole war, you will notice that plenty of Western journalists and politicians, even _including_ British were essentially ready to just shake their arms and be like "Mesa bad imperialist, mesa not oppose". People were genuinely shocked when Thatcher ordered an immediate counter-assualt.

It's true what Joey says. The funny thing is that Argentine nationalism is strong on both the right and the left. Unlike Chile, where leftist nationalism has been on a tailspin since the death of Allende. The left in Chile is strongly internationalist and has very little confidence in political parties. The Argentine left still has a very strong party base (kichnerism) and has a nationalist orientation in the economy and society. I consider it comparable to the old left of Ireland. Here is a table showing the political proximity of the population of some Latin American countries. farm5.staticflickr.com/4714/38797104370_9ba36a2342.jpg farm5.staticflickr.com/4767/40564493792_fde3578c7e.jpg 0 means left ("Izquierda") and 10 means right (""Derecha). Therefore in the mean while closer to 10, the country is more right, and the closer to 0 is more left. Without a doubt, the countries where the right is strongest are Colombia and the Dominican Republic, they are also the countries where there is a better opinion of the United States.

Hey Masaman, I have been hearing that the lost colony from Roanoke Island were likely integrated within a neighboring Native American tribe. The reason why is because there were no bodies found, there was a word carved into a tree naming a tribe or likely a nearby island "CROATAN" and there were also reports of Natives that had gray eyes, spoke and understood Welsh. Of course, there has been talk about Welsh Indians before, but rather they really existed is rather unlikely due to a lack of concrete evidence.

Nice video, but he Welsh didn't establish a colony in order to make a "British empire", they established this colony in Chubut when it was already part of Argentina because they were given the territories by the Argentinean government so that they could populate and work the land. An interesting fact is that the city of Trelew means "the town of Lewis" in Welsh. Also princess Diana visited the city of Gaiman in Chubut in 1995.

When a population of expats is not exposed to fresh infusions; new blood from the homeland their language skills in the mother tongue tend to suffer. The natives from the area, specifically northern Patagonia, were Ranqueles, Pehuelches, Tehuelches and the Selk'Nam in the south. The famous "Mapuche" are the known Araucanos from Chile, they waged war against settlers for decades before the army took action. They went raiding armed with rifles bought in Chile in exchange for the cattle they stole.

In fact England did not stop at the 1806 and 1807 invasion of Buenos Aires. In the late 1800's they built the Argentinian 40.000 km railroad system, known at the time as the largest in the world. The Brits also build the port of Buenos Aires that allowed to ship Argentinian meat and cereal to England. In May 1933 the UK and Argentina signed the Roca-Runciman Agreement, a three-year trade pact that guaranteed Argentina a fixed share in the British meat market and eliminated tariffs on Argentine cereals. At the ceremony Vice-President Roca declared that Argentina's destiny was becoming the new gem in Her Majesty's crown. Unfortunately, another strong partner of the UK, the USA, called for the Monroe Doctrine, and the rest is history.

The name Mapuche or "people from the land" was first heard of in the 1920's to define the Araucano indians from Chile. There are political reasons to use that name as it means "people from the land" and gives more impact in their claims of land rights on the Argentinian side of Patagonia, where they don't belong to start with. They were instrumental in the genocide of many tribes East of the Andes.
