Another dope 90s rap group that fell to circumstances of rap groups in hip hop. Their initial album run was legendary though

Being a teenager back then what happened to AD is there sound wentout of style by late '93 going into '94 here on the East Coast was The Hardcore Era l & on The West Coast was The G Funk Era so groups like them and PM Dawn was over it's sad that they couldn't survive because nobody was interested in their sound anymore

This is why the Bon Jovi story is so fascinating. Jon was the owner of everything and everyone else were highly paid employees. Contracts signed, everyone understood what it was and the all went on to get filthy rich. Moral of the story: Put it all in writing.

This is what happens with most musical groups. There's one person who either wants more recognition, or feels that the group is holding them back from super stardom. Or 💰 issues.

They rode that early 90s alt rap wave along with groups like De La Soul and Disable Planets. I'd put Fugees in that category too. But the gangsta rap shift ended their run. Its sad cuz I love Arrested Development.

Arrested Development is the greatest hip hop group of all time. They made incredible music for everyone to listen to. People Everyday and Tennessee is still in my playlist.
@thescatman5029Күн бұрын
And Afrocentric hip hop group with positive lyrics, a song about the rural South (Tennessee), a Sly Stone remake with a dope hip hop hook (People Everyday), and a Baba in the group (elder) gave Arrested Development both age and generational appeal.

Their growth wasn’t stunted. People allowed negativity and ignorance to consume them. Nobody wanted to listen to positive music anymore.
@davidgerald1338 күн бұрын
B*llS*t.. they were WHACK. They were a one hit wonder. TENNESSEE was a classic, People Everyday was a hit because of the Sly Stone sample Everyday People so they got to pretend they were talented rapping over it. MR. Wendell was the beginning of the end because it signaled they were out of ideas and it was a HORRIBLEY corny song. That ZumawallaDingALing Album was GARBAGE. Plenty of positive Consciousness came after them. Common's whole career came after AD. So did The Fugees, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, The Roots

Another KZbin essayist called Todd In Shadows claims the group lacked empathy and understanding of poor black people. It's a criticism that's leveled at most "conscious" rappers. Especially the "hotep" and hotep adjacent rappers. Others say their sophomore album is a hidden jem. I personally think both points are true. But, come to your own conclusions 🤷🏾♂️.

Honestly....the "Zinggalamadunni" album production wise was great. But i think why it failed cuz after the group's success for the first album...if suffered what i call the "Svengali" or "Sophomore Jinx" People felt like that album was too conscious...too in your face....too preachy. One thing about our people....some of us dont want to be beaten over our heads with social & political narratives over dope beats. They just wish to bop their heads to the beat...sing the hooks & dance to the music.....so that album failed.....!!!!! 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
@blackdragon68 күн бұрын
Their second album was legit good, but the preachy criticism was true tho. Another KZbin essayist Todd In Shadows said the group lacked empathy and understanding of poor black people. It's a criticism that's leveled at most "conscious" rappers. Especially the "hotep" and hotel adjacent rappers.
@Notorious_G.O.D_768 күн бұрын
@blackdragon6 As conscious as they were. Listening to "Arrested Development" was still an awesome group which brought us dope beats & one helluva of a stage shows. I like how conscious they were... Rap doesn't always have to be "Braggadocios" or "Mafioso". Sometimes hearing a conscious song with some substance is all that we need to hear. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

I always use them (and Shai) as an example of music programming. Think about it. Everybody and they mama heard they debut LP. You definitely know the singles. This band was inescapable in '92. They sophomore effort came out 2 years later and...crickets. Don't nobody know it. Hell, I remember seeing the CD in stores and skipping right over it. Why is that? There is a reason to that. I do not believe in the notion of a "sophomore jinx" because I know for a fact that if the label wants yo' effort to succeed, they gon make it succeed. And it's as simple as that. Things moved slower decades ago so artists did not have to release music every other week due to low attention spans and burnout. The reason why nobody knows they sophomore effort is because the label was coo' on them. Man, the early '90s. All of that balance and variety we had. I could not live w/o music. Anyhow, I still have they debut LP on cassette tape in my vanity for sentimental reasons. It means the world to me. Just decades of sweet, warm memories.

@rayedmonds61089 күн бұрын
I agree with this. As a kid I had no idea A.D. were from the south. They weren't loud and proud about it the way groups from California and New York were. Groups like EPMD and NWA let it be known loud and proud where they were from.
