Was an extra on the 2 hour pilot movie. Sat in the squad for a bit, apparently had just been finished before start of filming. Had the pleasure of sitting in a real one three years later doing my field paramedic internship with LA County. Go squad 47 Temple City!🚒💨
@bandit252-4 жыл бұрын
I know most of the older fans know this, but for those newer fans and those that are brand new fans. At the time of filming, the original engine used was actual LA county engine 60 which was based at Universal studios lot. Magnet decals were used during filming. The number 51 was used because at that time there was no 51 in the LAcoFD. The squad was originally to be built by LAcoFd, but due to scheduling delays Universal studios built the truck using LAcoFD blueprints. After the show became popular, the studio purchased a Ward LaFrance to keep up with current LAcoFD apparatus being used at that time. After the show ended, both units were gifted to the LA County FD. Squad 51, which was not in good shape was used as a spare Paramedic squad for the FD and engine 51 ended up at Yosemite National Park. Eventually the LA county museum was able to obtain squad 51, engine 51, and engine 60 and have restored the vehicles largely funded by donations. Squad 51 on permanent display with the engines being rotated out at various times. Information provided comes from combination of interviews, newsletters, and articles found both online and in print.

A little history about Squad 51. While other fire apparatus where mostly LACOFD in "disguise", like the Crown used as Engine 51, was often E-60 or E-127 and where actual owned and operated by the Fire Department. However, when it came to Squad 51, they did have any to "loan" out. What they did though, was provide the plans (blueprints) for it. Universal Studios built (and owned) Squad 51 (used in the show). After the show had ended, they no longer needed it, it was given to the LACOFD, and was used as a reserve rig for several years. For Engine 51, a WARD LaFrance (there also was an American LaFrance who built fire apparatus). At the the department was adding them the fleet, and Ward LaFrance gave the Studio a rig. This allowed them not to take regular rigs out of service, and Universal owned both of them. E-51 went on to serve at Yosemite National Park, before being returned to the Museum. As for the "other" squads, in the pilot Johnny was assigned to the squad at Station 10. They where two different rigs.

I'm a 70's child and I remember this show, have it on DVD now and watch once in a while. All early gen x'rs grew up on this stuff. I also grew up in a dodge D200 series pickup truck that was our family truck. I do a double take every time I see that grill. A lot of the D series Dodges didn't have that particular grill, they had a different looking one. I can also say the Gage and Desoto would have probably needed their bandages if they had reached under the front bumper of that truck at the corner when washing it. Some of them at least have a razor sharp burr right there from when the bumper was made. You have a nice sharp chrome plated scalpel that Bracket would be proud of built right in. I know this first hand.

The actual title of the show is “Emergency!” In 1976 after the 5th season the show was syndicated and was titled “Emergency One!” The word "One" was placed in the opening. This was to avoid confusion with the new episodes. Renaming shows for syndication was commonplace until the 1980s.

Mike Stoker was a real LA County fire department Engineer. The Fire Department would not let anyone drive an engine. Mike Stoker also had a Screen Actor's guild Card so he could work on the show. After the show he stayed with the Fire Department and retired a Captain. Ron Pinkard, Dr. Mike Morton was a Naval Officer and a Corpsman. He retired from the Naval reserves with the Rank of Commander. He said while Robert Fuller and Bobby Troupe were just acting, he could do a lot of the medical stuff you would see in the show.

My wife and I just looked at each other and tried not to do the rest of the sentence " Ladder 19 , Tanker 21 or a standby for third alarm . One of the EMT's heard us chuckle and turned around and I asked him witch of you is Roy and who's John . He also had a chuckle . He said that their dispatch was a BIG Fan and liked to have a little bit of fun and not just sit there when thing calmed down . I know that Squad 51 was on the scene of a call of a girl that got hit in the head by a baseball in one of the final episodes. This one scene in particular of an jet engine landed on the Squad while it's sitting in the driveway. The episode is entitled "Emergency!" Survival on Charter #220". It was totaled in that episode. So that might be one of the original 51 Rescue Squads.
@289Mustang673 жыл бұрын
Actually, that was an older model truck that was painted up to resemble Squad 51 but didn't quite match in all the details. The lettering on the door was different, it didn't have spotlights, didn't have the chrome rails on the top of the utility bed, and it had small round mirrors instead of the large rectangular mirrors that would have been on a squad. Probably a wrecked or non-running truck that was bought cheap, painted, and used for that scene.
@derek56533 жыл бұрын
@@289Mustang67 That could be possible. But I'm pretty observant when it comes to different vehicle scenes in many tv shows (none that I will name here). I'll have to watch that episode again (not like I've watched it before). The reason why I've always liked EMERGENCY, is because I like that make & model of the Rescue Squad. It's one of my favorites. And someday, I'll own one before my time here is up. Lord-willing.

Donz Cool Vids Some one at the museum did not do their homework. The Dodge was a 1972. Unless they took a 1974 and time traveled back to 1972 to film the pilot and first 2 seasons. Dodge trucks for 1972 was an all new body which hit the show rooms in late 1971. Universal purchased an early model 1972 to build the squad themselves to have ready for filming.

@@DonzCoolVids it's really bad public relations with Fire Department if you don't give people that proper terminology

No it did not almost catch fire and burn to the ground the transmission line rubbed through it started spraying fluid a small fire developed but went out as soon as the transmission and engine were turned off the fire truck in the background is the original from the first few episodes and the other one is in storage waiting to be restored stop exaggerating

Poor video. So many inaccuracies. I feel if you are going to make a video about something and posit it online, then it should be correct. Do some research before making a video next time and it will make you sound like you know what you are talking about.
