I actually like that there were fewer SSD's built in Canon than in Legends. To me, it makes them seem more unique and powerful and also makes sense due to their incredible cost.

The Empire had access to the resources of MILLIONS of planets, including the vast majority of planets that didn't even qualify for official Imperial representation, so I don't think it's unreasonable to think that the Empire built a few dozens of Executor-class dreadnoughts. I mean it's just a bigger conventional ship, unlike the death stars, which required advancements in hypermatter technology to function. Especially if you consider the fact that the first ships that were classified as dreadnoughts by the Anaxes War College System were built prior to the Clone Wars. The only thing that limited those ships compared to the Executors was the Ruusan Reformation. However, back in the original canon, SSDs were still special. There were entire campaigns fought between the Imperial Remnant and the New Republic aimed at capturing or destroying the few remaining SSDs. This is how important they were, symbolically and strategically. I mean they were so important that the New Republic built their own Viscount-class star "defender" to counter them, which was heavily criticized for being too "imperial". But they did it anyway, because Executor-class dreadnoughts were no kriffing joke.

@wilhufftarkin8543 Sixty SSD's seem like overkill when you can just build an entire fleet of comparably cheaper and more versatile ships around just one with the money and resources you would have used for a few other Supers. Rinse and repeat a dozen or two times and BOOM, you got yourself a sweet navy! I get that cost might not have been a major issue, but keep in mind they were building two Death Stars, gutting Illum to eventually become Starkiller, funding and supplying various other experimental projects, and supplying a galaxy-wide army and navy along with the requisite infrastructure. That's A LOT of resources being guzzled up! But, if that argument fails, let's just say I think it makes the SSD more unique if there are only a few. I'm not opposed to more being added at all. Heck, I might change my tune about the sixty SSD thing, I just don't want there to be too too many.

@@wilhufftarkin8543 The Empire still needed to display the guise of a Republic Successor. So they couldn't just take anything and everything for their machinations. They needed to be smart about how they went about the spending of credits.

@@owenparris7490 But the two death stars perfectly exemplify the Empire's ideology under the Tarkin Doctrine: Better a few giant overkill things than thousands of smaller flexible not that much overkill things. This is exactly why many high ranking Navy and Army officials criticized the Tarkin Doctrine, but neither Tarkin nor Palpatine listened to them. Tarkin and Palpatine thought that the Galaxy is so vast and giant that no matter how many millions of flexible medium sized ships you have, they will never be enough to control all of Imperial space. This is where the obsession with superweapons and giant stuff was born. This is the exact point of the Tarkin Doctrine. Their idea was that IF we put so much credits into stuff, we might as well put ALL the credits into a FEW things that make the ENTIRE galaxy fear us, because all we have to do is to push a button that makes an entire planet go BOOM. Now before you think this is unreasonable, this is exactly what nuclear weapons are in real life. Why waste millions upon millions of currency if you can just threaten the world with global destruction?

@@scarletcrusader5431 The Republic deployed Star Destroyers, the Republic did Base Delta Zero, the Republic violently subjugated protestors who demanded basic rights. Not to forget that Republic worlds like Kuat and Republic companies like Sienar built the first Star Dreadnaughts and had the first idea about the Death Star long before the Clone Wars even happened. The Republic became the Empire long before the New Order had been officially announced. This is the exact reason why separatism was so popular in the galaxy in the first place. What's the de facto difference between COMPOR and COMPNOR besides the extra N?

I'd have guessed Thrawn didn't get a SSD because he didn't want one. He was well known to favor smaller, more flexible ships. would still love to see a video on the subject.
@zogar8526

Thrawn was practical. A SSD is incredibly powerful, I have no doubt he'd love one. Just not at the expense of other smaller escort ships. Which sadly is how they often were deployed. Even normal SDs were often left without their proper escort. So if his choice was one SSD or an entire mobile fleet of good ships rhat supported each other, he will take the smaller fleet. But if he could have been giving a SSD to throw in with the rest of his fleet he already had, I doubt he turn it down.
@chrisheitstuman6360
@chrisheitstuman6360 9 ай бұрын
I would think he would turn it down. They are horribly expensive to operate. How many ISDs which are already horribly expensive could you afford to fuel and crew for the crew? An ISD could already crew a Venator and 3 Victorys, or for just plan cost (as of wookies current numbers) 3 Victorys. Being able to strike planets all over is pretty important for outflanking an enemy. Is all that firepower nice? Yes but I can't think of any SSDs that actually mount bigger guns to make it a serious tool. They just mount lots of standard guns.

@@obsidian53-b32 No, I'm referring to a passage in The Essential Guide to Warfare (although the Separatist holdouts are equally interesting). The passage in question briefly introduced Operation Domino, the first Rebel strategy which called for planets to openly revolt against the Empire as opposed to the subtle hit-and-run strategy adopted later. Several unnamed worlds boldly joined the Rebellion and were quickly crushed by the Imperial military, these were dubbed the "Secession Worlds". Basically this is comparable to the Separatists during the Clone Wars as this was an attempt by the Rebels to actually hold territory as opposed to clandestine sneak attacks. Apparently Mon Calamari was the only successful world to do this. It's a part of the lore I'm pretty interested in since they aren't mentioned anywhere else.

3:40 seems obvious to me why Palpatine never gave Thrawn an SSD. If what you said was true about it being a symbol of favour in the Imperial Hierarchy, giving Thrawn an SSD would've been too big of a step towards favouring aliens, which considering that the Emperor was very much anti-alien, would've upset his followers in the Imperial military and might have even led to mutiny and desertion of the more fanatical officers in the Imperial Navy who were anti-alien.

For those interested, I have some non-canon Canon-derived SSD fates from my own personal canon: - Intimidator was disarmed and disabled and converted into an orbital museum ship at Kuat. After the First Order gained control of Kuat, they attempted to reassemble the ship, but it was destroyed by sabotage. - Annihilator was captured by a pirate faction that renamed it Liberty's Misrule and used it as the centerpiece for a nomadic fleet for a while. They eventually came into conflict with the New Republic who seized the ship, disarmed it and converted it into a hospital ship for disaster relief named Benevolence. - The First Order's Eclipse suffered badly from lack of maintenance and spare parts during their early exile, and attempts to modernize and automate it had mixed results. It eventually became a lightly-armed mobile prison in the Unknown Regions. - A secret 14th Executor-class, Shadow Hand, was built by Palpatine fanatics in the Deep Core during the New Republic period. They unleashed it on the galaxy after the First Order's invasion, declaring them to be heretics, and it was eventually destroyed. - I also had Zsinj's Iron Fist, but as a Mandator-III rather than an Executor. He attempted to use it to take over Mas Ameda's Imperial Core Remnant around 15 ABY, but it was destroyed by a combined ICR/New Republic task force.

fascinating video. Thx for the different perspective. I only say different because, i was a big fan of the original canon now known as "Legends" thx to the evil Mouse and my impression was a little different but less well researched i will admit. That being said, i also admit i never owned the dedicated SW fan materials such as RPG, or tech manuals etc, so I'm no expert however i did explore deep into the original canon expanded universe novels starting of course with Timothy's epic Heir to the Empire trilogy in paperback. Just to use that one ex-Canon (again because the MOUSE says so) as an example, I loved how the numbers mentioned in that series were reasonable in the sense that despite a galactic sized empire Zahn chose to be conservative and even explained in terms of manpower, assuming humanoid lifeforms which we know the original Empire was dedicated too per the Emperor. So much that the introduction of a "mere" 200 Dreadnought heavy cruisers that preceded the Empire's ISD could tip the balance in the war between the Imperial remnant and the New Republic. I won't dispute that it could be argued easily that such suggested numbers within a larger less defined situation fleet wise is way to small for galactic scale conflict but when i see modern canon suggesting things like 25,000+ ISD's at the Empire's peak, i'm sorry it just sounds like a ridiculous figure that some author of a tech manual pulled out of his head figuring well that's galactic scale. (if only the ST universe had had those numbers at Worf 349) This is the first though i heard of there being so potentially so many SSD's per original canon. That kind of messed up my thinking. I thought the number was much less, around 12 or so. Before Disney of course and the First Order BS. anyway. Fun video. Thx for putting it together!

I'm kind of surprised that you didn't mention Razor's Kiss in relation to the Iron Fist. It didn't really last long enough to need a profile of its own, but its use in the Zsinj campaign was probably at least worth a mention.

#AskEck: What do you think about the celestials being nerfed so much in Canon? Anakin on Mortis was almost like a full-potential Anakin, and then they just left the whole idea end there in the clone wars. (In rebels with the bird of Ahsoka and the World Between Worlds they did bring back the idea a bit, but not as much as they could have explored that region of Star Wars which I really like). Also are your thoughts about the Son and the Father returning in Ahsoka season 2, or maybe in the Mandoverse film?

I’ve always gone with the assumption that there were 12 or 13 based on the Executor class (1 for each fleet command and for Vader) and the others were based off of other designs with a lot of them being built after RotJ, with “Super” being used as way of saying that the cruiser or command ship or dreadnought (depending on the role) was just larger than the standard ISD. For example, the Eclipse is a super star destroyer that was commissioned after RotJ, but it wasn’t SSD based on the Executor model nor share the profile or role (its a unique shaped dreadnought while the Executor is an arrowhead shaped command ship)

Thrawn didn't get one because according to (Legends) Sidious was xenophobic and had a dislike for non-humans. He tolerated Thrawn because of his excellent tactical mind. This was explained a little bit in one of the Legends novels which is part of a trilogy telling the story of Thrawn's return to reclaim the empire's glory. I appologize that I can't remember the name of the trilogy.

So, the Super Star Destroyer has always been one of my favorite Star Wars ships, but when we learn how many of them there MIGHT have been, or even just how many we can confirm existed, and when the Emperor's tactic after the loss of the Death Star was "let's just build another, bigger one, and in 1/10th the time!", it does sort of throw shadows on Thrawn's concerns about tying up too many resources into single, massive assets, when a more numerous, spread out fleet of more adaptable ships would be better, when its basically almost never apparent that the Empire, wirh its tens to hundreds of thousands of worlds can ever really run out of resources, places to make use of them, and people to do so. Then tbe First Order, coming out of practically nothing, had Starkiller Base, as well as the Supremacy... I know that, in several ways Legacy never totally mattered, and certainly not since the Disney buyout, but it's kind of too bad that I don't recall Emperor Krayt, or some element of his New Sith Empire, having something comparable to a Star Dreadnought. I don't know what it would have been, or been capable of, but I feel like it would have been awesome, and given the Galactic Alliance fleet one more reason to always stay on the move, and not allow their enemies to find them, for fear of such firepower. They had the cool Predator Starfighters, so it might've been neat to see those launch from something akin to an SSD. 😊
