When leading horses we never have a loop in the rope that can catch the hand/wrist if the animal spooks and runs, just a little safety thing! Good looking heifers and good work taming them! Treats won't hurt getting them to lead better, just like big dogs!! Get a dressage whip or similar(no it doesn't hurt them....) give a little tap on the side to encourage them to move forward, give pats and treats when doing good.
@nellmarie983 жыл бұрын
Long lead lines that drag the ground are an ankle hazard also. My sophomore year of high school I was at a livestock show and my long lead line got wrapped around my leg and my calf took off dragging me behind. My steer spooked when a guy on a motorcycle came driving through the area we were taking the calves to after the show to wash the product out of their hair, the driver revved it up behind a group of us leading our calves and they bolted. No matter how tame your animals are, you can't get away from the human wild card.

I was just going to say that! That scared me how he did the lead rope. Gather the extra rope like an accordion. A friend of our family their daughter did that, the pony took off and it ended up wrapping around her wrist and is not good to this day! Have you tried using a show whip to tap them while walking. Have lead in right hand and whip in left and tap them on the side to make them go. You don’t hit but just tap. Love watching your channel. God Bless you all.

Daniel, Please read this!! You are putting the halters on upside down. You are supposed to have the end of the rope that slides thru the loop adjusted so that when you pull it, the rope pulls up from under the chin and thru the loop. There are nerves under the chin, and the halter then puts a little pressure on them which is what makes it follow the halter instead of pulling against it. You can see clearly at 5:45, 7:35 and several other times that you have it on them so that is pulling down from the top of their heads. That is why the kids are having a tough time leading the heifers. You can't man-handle a cow, but the halter applies just enough pressure to level the playing field. Just search how to put a rope halter on a cow on youtube. Not trying to criticize you, just trying to help so you have an easier and safer time training the heifers. Good luck!

@atlashomann54263 жыл бұрын
Linda Poorman, I show cattle in South Texas, and while the pats and scratches on thing sound nice and all it won’t help at all if they won’t walk. To make a stubborn calf walk you should twist its tail to the side, this annoys them and can help them to walk. Although you should be able to walk your calf without this by the time of a major show.

***Tip for training *** When the kids are walking the heifers always make sure when they turn, they ALWAYS push the heifer AWAY from them. Even if that means making a big circle to change direction. If they get in the habit of always turning right and pushing the heifer away from them they won't accidentally pull them towards them in the ring AND if the heifer goes squirrely, her energy will be going away from the kids. If they pull the heifer towards them to turn and the heifer gets spooked, they will run over your child. When they untie, push them to the right. When you leave the barn, push them right. When you exit the show stall, push heifer away from you. Especially in the stalling area! Those areas can be very tight.

You might want to get one of those little leather flexiable sticks that you gently touch or flick the calf on the back to get them to move and also to follow commands of walking and stopping. Not sure how to go about this but have seen people showing farm animals using one of these.
@atlashomann54263 жыл бұрын
Pamela Harris, It’s actually called a show stick, it’s used to make the cattle move their feet to where they need to be show off best to the judge, scratch them so that the are calm and don’t move and scratch them on their loin so that they lower their backs if need be. No one should be hitting or flicking their animal with a show stick, unless the calf is acting stupid and won’t stop when they need to.Also, they are made of metal wrapped with plastic, not leather.

When my daughter showed cattle 20 years ago, she carried a “stick” to set the feet in the ring. It also came in handy to encourage walking with a tap on the hind end. We also were allowed to show mixed breeds for 4-H. A steer like Wapper would be so easy for Em to show since he’s so people friendly (it’s a different class). He’d bring a fantastic price at our 4-H auction!!

My daughter and then her daughter each showed in 4-H. They used her stick to also keep their steers to stay calm and stay still while standing still while the judge was looking them over. They used their stick to gently rub just under which ever side they were standing on.....in addition to what you mentioned. I was a 4-H leader from the time my kids were 6 & 9 yrs old. Then they got old enough and became members of my group.. Now they are 45 and 48 yrs old!!! Boy I'm old but outside of their church, 4-H is one of the greatest groups your kids can be involved in! Well worth their time and a great investment of your time in their future character and integrity. Can't wait to watch as these two young people take these steers and hopefull win their class and maybe ever grand or reserve champion,
