What Happened To Tunica, Mississippi?

An airport without planes, blank billboards, strip malls and gas stations empty, Harrah's mothballed for the last 7 years, the Tunica Roadhouse under the wrecking ball now, trashy parking lots, burned out lights on marquees, poor roads, closed museums and a host of other dismal conditions.
I spent a lot of time there in 1998, 1999 and 2000 and it seemed like the fun would never end. I was through the area 8 years ago and the area looked different, but nothing like it does today. Mega motels are shuttered, RV parks are closed and basic maintenance isn't done anymore.

Still a good place to gamble. I worked there from 95 to 07, it was a blast! Everything was new and it was booming. I played in a band with some friends and we use to play at that Frank's Pub you drove by. It had a different name then. We'd play from 2am to 6am lol. All of our casino co workers would come out and pack the place.

as a person that has lived in tunica all her life I have a few things to say , there’s a lot of people that live in tunica there’s just different parts of it for example he/she started the video in Robinsonville there’s not as many people who live there but it’s always busy on weekends and the store still get attention but not as much because people rather shop in Memphis for the verity of clothes options, and threw the year it might seem that it’s worsening but in reality it’s getting better

This is relatable, I lived in tunica nearly all my life (3 - 18). My grandparents used to own some businesses there, though my family was in poverty. I did roblox dev for a living, and moved out at 18. I was the most picked on school when I went, and I practically had 0 friends, but I found my solace through reading, and other scientific interests of mine.

I remember staying at Bally's (I think it was) probably 1997, and was blown away by the size of the Tunica resorts. They were more impressive than what was on the coast at the time. The place was booming and shuttle busses had to pick you up from remote parking lots. Our live entertainment was a "Cars" tribute band from California that was pretty damn good.

I just went back this weekend and I'll provide a update. Of course the roadhouse is now completely demolished, RIP it was my favorite casino. All the signs that were gone when drove through have been replaced by sketchy law firm signs and some sketch "buy cars with no credit online" signs, and the very funny this all the casino adds are exactly the same, When I first started going to tunica in 2016 they would have new adds at-least once a month on those signs coming into town. The resorts casino is also completely gone, it's literally just a grassy field now. I don't know if I mentioned but they are doing a lot of "land leveling type work" where the roadhouse used to be I got a dealer to slip about a year or so ago that they were going to build a "water park" there, but upon further research Tunica was trying to sell investment bonds to build one where the harras used to be. I started casino hopping around 5 pm on a Saturday, so that's pretty much "prime time" The hollywood was pretty dead, the most disturbing thing to me is the entire building almost has started to look abandoned, the building needs a new paint job bad, paint is all chipped and faded off the building, very depressing look to say the least. I went across the street to sams town, pretty depressing there also, but I'll give them the fact that the new buffet and cantina looks really nice, but having a sign of "Card table hours" is really really a red flag that things have gone very bad. They didn't even open tables on Tuesday or Wednesday, tables closed at like 2Am on friday/sat. I didn't check on the Fitz so I couldn't tell you about there, didn't check on 1st jackpot, stayed at the horeshoe and I'd have to say that there and the goldstrike are the only places you can go in Tunica that don't have this eire "about to close" feeling to them. Horeshoe stayed full until about 1-3 AM "I don't remember" and the goldstrike was body to body like always. Tunica is doing very bad I can tell, I mean all the signs are there. Also the hotels being "expensive" I think isn't because people are booking, it is really just them trying to make money where they can. I think the big dagger to tunica was lack of mid week customers. You can be filled to the brim every weekend, but if not a soul is "vacationing" there during the week, it's bound to hurt pretty badly over time. I'm taking my best friend one last time probably this fall, I'm getting pictures in front of the casino's still left open with him so I can show my kids one day after the place just shuts down. I told him he was going to be shocked when he went. The last time he went was 2017 with my wife and I and we stayed at the Hollywood when it was still popping. I live like 50 mins from west Memphis and southland just expanded "like tripled in size" and added a hotel. I like the idea of tunica better, it was a great weekend gettaway and for some sorts is kinda a staple in my marriage with my wife, we really did go there a lot when we were dating and had a good time everytime. Honestly unless the casino's pull together and all end up being right next to each other I don't see tunica surviving. I really think that's what it's going to take, is combined effort between all companies still there. Sorry for the wall of text, I'm always looking up stuff about what's going on in Tunica, and I know others are probably curious. I really would put a 2 year max time left on the holly wood and sams town, and probably a 5 years left mark on the goldstrike and horeshoe if something doesn't change. Also if you happen to figure out what they are doing to the old Roadhouse property let me know, I can verify it's being worked on. Also my experience at the horeshoe was great If I didn't add that above, everyone was nice, slots paid "okay" for Tunica, Just don't seee the area as a whole making it.

Thanks. I was there 3 years straight, 99-2003. Fantastic. Stayed an entire month once. Great entertainment, house bands, great concerts, super comps, and great buffets. People were hitting left and right on the slot machines. It was always packed and so fun. I would travel south along the river and photograph places. Those were the days. If you Google county sheriff gets charged by the FBI for corruption, that was the time I was there. It was a great time. It's sad it ended. Thanks for the information.

When the Casinos came to Tunica, Las Vegas and Atlantic City were the only other casino meccas in the country. Tunica was a busy place with people arriving by the busloads from all over the South and Midwest.Texas, Kansas City, St Louis, Chicago, Indianapolis, Atlanta, New Orleans. It's when so many other nearby states legalized casino gambling is what hurt Tunica. It's sad because the casinos brought a lot of hope and prosperity to Tunica, and now it's like waking up from a dream.

The things that hurt Tunica the most was the recession of 2008 and other states legalizing gambling. Once Chicago and St. Louis got casinos, that hurt the tourism. Back in the 90’s and 2000’s, they had charter buses leave Chicago, stop in St. Louis, and bring people down every weekend. Now with options closer to home, they don’t have to travel. If people do travel, they just pass by and go on to Biloxi. Biloxi recovered from Katrina, and because of location to Alabama and Florida’s beaches, they’ve thrived pre COVID. They had 11 casinos in Tunica at one time. They’re down to six. The weekends are busy, but that’s mostly Memphis and surrounding areas. They’re not as nice and well maintained as they used to be. It’s a shame but the economy is everything.

You are spot on in this video. I know the area very well because I fish Tunica Cutoff and the river a lot and it's nothing but a shell of what it once was. There's absolutely no money being invested in entertainment or amenities and it desperately shows. No decent concerts and mediocre food is the new norm in the casinos and forget about anything surrounding them, there's nothing. Abandoned buildings with grass starting to cover the pavement is just about all you'll see. It's just a group of buildings focusing on cheap gambling with no other offerings and certainly no vacation or tourist destination. Comparing this place to the gulf coast is like comparing the Peabody to Motel 6.

Tunica has always been one of the poorest counties in America with nothing but farmland and casinos and no sustainable growth due to the distance from other major cities. In recent years there's also been a serious uptick in crime which further deters population growth.

My family and I enjoyed Tunica trips from 2013 - 2019 (Haven't been since pandemic, will be back in future). Three or four trips per year. My grandmother has been going since the 90's - the good ol' days - and when I turned 21 and got the gambling bug it quickly became my favorite weekend getaway. My grandmother, parents, and I would leave work early on a Friday afternoon and start the four hour drive south. We especially loved when the calendar aligned such that we could overlap our monthly comps at Hollywood so that we'd get twice the free slot play when the clock struck midnight! Always enjoyed the buffets too; we were the only ones in the dining area who seemingly never had the signature crab legs. I missed the true heyday of the 90's and 2000's but, in hindsight, I got a few "good" years in, I guess -- circa 2013 was noticeably better than the present day. The one thing I will say though - in an odd, weird way, I sort of like the quiet, desolate ghost town status of present-day Tunica. I mean, I like St. Louis and French Lick, Inidiana - two other personal hotspots - for glamor and glitz and all the bells and whistles and the crowds. But when we get on Highway 61 for those last 15 miles or so, it's almost like going off the grid and I feel like I can leave the stresses of everyday life behind for the weekend haha. If I had a choice, of course, I'd prefer Tunica return to boomtown status - not only for the entertainment value, but also for the local economy - but that "going off the grid" feeling is something I've grown to accept and love while witnessing Tunica's decline. Kind of like a glass half-full kind of thing, I suppose lol

I lived there from may 2010 to may 2011 while I worked at the Gold strike. My contract there ended right when the 2011 flood hit. Then I was transferred to another property in Jacksonville FL. Even back then, the locals were already saying that the place was going downhill. But compared to this the town was very much alive. This is sad to see. I remember staying and gambling at Harrah's celebrating a co worker's birthday. Seeing the ruins that are left is very sad. Btw I used to live at the apartments on the other side of the road where that broken down Harrah's sign is. Gardens of canal park or something like that they were called. And I remember going to that liquor store plenty of times

My wife and I would go to the casinos there at least four times a year, but the rooms had gotten nasty, the food was not good and the last time we were in one of the casinos we had panhandlers in the snack bar ask for money. When we complained to security they shrugged and walked off. Now we save the six hour trip and go to the Gulf Coast.

I get it. Parking lots are dirty no one seems to be winning, unlit signs, closed casinos, abandoned strip malls, etc. It's unbelievable how much this place has changed. I was lucky to experience the good old days. To think Harrah's has been empty for almost 7 years is remarkable.

I live close to , and visit often , a town somewhat similar to Tunica. Mesquite Nevada. The town is doing very well. It has targeted "boomers" and retirees more thsn the young / hipsters that just go to Vegas. It has worked well for them , despite being pretty close to Vegas. I grew up in the nearby town of Clarksdale and I was always so jealous of the Tunica crowds. It was a spectacle to have all those bright lights and shopping malls but it's sad to see where it is now. Just a mixture of competition, the recession, and floodwaters just absolutely murdered the economy since Tunica never invested into the community itself, just the casinos and luxury amenities.

We use this as our 1/2 waypoint to see our kids ..... Stopped at Southland and was disappointed in the casino's service... but nice. On the way back Gold Strike was our stop... older sure but the service was top-notch. I lived in Clarksdale back then when the casinos was being built and those casinos brought a glimmer of hope when it came to a higher paying job. People can blame the decline on competition from other states and so on, but we must face one truth about it... The economy has been taking a toll on our buying power (Wants and Needs) since The War on Terror AKA 9/11. The visitor count dwindled more and more by the year because people just didn't have "fun money" like they use to. Even Disney World has seen a decline because people just couldn't afford it or, bless their hearts, took a hit just to give their children that one experience that was once on everyone's list of BIG things to do rather if it was an all out dream or unrealistic depending on their financial status. That was one problem with the rise of the casinos in Tunica... The Resorts was not really rated E for Everyone, meaning that they were not family friendly. It was all adulterated spread out on a plot that had a boring farmland scenery between casinos. There was really nothing else to do except gamble and go out to eat, but primarily gamble. I'm not even sure if NASCAR is still coming out there. That was announced well over 10 years ago. The Casinos failed in Tunica because there was no variety for a FAMILY getaway. Building them beyond the levee didn't help. After all, there is a reason why the levee was built and they found that out the hard way almost every year they was open. There was not enough invested. Anyway, imagine what it would of been like if 6 Flags was there along with NASCAR and as a fantasy, one of The United State's biggest modern botanical zoos to be proud of and camp grounds along with the Casinos. All that land in Robinsonville next to the river had and still has potential. America just never tapped into it. Tunica County, though surrounded by farmland is a beautiful place, especially north and west of the town of Tunica that is all situated by the beautiful Mississippi River and it is indeed a beautiful site along the county! The potential is there!

I started going to Tunica about 6 years ago, mainly for weekend get aways with my wife, but I in essence watched the total collapse of the casino industry there, maybe it's got something to do with my generation not blowing their entire bank account there or whatever, but I always loved staying at the roadhouse and spent most of my time there. I think the Casino industry will revive it's self there, someone's going to buy the roadhouse before long I have a feeling, from what I've heard even though I haven't been since covid hit, the Casino's are booming. Someone will step in and buy the roadhouse, I checked prices for hotels at casino's recently and the prices were very high, should be a signal that business is either at a point they are trying to milk whatever money they can, or things are well. It was sad, my wife's parents went there when she was younger, and she talked about Sams town using both the other hotel buildings, and how it used to have all the shopping and everything but, it is what it is. If casino's are going to die out that's what is going to happen I guess.

0:39 Oh no, that’s not “the old Harrah’s” I mean I guess technically it’s is. To me that will always be the Grand Casino. Which was by far the best property in Tunica when it was still the grand. Once it was rebranded into Harrah’s it was the beginning of the end for the property and thus the beginning of the end for Tunica. Other than the Gold Strike and Horseshoe the rest of the Tunica casinos are dumps and the Beau Rivage, Harrah’s New Orleans, and even Pearl River are better places to go for anyone outside of a 2-3 hour drive from Tunica. That along with casinos popping up more across the Midwest and southeast. Harrah’s Cherokee going full live action really hurt Tunica because of how many people went there from east TN, North and South Carolina and Georgia and north East Alabama

This video is misleading regarding the actual casinos in Tunica. Currently, the casinos that are open are: Sam’s Town; Hollywood; Gold Strike; Horseshoe; Fitzgerald’s; 1st Jackpot (formerly, Bally’s). That’s six casinos still open. Typically, especially on weekends, they are all packed. Good luck getting a room if you don’t reserve early. It’s true, that everything in the area has been impacted by several things over the last few years (floods, Harrah’s closing, and Covid) but what’s being shown here is not what people think of when you say “Tunica!” The casinos are actually located in Robinsonville and the actual town of Tunica is about 20 miles away from the casinos. There’s a big difference. No offense but I just wanted to clarify that the casinos are still going! Why not film the actual casinos themselves instead of driving around showing every deserted thing you can find?

I left the business back in 2013. It has been falling apart since about 2009. There are many factors involved in it's demise. Definitely not the place it was in the mid 90s. 😩

The theory ' out there' is way more competition on-line and free standing buildings. You'll also read articles suggesting the area being overbuilt, etc. Some corruption, but nothing to the level that would have caused this. This was a happening area in 2000. Crazy fun, unlimited comps and jackpots hitting everywhere all night long.

I love the area. There's a rich history. Tunica jumped on the bandwagon and the area really became nice. I feel bad this happened. Look at Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee, etc. It's a sign of the times.

I am in disbelief in the current condition of Tunica, this place was an absolute boomtown! Quite simply Tunica was a gamblers' paradise that offered some of the best video poker odds in the entire country, liberal comps, lots of promotions, southern hospitality, and decent weather. My father and I would drive the seven hours from the upper Midwest to this gambling destination or fly on a Harrah's paid junket. We enjoyed many meals at the Paula Deen buffet, I can still remember having some of the best prime rib at this buffet. I have many fond memories with my father from our trips. Most of my video poker play was at Sheraton casino, since they offered the most complete inventory of full pay games. I also gave Harrah's some action since this casino offered full pay jacks or better at the .50 level. We stopped going to Tunica because my father's health deteriorated. Currently, I have little interest in going back to Tunica because most of the full pay video poker has been downgraded to short pay. Meaning the house edge on short pay games is too high. Tunica is no longer a value proposition. On one hand very sad, on the other my time spend in Tunica was some of the best times of my life.

I get it. Low winning percentages, no live entertainment, a penny machine paradise now with Dollar Store mentalities. I'm glad I experienced the good days.

@@ChosenWon I get there is more competition, a couple economic downturns, the floods, and the younger generation less interested in gambling (and more interested in other amenities) have lead to the decline; but is there more to the story such as bad management/corruption.

Casinos do not create growth. Businesses suffer. Gamblers coming in do not spend money anywhere but at the casino. It's akin to building on sand.
