True, but the image of scraping hard marble is not the appropriate one. If we exert effort to eliminate the ego, it simply becomes stronger. Only deep effortless rest can transcend either thinking or ego. This is my experience and that of my many meditation clients. Effort will always backfire.

He looked at the world and all the people and beings in it completely differently, as he realised theres only one consciousness. Like an infinity mirror. All different expressions of the one consciousness separating a part of itself from itself in order to experience itself. After enlightenment we become more aware about the nature of things and ourselves and basically we see what is behind the scenes as if looking at everything from a mountain summit, however, even after enlightenment some character qualities such as anger, frustration, disappointment, need for love will remain but not as powerful and plentiful as before the enlightenment phase.

Byron Katie has a "method" that helps frame or put our fears in to perspective giving us a way to manage them so to speak. As she puts it, we don't lose the thoughts... the thoughts lose us. Enlightenment is not very worldly practical! :)
