Oh God, where I live the psychiatrist only spends like 10 minutes interviewing you. When I was 16 I had some mild OCD and depressive symptoms, and after such 10-minute interview the psychiatrist diagnosed me with bipolar disorder. Thankfully, my mom eventually took me to another doctor and she said I was fine, she only recommended that I see a therapist. But many people don't get that kind of second opinion. I remember taking my bipolar medication and barely being able to hold on to my chair because my sense of balance was so impaired.

On my first visit I was prescribed Vyvanse, Adderall, Valium for daytime anxiety, Xanax for night time anxiety, Ambien, Fluvox, and Gabapentin... Every month I would fill the Rx's but only take the Vyvanse, and the occasional Valium. It's what had worked well for me in the past. I had the type of private insurance that would make doctor's drool. On more than one occasion I have been prescribed some seriously heavy duty meds like Opana, Percocet, benzodiazapines of all types. I basically just stock piled them because it's always good to have stuff like that on hand. It's sad though, because those doctor's didn't really care about me. They just knew that they could bill my insurance insane service fees, and I wouldn't even have to pay a co pay.

I got referred to a psychiatrist in the UK about 15 years ago, he wore those round glasses and a black suit, he really looked like one from in movies, was intimidating, he never spoke a word to me, it was his assistant that spoke to me, he was speaking to me thru him, I thought he was very rude in his approach, he didn't even look at me, just gazing at whatever was on his clipboard, his assistant just ticked a few boxes then the psychiatrist just prescribed me some random drugs. Needless to say that I didn't take the drugs, I was just treated as if I'm just a number. I wasn't in there long, maybe 15 minutes. Never had any follow-up with him as it would of been a totally waste of time. He looked very stuck up and think that he thinks he's better than everyone else and that he probably believed we're not worthy of his attention. After this I just see them as legal drug pushers, I prefer psychologists as they don't prescribe drugs. Mostly exercise and a healthy diet is much more beneficial as long as red meats is included.

I asked my social worker if I could work with a therapist and psychiatrist that work together, communicate regularly, etc... and he said "Good luck, those therapists and psychiatrists are like unicorns... Hard to find". This makes no sense to me, I feel there should be a law that psychiatrists be in communication with their patient's therapist in order to prescribe them psych meds

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who are specifically trained in mental health and are capable of prescribing medication if needed. Therapy (and therapists) span a lot of different styles. There's cognitive behavioral therapy, DBT, talk therapy, etc. Therapists are not medical doctors and cannot prescribe medication. Whether you go to a therapist, psychiatrist, or both depends on your needs.
