My grandfather did this but in a different way. He, knowing that the draft was coming up, joined the national guard knowing that he could not be drafted while in the national guard, and it worked.

FYI, when there was a draft the National Guard was by appointment only, in other words you needed a connection like President George W Bush, as his father was a US Senator at the time. Naturally once the draft ended, it did not matter, and especially since 2005 when President Bush signed orders making the National Guard units deployable into overseas combat. Now that is moot as any military unit will be sent overseas since sending volunteers is much more politically acceptable than even attempting conscription. Keep in mind the draft was passed in 1948, in the heyday of the WW2 euphoria. It only became under fire circa 1967, and even at its demise in 1973, it was still popular, just the media did not portray it that way. Today it would fail instantly.

While they did deploy to Vietnam, since the North did not have a Navy or the ability to attack ships, being in the Navy was almost a guarantee that you would not see combat. Sure they could run a few raids on ships in the harbor, but for the most part the Navy was safe, thus the needing of an appointment. Today it is not the same as all branches have trouble meeting recruitment goals. As I said, a draft would fail today, thus the reason it has been a non issue in the 19+ years since 9/11, not even brought up once despite more troops being deployed than in Vietnam. Of course the enlistment pool then was around 37 million, men ages 18-35, while it is around 105 million today, ages 18-45 and no gender restrictions.

As I am someone who's on the Autism Spectrum, I knew I was never fit to serve. However, the "United" States of America gives no f***s about its citizens and I had to fill out my Selective Service card anyway. I asked every recruiter that came to the high school I attended my senior year (Nat'l Guard, Army, Navy, and Marines) did I have to fill it out even though I have a qualifying disability? All of them said "yes, regardless of disability the Selective Service must be filled out." Of course they had no answers and were red in the face when I pointed out a classmate that had Cerebral Paulsey and another who was non-verbal, right behind me. "Home of the free, home of the brave"? I have never believed that, and never will.

As a Marine that served 16 years, I have many stories of guys that became very inventive on getting out of the military after joining. Honorable discharges. I don't know if I can list the things they did this platform so I will not do it but, there are many ways. Hint... can't do obstacle course. Can't shoot, cant do exercises. Can't learn. Nobody should be forced to fight for rich people's lies.

There is a huge difference between someone who voluntarily enlists and then wants to get out as opposed to someone who does not want to enlist. The easiest method of getting out of enlisting is to get a psychiatrist to diagnose you as having a disorder such as anxiety, ADHD, or depression and prescribe medication for that disorder. Thus you can not enlist for 12 months per DoD rules. You don't even have to take the medication, just buy the 30-day supply each month. However, that won't work if you enlist as the enlistment papers state that you don't have any psychiatric disorders.
