I signed up for "selective service" just because, yeah, penalties for not doing so weren't things I could afford. My parents had no money for college, so I needed federal loans, etc. My mom used to tell me if it ever actually went into effect I should declare myself a "conscientious objector", though I have no idea if that would actually do anything if the draft were implemented. In any case, I had just turned 18 in May of 2001 which of course was followed just a few months later with 9/11, and immediately I figured "welp, US is going to war, draft is coming"... but obviously it didn't and I've long aged out now, but there was a time I thought I had really drawn that unlucky deck.

It was different in the Vietnam era. If you were young, healthy, poor with no connections, registered with the local draft board, and finished high school or dropped out, it was almost certain you would be involuntarily inducted into military service!

I enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 17 and spent 4 years active duty. I held blue collar jobs after that. When I was 51 my mother passed away and I decided I wanted a college degree. I was denied loans cause I never signed up for the Selected Service Program. What a fight that was to get a waiver. Got my AA degree now and working on my BA.

Problem is there is no way to prove or disprove someone registered Selective Service can always claim someone registered when they didn't and likewise claim they did not register when they did. Some claim President Obama did not register, currently he is the only President to have been subject to registration who was not subject to the actual draft. Unfortunately the only validation is with Selective Service, and who knows how honest they are.

When I turned 18, I didn’t fully know about the selective service. I thought it was optional until about 6 months later I got a letter in the mail telling me was I required to sign up for it. The reason we lost the Vietnam war was because of politics, not because of the men that were drafted. We won every battle that we fought but the rules were against us, take a hill then leave and the VC would go back. Couldn’t bomb there ports cause the Russian ships were in there ports.

Registration is not a draft as the government is simply performing data mining, mostly the names are used for recruiting purposes as it is nearly impossible to force anyone to enlist.

At those times, data mining was totally different, as the names were kept on paper in file cabinets at local draft board offices. There was no effective method of cross-checking against DMV as those were State documents also in file cabinets so that is why they needed in-person registration. Essentially it became moot by the mid-1990s with relational DBs and totally unnecessary with the passages of the Patriot Acts and the Real ID Act.
