I didn't romance Astarion, but also didn't force him to bite Ablaj. I've been fighting for an Astarion redemption and just finished his story in Act 3 last night against Cazador. No spoilers, but I am completely satisfied with that story-arc. In that final scene, I legit teared up for him. The hurt, the rage... he got me in the feels.

i mean, she's an oblodran. which means she is almost certainly a psionic being. it would be entirely lore acurate for her to see all the characters as mere test subjects. even kimmuriel who is arguably one of the kinder drow in the overall setting (out of notable characters) still views people more as experiments than actual people. he won't act on those experiements anymore (keyword being anymore his alignment was not always as good as it is now) out of a certain respect for others. but it's always made clear that he views everyone who is not like him, i don't think inferior is the best word, we don't view our pets as "inferior" we see them as different, less intelligent, less able. but still valuable creatures that we share a bond with. thats how he sees everyone that isnt a psionicist and again. he is arguably the kindest oblodran you will ever meet

The craziest thing is Araj is actually NICE by (lolth-sworn) drow standards. She doesn't try to poison you and takes no for an answer. Also there's a lot of lore baked into who she is: House Oblodra was one of the houses trashed during the original Dark Elf Trilogy. They were famous for their psionic abilities as well as...interesting tastes. If you're a drow during this scene you get some insight into just WHY her blood is messed up: The Oblodra did so much fuckery with their bodies that their very blood is cursed. Basically, Araj is kind of a victim in all this as well: She's a hemophile whose blood is innately toxic. This might be why she's still alive, though, as wanting to be drained by a vampire isn't necessarily conducive to living a long and healthy life (she'd need to be around 200-300 years old, close to Halsin's age, unless she was a child when Oblodra fell. And I'm being literal when I say "fell." Thing got dropped into a ravine.) It's actually rather interesting that most of the named recurring drow noble characters with any sort of backstory you meet outside the Underdark in all 3 BG games are linked to the two Houses that got wiped out in the first trilogy (Oblodra and DeVir)

If you push him to get the potion, you can still actually keep the romance but you have to go down an unsuspecting path in the dialogue tree. When this happened to me at first I told the drow no, then tried to kill her to get the potion that way, but I couldn’t kill her at the tower. She just keep healing. So Iooked online if you could get it any other way, I read something online that said Astarion only has an extra dialogue scene if you have him drink, so I thought I was going to miss content otherwise and that he wasn’t going to talk about anything if I told him to say no. I felt iffy even telling him it was your choice but we could use the potion. Big mistake, hours later I go for a long rest and I get that scene and he breaks up with my Tav. I can’t really blame him either after how he talked about the way Casado used him. I reload hoping I can convince him otherwise, which you can, but it’s a strange conversation tree. While reloading I tried to see what responses he had to some of the horrible options and one of them was about how he thought he could stand sleeping with you because he wanted someone on his side but now he is disgusted at it. That was something new I learned , that he was only trying to use at first. Made me think if you get him to stay with you in this situation that he might still be pretending. Honestly not sure why he doesn’t break up with you in the one route here. I guess he doesn’t get to the conclusion that you pushed him to bite the drow and you convince him you care. Anyway so I played a bit more after this, but after thinking about it it bothered me enough that I reloaded a save from multiple hours ago and decided to not ask him to bite. Mind yo this is the second time I had to do something like that, because I did gauntlet of share first without ever setting foot in the tower started the assault and realized I missed a bunch of stuff and reloaded. I didn’t really need that strength potion anyway. My character is a sorcerer and my karlach and lae’zel are at str 19 so it would be a waster to use on them until they are at 20 from level ups. I was just being a little greedy. I feel it was worth reloading. During the new conversation if you ask why Astarion slept with you he admits again he did it to have you on his side, but that he started having real feelings for you. Anyway I don’t regret reloading. Even found a couple things I missed in the tower from the last playthrough. Hopefully this time I finally finish act 3.

I couldn't bear to make him, and none of my party use strength for my first playthrough here. It's all a consent thing. I did choose that dialog option too. I actually played it like this: it hadn't even occurred to my Tav she needed to be thanked. So I chose the somewhat jokey option of saying "For being so wonderful in bed?" When she realized what he was talking about, she said rather matter of factly that he didn't have to do anything he didn't want to. Because that was fresh on her mind, especially after he talked about seducing prey, I thought it was most appropriate to ask him why he slept with Tav. Following that, upon Tav realizes he doesn't actually seem super in to sex, I decided it was most important for him to know sex wasn't essential. I think it said all of those things. While I loved the hug, I also felt like it wasn't appropriate after I intuited he might not actually like sex.

This particular version is someone who had romance. You can choose if you're going to romance him. The game gives you so many times to back out. Actually, after he announces his intentions, literally every npc you have in the camp will be like "so you and Astarion, huh? You sure you don't want me?" Like even characters you have 0 relationship with will ask. They are thirsty for you. I'm sure there's a version for not being in a relationship with him. This is just the version if you're dating him.

I am a little sad i didn't get the option to hug him. Because god damn did he need one. I am not romancing him and after crushing wyll's soul by not dancing with him i feel real bad turning some of these characters down. So i hesitate picking options that could lead to romance with anyone BUT the character i am involved with. (Wish the game had a "hard lock" romance choice after a certain point.) So, when I got this scene in my first playthrough, my character's jealous streak FLARED to life and they did reply with 'yes, all mine' as a warning 😂He notably did not disapprove of this, presumably because the game recognises jealousy is a possibility at this point. My character then proceeded to tell her to eff off, basically, and I got approval from telling her 'he said no, there is nothing more to discuss'. I missed out on the earlier approval from saying he's his own person, but I still got this romance progression scene after and it made me die of feels. You will only get disapproval if you say 'he does what I say if that's what you mean' and then again, if you make him bite her (and he will dump you).

Romancing Astarion, if you have him bite her he will then later on at camp try to break up with you. Considering his past and trauma I felt really bad having him bite her, but I couldn’t pass up the +2 strength. Also, you can also salvage the relationship if you pick the correct dialogues.

I'm not going to lie, I made him bite her. But seeing this clip, I think I made the right choice. While it may be bad in terms of the relationship, and maybe for Astation, the delivery, the passion of the scene of his disgust, his swift forgiveness of you, all of it was a masterclass performance. The difference in lines is so little, yet the change is profound in my opinion.

What do you mean by “right” in this case? Because it’s clearly wrong to ignore his wishes and force him against what he actually wants. Not respecting him and his wishes in this case is clearly wrong. If you realize later and apologize or say it won’t happen again then yeah he forgives you, but that doesn’t make what you did right. I actually quite like the scene that comes from this choice. I don’t see how making the wrong choice is better because this scene is just as good if not better (better to me anyway, and it feels better, too). I think this route is way better

⁠@@feverprolegonna stop you there. it’s a video game. they give you the option to play as people who aren’t like yourself, and to do things you wouldn’t ordinarily do. I would never make Astarion bite her (I’d feel too guilty), but people who make that choice are not “weird” or “unlikeable”, they’re telling a story. If the developers didn’t want people to pick that choice, they wouldn’t have put it in. BG3 is an enormous, phenomenally written game, so don’t come here shaming people who want to explore their options.

I despise astarion so this is the point of the game I usually kill him. I keep him around for that permanent +2 strength bonus then stabby stab 😎 plus he stays at level 1 the entire time so he drops like a fly
