It always felt like just one of those rules that people hear and believe without actually having tried it. I would guess, if anything, it's just down to the smell of the zippo; not that it does anything to the cigar but if you've got a zippo close to your face as you are drawing from you cigar the smell of it might find it's way to you and skew your senses a bit. I personally use my zippo for cigars and, like you, notice no difference. Great video! Always good for people to try stuff rather than just blindly accept what they've heard.

Been using a Zippo on hand-rolled premium cigars for 51 years. Back in the 90's a friend and i blind taste tested Zippo fuel versus butane. Could detect no difference. For years now I've used the Slim version Zippo cause with the glass wick trimmed even with the chimney, the soft flame size is perfect for cigars. I use a precious metal one for a classy experience. You can still pick up a sterling Slim on Ebay or such for less than $100, vintage ones often much less. And of course they have the forever Zippo guarantee. Nuff said.

Thank you so much. I used to light my cigars with a butane torch, because everybody else online said not to use a zippo. But ive never owned a zippo. After this video, I bought one and started lighting different cigars with it. If all the other guys are correct, I should get the same taste out of each different type of cigar, which would be the fuel taste and smell. But so far all the cigars had their own different unique taste. The cheap ones smelled and tasted cheap. The high quality ones smelled and tasted like high quality cigars. Only time I smell the lighter fluid is when I take the zippo out of my pocket, because the fluid is constantly in an evaporating state. I think the people just holding their zippos in their hand and the cigar in the other and they smell the zippo and not the cigar. Thanks for your video.

Yeah bro....I agree with you. I been smoking cigars since the 90s. Was using strictly Zippos back then. Then the butane torch craze took over. I jumped on the bandwagon myself but never really was crazy about refilling butane back then you had to have different size tip and nipples to fit different styles and types of lighters it was a real pain in the ass. So I just use Bic...but recently dug up an old Zippo that I had had brought it back to life. I do get a few look from folks, or comments when I post on social media. Yuck your ruining your cigar. How could you. On and on but I just sit back and enjoy. P.S Plus the fidget factor of the Zippo come on it was the original fidgety toy...lol

I recently purchased a vector lighter that has a flame and torch option in one lighter. Its fuel is butane. I'm very pleased with it because of the option. If your cigar is burning uneven, the single torch is a button push away to getting it back to burning even. Just gently torch the uneven wrapper, and a few draws later, it will correct itself.

From what i've heard on the grapevine, Zippo has really got their stuff together when it comes to the fuel. I remember using a Zippo over a decade ago when i still smoked cigarettes (So of course i can't say anything about lighting cigars back then lol) and i did notice a significant difference in initial taste between a Zippo and a Butane gas lighter. But to reiterate, that was over a decade ago.

Hey man, nice video. I'm a cigar and pipe smoker and I use zippo. I will say though that I used matches on my pipe this winter and immediately noticed the fuel taste when I went back to my zippo pipe lighter. It burns off in 2-4 puffs but I definitely taste it. I do have a pretty sensitive palette though with food, drink, everything so it could be there there are just some folks who have more sensitive taste buds. I love my zippos though and will now do an experiment. Even though I have a zippo butane lighter for my cigars, I'm going to try lighting one with my zippo pipe lighter soon. I'll use a Drew Estates Factory Smokes and see if i taste fluid. If I do, if it goes away in a couple puffs, in my opinion, it's not the end of the world. Nothing wrong with looking for something better but I believe we've all gotten discontent and a bit soft in modern society...

So Update - I had a Drew Estates Factory Smokes Shade connecticut yesterday and lit it with my zippo pipe lighter. I lit it first, then cut the head with a v-cutter. I had no lighter fluid taste or any kind of off taste at all. I also had to do a relite a little past halfway due to a phone call. I had no off flavor there either. Good to know! I do however get the lighter fluid taste in my pipes, but it's survivable.

Nice! I started smoking cigars nearly a couple of years ago and I went straight in with a zippo lighter. I figured it was a bit pretentious the way people were writing them off. I never noticed anything bad. Literally bought a butane insert this week because I always smoke them outside and it can be a pain to get the zippo to light them up properly with even the slightest bit of wind. Didn’t notice any difference at all with the flavour profile.

The only issue I see with a Zippo, or any soft flame, is the lack of accuracy and windproofing, I do prefer the jet flame lighters for bigger cigars (I use a chefs mini blowtorch lol). I lit cigarettes with Zippos for over 15 years and never tasted any fuel. A freshly struck match however can give a nasty taste, let it burn off.

Zippos normally don’t give you much of a hint of gas unless you light it up at the very top. I light stuff with zippos before and there’s basically no difference between them and a regular lighter. Even with a regular bic/clipper, you’ll eventually get a hint of lighter fluid especially when you smoke out of pipes.

For a bit of extra info. Yes, to the utmost Cigar aficionado, Petrol based lights, like a zippo or an IMCO do impart a flavor upon what you are smoking. However there are levels to this. The type of fluid you use matters a GREAT deal. Zippo brand fluid burns the cleanest / has the best taste of the commercially available safe to use fluids designed to be smoked with. Ronsonol is the cheaper but also safe alternative. Ronsonol burns hotter & lasts longer but does produce a more noticeable flavor that to many (but not all) particularly those smoking cigars will find to be more odorous & thus impart more of that chemical taste. There are other brands as well with varying degrees of refinement & purity. But..... The technique in how you light a cigar, pipe, bowl, blunt or cigarette matters a great deal in how the taste is imparted. 1.)Essentially, when using a zippo lighter regardless of fuel type, light the zippo / petrol lighter away from your face. The initial ignition is mostly what you smell & taste. 2.) Wait 3-5 seconds before you begin lighting your cigar, bowl, blunt whatever. In this time the lighter will flame will flare up large then slightly shrink in size. You may even be tempted to wave the flame around or gently blow on it if you want to be extra sure the excess fuel / vapor is gone. 3.) Begin lighting your Cigar by fanning the flame into the unlit end, pulling in with your lungs & turning the cigar with your hands as you do to get a very consistent ignition. Enjoy smoking in style.

See, I have tried Zippos on cigars and I noticed a difference even when I was a cigarette smoker and my palate was iffy cause of it. Maybe I'm just particularly sensitive to it, but I could taste that fuel and I always go for the cleanest I can find. Mostly just in the first handful of puffs, but who knows if it effected it beyond that cause I didn't notice it as much. I just preferred a torch inside or out most of the time. The only time I dig a soft flame is when I smoke anything with a RG under 46 or so and I have a Zippo insert for that (the torch part is kinda trash but the soft flame is decent) and a couple of cheap refillable soft flame lighters I picked up through the years lol While I do love that the cigar community is so big on giving tips and aid to newcomers and even seasoned smokers who may not be getting the most from their cigars, there are a lotta myths floating around, bad advice is everywhere, and subjective things (like this topic here) are spoken like absolute truths all must live by. Another I strongly disagree with is giving new smokers a bunch of mild CT Shade wrapped cigars. Why? Especially of they were or are a cigarette or pipe smoker, they'll already have a nicotine tolerance and be bored very quickly of the limited flavor profile if they can taste it at all. The first few cigars I had were CT Shade and I almost walked away from cigars entirely because of that, I smoked cigarettes at the time and still to this day I'm picky about what CT shade cigars I'll smoke. If I hadn't found Maduros I never would have stuck around to see what all else is out there. While there are some very good, flavorful CT Shade cigars around, most aren't that and are boring cigar boom leftovers for occasional smokers who care more about looks than taste. So what I do is focus on Nicotine strength if they aren't a tobacco user and suggest they grab a few different cigars from different places with different wrappers and fillers to see what they like and I also tell em to expect to not like everything they smoke but that when they find one they do they'll know it. And if they're already pretty experienced tobacco users I don't even worry as much about nicotine and just tell em to try 1 of everything lol I just think it's a bad idea to create these misconceptions about cigars in people's minds. So many people have been smoking for 15 years but mostly smoke mild CT Shade cigars and have no clue what else is out there cause they were worried about a strong cigar like Macanudo Maduro, Ashton Aged Maduro, and a ton of other cigars out there don't have much more flavor without the nicotine kick. Wrapper leaf isn't even where the bulk of the Nicotine is but the common thinking is "Smoke lighter cigars to avoid strong ones".

Didn't they change the fluid formulation many many years ago when they went to odorless? since then it seems to be a lot less of an issue. which was prob 10-20 years ago.

It's annoying this myth is so prevalent but I don't even really care that much. Just means those who mindlessly repeat it without 1st hand experience are missing out on the coolest way to light a cigar. Zippos are goated.

@@cigarinspector2023 Definitely, you have a good technique. Toast before clipping is recommended to minimise any flavours from lighting. I love Zippos so tried using them to light cigars but when I complete light by drawing on cigar I can taste the fuel. BUT, you have me sold, I am going to try again using your technique tonight! Cheers for review, thumbs up.

If you fill your zippo to the brim(where a little comes out the top when filled)and then light a cigar with the gas still fresh in the air/on the wick and stick your cigar right up to it...yeah it’s gonna taste like gas, who knew? If you give it a day or two before use and use it like a normal person you’ll be just fine. Also, I paid 65€ for my zippo. You’re damn right I’m gonna use the damn thing lol

If you notice all the movies Arnold smokes in up until the most recent, he is using a zippo. I agree with the zippo brand fuel being the cleanest widely available brand. I tried ronsonol brand, I think, a yellow plastic bottle that had a very strong kerosene like smell. But it was gone in 1-2 puffs.

I could imagine that people who taste 10% coffee, 20% leather and 32% orange that has been grown on sandy soil and harvested at moonlight, would also taste the difference when you light the cigar with a Zippo. I am not one of them. Also for me the cigar is not only about the taste. It is about the whole experience, as probably for most people. And using a Zippo adds so much to it. Especially when it is freshly filled, makes a huge flame and the cap starts burning as well. The sound of opening a Zippo alone. *Clink!* Even if I could taste a difference, I would still use it.

Since cigar smoking is supposed to be about the experience and the relaxation, it seems to me that dictating how people should be lighting their cigars would ruin that moment for most people. I can only speak for myself, but how others light their cigars is none of my business...

I heard it was different from person to person. I thought the zippo thing was BS too but when I tried it on a few cigars I could taste the fluid a little. Not enough to ruin it but if I thought about it I could make it out. Still use a normal zippo for my pipes. I did put a replacement butane insert in my limited edition anime Zippo but mostly I thought it would be cool to have it in there lol BUT it doesn't ruin the taste of cigar to use a normal zippo.

If a cigar itself is meant to give off potent flavors when being smoked, and yet cigars are able to completely transition out of flavors, how the hell is the modern, much cleaner lighter fluid zippo supplies going to stay in your cigar when it evaporates unbelievably quickly at room temperature? Update: Just used a zippo on a Davidoff Gran Cru, unless I retro hale very slowly and really search for the smell, it's just barely, and I mean barely there. If I smoke the cigar normally including a retro haling, absolutely nothing. I almost smelled very small little flashes of it just normally breathing so I suspect that it actually doesn't stay in the cigar but if anything the chemicals from the zippo may condense just a bit and stick to the moisture inside your nasal passages. But like I said, it's very hard to pick up unless you're seriously looking for the smallest flash of it. I reckon on something with non-creamy mild flavors, it's 100% undetectable. Update 2: I swear to you I literally just soaked that same Davidoff in lighter fluid (half of what was left) and let it dry as best I could for 10 minutes and took the bands off. It was a bit dangerous burning off what was soaked on AND INSIDE, AND ALTHOUGH I SQUIRTED ZIPPO FLUID INSIDE THE CIGAR, I COULD NOT TASTE ANY LIGHTER FLUID AT ALL. You don't have to believe me but for those that have an open mind, I swear to God I'm telling the truth. Zippos are 100% an option. Modern lighter fluid is clean enough now to where it simply will not leave a taste.

Seems like this notion of lighter fluid ruining cigars is nonsense right. I tried a bunch of cigars at different sizes with the zippo and it makes no difference whats so ever. I lit on with a Butane first, took a draw and I used a zippo after that on the same cigar and still no difference.
